    1. [IRL-ULSTER] Amos Sisters
    2. We are looking for illusive materials on the AMOS sisters who were born somewhere in Ireland, but emigrated to Scotland and California before 1867. In our search for my great grandfather, John Amos GAFFIGAN, we found that he possibly arrived in the United States with his mother and brother Thomas in July 1867 aboard the SS Iowa from Glasgow. We know that he was born in Paisley, Scotland, about 1859, but his parents, Mary AMOS and Patrick GAFFIGAN, were born somewhere in Ireland. .Patrick was born about 1822 and Mary was born about 1833 The family, without the father who had apparently passed away, stayed in New Haven, Conn. to get bearings from their relatives or sponsors before they made the trip to California. But we have no idea who those people were. And how they transited to the isthmus we dont know. But they boarded the Moses Taylor from Nicaragua to San Francisco, and there they were met by Mary GAFFIGANs sisters. But we have run into an identification problem. It seems as though they were sponsored by either one or both of her sisters, who were resident of San Francisco at that time. The Gaffigans (or Goffigans as listed in the Manifest), and (who may have started out in Scotland as McGaffigan according to the Scotland 1851 census) were met in San Francisco by a Mrs. Charles (Isabella nee AMOS) CAMPBELL, who lived at #6 Thompson Avenue in South Park, San Francisco, and a Miss ANNIE AMOS of #5 Thompson Avenue. There appeared to be on the other side of the South Park or Thompson Avenue the South Park Matt House. Mr. Charles Campbell was evidently employed as a collar maker at the Kimball Company at 4th and Bryant. They lived on that block that had a Miss Kelly and daughter, the Crennan family (John married a Maggie Crennan), the Driscolls and the Goodenoughlys. Now we know that Catherine (nee MURPHY) CRENNAN's (born Queens County, Ireland) daughter, Margaret, had a sister named Rosa CRENAN (or Crennan), and although Catherine (Murphy) had been born in Ireland it appeared that the children were possibly from New York. There was a Rosa CRENAN that was a witness at the wedding of Maggie CRENNAN and John GAFFIGAN, along with the brother, Thomas Gaffigan. The Gaffigans stayed with Annie (or Anna) Amos (who may have been a Mrs. McKee, but we do not know; SF Census, 1880, born about 1832) when they landed about August 1867 and had to move to Alameda in 1868 with Annie because of the earthquake that year. They resided with a Dr. Lambert for the rest of the year and returned to San Francisco in 1869, where they resided with a Mr. James OCONNELL who had a stationary and book store at 310 5th street. We would like to confirm that these Isabella CAMPBELL (CAMPPELL in SF 1880 census, born about 1834)) and Annie AMOS (possibly McKEE) were the sisters of Mary AMOS GAFFIGAN. We are pretty sure of that, but have no idea where in Ireland they originally came from. We would like to see just where they had come from before they were in San Francisco if it is possible. Perhaps other records will give us a clue. I think this is most everything that we might have a handle on. But we do need to follow up the material to see who it was that came from Dunkineely, County Donegal, Ulster, Ireland because apparently Maggie Gaffigan might have visited that area in 1910. Could it have been the Crennans or could it have been the Amos, or even the Gaffigans? Thank you, Jim Carroll j.j.carroll@earthlink.net

    3. Hello: What a kind and generous offer you have made. When and If you have time I have a request for you to look up. Any Information on Robert, or Daniel Glen/Glenn. I can not get in the Ireland door...so to speak!... I have a Robert Glen maybe born about 1747??? He came to America with two brothers I believe (one named Daniel, one unknown) Now-- either at same time or later ??? Robert's son Charles Glenn (1) came and setteled with his father in Genoa, Tompkins Co, NY. Charles was born in Ireland about 1770 (think he was about 8 or 10 when he came here). Supposidly born in in Genlocken, Tyrone, Ireland. He married Margaret Harcheexcfrom Bucks Co. PA. in 1790. Margaret & Charles moved to Junius, Seneca Co., NY. In 1810 they moved to Tyre, NY. where he and his wife died. They had 10 children...my direct line runs from their son Robert L. Glenn. their lst son who was born in PA. all other children were born in NY... the names I have are: Jane (Jinny), John, Charles Jr...possibly a Hamblin and last a Margaret. Charles Jr., Robert, Jane and John moved to the area of Livingston County, Michigan...where I live now. I really have no idea about the wife of Robert Sr. from Ireland, his parents or any other children there might have been. As I said...I am at the Ireland door and blocked :o} Know they were Prodesents, couple of them were Reverands of North Lake Church, in North Lake, MI. Land for church was part of Janes, and John Glenn's land, which they donated. Note: I think that Robert Sr., other brother that came with him besides Daniel might have been named James or John... but not positive... Thank you in advance for reading my note and possibly even finding a link for me to travel... Many Blessings to you and yours. Betty L. 1. Re: [IRL-ULSTER] Ancestry Ireland membership
