    1. [IRL-ULSTER] Gaffigans and Amos
    2. Patrick McGaffigan (around 1822-1828) and Sarah Amos (around 1830-32) In 1867 Sarah (who may have also been known as Mary) left for America with her two children: Thomas and John. John's middle name was named after his mother. They sailed on the Steamship Iowa which left Glasgow, thence to Moville, and finally arrived in New York in July that year. The family then went overland to San Francisco, California, where they settled. The ship's manifest (which I cannot now locate) indicated incorrectly that they were Goffigans. In the 1851 Scotland Census it was indicated that Patrick was a McGaffigan who was 23, and that he was a weaver, living in Springburn which was a small town in Glasgow. It also stated that he and his wife, Sarah Amos, were born in Ireland. By the 1861 census they were living in Kilmarnock, Scotland and he had changed occupations to "carter" or "carder." They had two children by then who were born in 1856 at Coatbridge (Thomas) and 1859 at Paisley (John). Six years later his wife took the children to America, but without Patrick. We cannot locate any marriage registration or the birth of either Patrick or Sarah, or a death certification of Patrick, and wonder if some of the stories told by the relatives were partially true: they were from Co. Tyrone or Ulster and only visited Scotland, and they left from Moville (not Glasgow) for the states. Any light you could shed on this would be appreciated. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. j.j.carroll@earthlink.net

    1. [IRL-ULSTER] McGlinn and variants
    2. Jim McGlinn
    3. Thomas McGlinn, son of Michael McGlinn and Mary Cunningham, was convicted in Cavan, County Cavan on 3rd march 1850. Baron Pennyfather was the presiding judge. The local newspaper, the Anglo Celt Gazette, has no report of the conviction however as an English doctor was on trial that day and the report of that trial filled the court news. Thomas was sentenced to seven years transportation and I have traced his family in Western Australia. Does anyone have any information relating to him or his parents' family in Ireland? I was told that my ancestor James Craney probably came from Ireland, as there were no records of him before the birth of his first child in 1806. He lived in Wigtonshire, Scotland. Does anyone know of Craneys that left Ulster for Scotland at this time? He married Mary McMillan, possibly also from Northern Ireland.

    3. To Laura, re your MARTIN family: I have an ABRAHAM MARTIN born in Antrim, migrated to California in 1920 ..... obviously, a much later family than yours, but I have found that there are not too many Ulster males with this name. This family lived in Broughshane or near there. Some attended the lst Presbyterian Church in Broughshane; others attended Buckna Presbyterian Church, not far distant. Common male names in this MARTIN family: Joseph, Robert, Alexander. Any connection possible? My Father (a MARTIN) took the Family Tree DNA test; and we have a genetic connection to MARTIN's in Ulster, IRE (somehow!!!) The earliest documented proof i have on my MARTIN line is as follows: ABRAHAM MARTIN born Sept. 1797 (said to be SC); died July, 1852 Wayne Co, IL. Married MARY JANE ("POLLY") HEADY (most probably 1823/24; place unknown). 10 children: 1) JEPTHA MARTIN born 1825 2) EMILY MARTIN born 1828 3) PRUDENCE JANE MARTIN born 1829 4) JAMES C. MARTIN born 1840 8) MARY MARTIN (twin) born 1842 9) MANERVA VIRGINIA MARTIN (twin) born 1842 10) MARGARET (or MARTHA?) MARTIN born 1845 I have no other info/clues/ideas on how to connect my ABRAHAM MARTIN with his relstives in Ulster, IRE....................other than that there was a ROBERT MARTIN living "next door" in White Co, IL in 1827 who married a NANCY HEADY. Surnames: McLaughlin, Murray, Kilmurry Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.ulster/2909/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am researching my great grandfather's family. James McLaughlin and Margaret Kilmurry (Kilmeary, Murray) married in Artikelly Londonderry in 1857. They had 2 children there, Mary 1858, Patrick 1860 and then moved to County Down. They had 3 children in Ballymaccarrett, Belfast between 1865 and 1869. According to his US Natrualization papers my GGF Stapen was born in County Down, approx Dec. 1861. There is a gap between 1860 and 1865 so the assumption is that maybe they spent time elsewhere in County Down (and had 1 or 2 more children) before they showed up in Belfast. Anyone have any ideas on how I can pinpoint an area to look in? The 5 children all had Roman Catholic baptismal records and the Roman Catholic marriage of James and Margaret was recorded in Artikelly.
