Hello Ann Thank you for your message. My research on DICKINS has so far resulted in finds only in Bedfordshire ie Dean and Keysoe which are villages within a few miles of each other. My 4x Gt Grandfather was Samuel Dickens. There are more DICKINS families in Risely which is again close to Keysoe and Dean. I have not found any connections to Derbyshire yet. If I happen upon a connection, I will let you know. Best Wishes Richard. ----- Original Message ----- From: Ann Atherton <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, August 05, 2001 11:23 PM Subject: Re: [ULSTER] BRANDON > Richard, > Do you have any info on your gr grandfather. Hello List I have been trying to locate my Gt Grandmother Matilda BRANDON I have her marriage and death but would like to know her birth details and hence her parents. I have her approximate date of birth as 1878. This I obtained from her death entry in the Dean Parish Register Bedfordshire she was 39years at death in November 1918.I have checked the GRO index between 1875 and 1883 and the national 1881 census. But could not find a matching entry. She married Fredrick William Dickins c1901 they had six children Florence 1902 Thomas Henry 1904 Arthur William 1906 Ellen Maud 1909 Elsie May 1913 Mary Elizabeth 1916 It is the apparent lack of information on her birth in England that has lead me to consider that she may have been born in Ireland. There are many BRANDON's in Ireland. I am therefore hoping that some one will have information on the BRANDON family who may have left Ireland in the late 19th century and went to Bedfordshire England. Any information would be very welcome Regards Richard.

Seeking information on my great grandfather Michael Maguire / McGuire County Fermanagh. I don't know what Town or Parish that he lived in all that I do know is that he had a son John Maguire/ McGuire born : 1828 in County Fermanagh Ireland who is my grandfather and that John Maguire/McGuire emigrated to upper Canada in 1845 which is now the province of Ontario to a place called Mitchell. John Maguire/McGuire married Rose Anne O'Keefe on May 24, 1857 at St. Joseph's parish Stratford Ontario. John and Rose Maguire/ McGuire had four children born at Mitchell Ontario. Michael Henry McGuire Born : April 17. 1858, Francis John McGuire born : 1860 Charles Thomas McGuire born :1862 , Mary Ann McGuire born : 1864. On April 17 . Rose Anne McGuire died from child birth complications. In 1865 John McGuire and his young family emigrated to Grand Rapids Michigan USA. John McGuire married for a second time on May 01, 1866 to My grandmother Bridget McDonald born 1840 in Ireland. From this marriage came four sons James McGuire 1867 Daniel McGuire 1868 Edward McGuire 1971 Joseph Henry McGuire 1874 all were born at Grand Rapids Michigan. In 1889 the John McGuire family moved west to homestead at Manvel North Dakota. In 1905 John McGuire and his family emigrated back to Canada where his sons filed on homesteads at Paynton Saskatchewan. The McGuire family lived out the remainder of their lives at Paynton Saskatchewan Canada. I would be most grateful to hear from anyone knowing anything about this McGuire family or anyone who has done Maguire/McGuire genealogy and could shed some light on my search. I will gladly share what information that I have. Sincerely Charles McGuire
If any of the twelve children had unusual names or you know the dates or years of birth, you could review the Irish Civil Registration at your local LDS site and I believe you can order the birth certificate from there as well for a very reasonable price. Hello McComb Researchers (all variations) These may help some of you McComb "researchers" out there. Its real easy to order these microfilms. I have found them all very helpful, you will see almost all the variations of the name being used. You will also see the many other Scottish surnames that are married into and around these lines. Very interesting. Some of you already know of these sources, some do not. Anyway, I have found them very helpful !! It seems most would be Scotch~Irish, some Quakers also.. . Good evening fellow genealogists!! Its great to be back home after a month of travel in Switzerland (daughter lives in Baden) and other interesting places. When I left on June 19th I thought I had sent out ALL the orders for Hagy's thesis, Castle's Woods-Frontier Virginia Settlement 1766-1799. If I failed to respond to an e-mail or misplaced an order please contact me so I can resolve any outstanding situations. I hope those of you who received a copy enjoyed it and any feedback would be appreciated. This document is important for many of us with southwest Virgina ancestry and I am happy to provide it to interested researchers. Probably the best book for Augusta County/Rockbridge County research is Tinkling Spring, Headwaters of Freedom by Howard McKnight Wilson first published in 1954 with a single reprint in the mid 1970's. I would love to be able to provide this resource to you but unfortunately it is copywrited. Here is the good news!! Yesterday I received an e-mail from Pastor Fred at the church and he told me that the Session met to discuss my request for permission to reproduce the book for fellow genealogists (that request was denied) BUT they have decided to reprint the book. I will keep everyone advised on this project and highly recommend the purchase of this book as soon as it becomes available. There is an early landowners map in the back of the book which shows where everyone on the Beverly patent lived and it is amazing how many of those families ended up next to each other in southwest Virginia and east Tennessee. I think you can get a copy of the map through the Rockbridge county Historical Society for under $10.00. As you can see, we are working our way back in time from Castle's Woods to Augusta/Rockbridge County (1740's-1750's) and it is my desire to provide a link to Ulster which might provide the necessary clues to make the family connections between the Ulster/Virginia families that many of us originate from. The best resource I have found is a pair of obscure books written in the early 1900's by the Reverend Alexander Lecky titled, "In the Early Days of the Laggan Presbytery" and its companion book, "The Laggan and Its Presbyterianism." Lecky has compiled much quality information on the Presbyterian families that lived in the fertile, low-lying area around Derry/Donegal that was referred to as the Laggan in early times. This data is organized by Parish and includes hundreds and hundreds of family names that are a mirror of the names found in Augusta/Rockbridge County just a generation later. Since the names are by Parish and townlands it makes sense to study the allied families so for example if you see the following: Taboyn now Monreagh Matthew Lindsay, John Aikine, Alexander Houston, Robert Cowan, Archibald Alexander, Robert Scott, Wm, Mackie, Wm. Bell, John Kilgour, James Moore, John Graham, John Gay, Richard Armstrong, and others Parish of Raphoe Robert Anderson, Patrick Bell, Alexander Stuart, William Ramsay, Robert Walker, Robert Gray, John McClure, and others This information is extensive and gives us an interesting picture of the arrangement of families kind of like the early land owners map of Augusta/Rockbridge county. These books are a must if you are searching for a connection between Ulster and early Virgina. They are not copywrited and I can make copies for interested researchers. There are 211 pages of serious material. Contact me privately if you want me to make you a copy. Regards, Robert Cowan