    2. Some time back, ten years ago, I had the Ulster Historical Foundation do a search - and I also maintained a membership. It went away with the retirement of Brian Trainor, and some mix-ups that I would rather not go into. I see that their data base material is for members only, and wonder just what it contains. I am attaching a short version of part of my family history, especially dealing with what they did the research on. In your spare time, and I really mean that, could you do some quick searches to see if the data that they collected was then transcribed into their data bases. In particular, the marriage of my great grandfather would be a good one to do as his given name was different that the actual name he was baptised with: Owen and Eugene. This is not to embarrass anyone, but rather to see just what they have and how they have maintained it. My great grandfather, Owen (or Eugene) McCARROLL (c. 1840 1895), came from the townland of Corkill, (or Corkhill as many of the recorded records improperly indicate) in the parish of Clogher, County Tyrone. Of the Roman Catholic faith, he was baptised and buried in Eskragh R.C. graveyard. He was married in Fintonas R.C. church which is in the civil parish of Donacavey. Owen went by that name and not Eugene - probably because that was his fathers name. Owen was the son of Eugene McCARROLL and Catherine (unknown), who were farmers, and was born about 1840 in Donacavey. When he married my great grandmother he was registered as EUGENE, but he signed the register as OWEN and that is the reason the record may not be located initially. Catherine McCUSKER (may be McCOSKER or McKUSKER) was my great grandmother and she came from the townland of Augharonan, also in Donacavey. They were wed on 25 June 1867 in my great grandmothers church in Donacavey. Catherine's father was Patrick McCUSKER and her mother's surname name was not found in the records, but it appears she was Catherine also. She was born circa 1846 1851; and, she married Owen at "full age." But, as is the case with most old Irish records, there is a discrepancy for the 1911 census lists herself as a 60 yr old widow while the 1901 census listed Catherine as a 45 year old widow. That may be the result of the old age pensions that went into place in 1908. She had a possible sibling: John McCUSKER of Legmaghery, but little is known of him except he was a single farmer. My grandfather Michael Joseph McCARROLL (or CARROLL) was born in the area of Omagh and Fintona, County Tyrone. Mickey, as he was known, had migrated to California, U.S.A. in 1887, aboard the Etruria, to join his brothers in San Francisco: Thomas and Patrick, who had become USA citizens. In 1904 he also gained US citizenship. After sometime in the Bay Area he then returned to Fintona to get married. There is some speculation that he was ill in California and returned to Ireland because of that reason; but he had recovered. Agnes Bridget GAFFIGAN was born in San Francisco in 15 Sept. 1888 to John Amos GAFFIGAN (b. 1859, Paisley, Scotland of Irish parents, Mary AMOS and Patrick GAFFIGAN) and Margaret "Maggie" CRENNAN (b. California of Irish parents). She left for Ireland when she reached majority. We do not know if she accompanied Mickey on that journey, where she left from, where in Ireland they landed, or where they stayed before they left for County Tyrone. Instead of being married in the Fintona area, they were wed on 25 June 1912, at St. Patricks Cathedral in Dundalk, County Louth. They resided in Omagh, at least until 1914, when Mickey became a publican/auctioneer/seller of shoes and coffins on Main Street in Fintona (the pub owned by the late Mr. Francis McAtee). He had that pub until 1924 when he passed away in Omagh, County Tyrone. Michael and Agnes had a number of children, including my father: Michael Joseph McCARROLL (CARROLL), b. 25 March 1914 in Omagh; Patrick Eugene, b. 1915 who passed away after three days; Mary Catherine (who became Maura when she emigrated to the USA), 1917 and passed away in 2004; Thomas Leo, b. 1918; Bernadette Anthony, b. 1919; and, Kevin Barry, b. 1921.
