I'm sad to say, but I haven't done much research on the name yet. I've had great success in tracing my own maiden name in Italy and have been in touch with distant cousins there during the last year. My grandfather was able to visit them in June and see the town where his parents grew up. In any case, that research has occupied my time. One of my New Year's resolutions is to get out letters of inquiry to the Gunnings in the Phila. area and see which are related and if they have any info on the family history. Fortunately, because Phila. is such an old city and has lots of historical archives, etc. I should be able to locate our line. But it's also a huge city, as I mentioned, and I'm not really sure where to begin digging. If I come across anything, I'll be sure to email you. Best of luck and good wishes for the New Year. Jennifer

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/DYC.2ACE/313.1.1.1 Message Board Post: I met someone from The Netherlands with an aunt whose name was Gunning (very different pronunciation from our English one!). I also had a letter from someone completely unrelated in The Netherlands who was trying to trace the Gunning family line. >From this I was led to believe that the family originated in the European Low Countries, and came to England with William of Orange in the 17th century, where they were awarded lands in Ireland. William of Orange had a policy to subdue Catholicism in Ireland by confiscating land belonging to Catholics, and awarding it to faithful Protestants, and this could be part of that story. In Regency times in England, a family of Gunnings came to the Prince's court from Ireland, Charles Gunning, and his two sisters, Anne and Elizabeth. The two ladies took the court by storm with their great beauty, and Elizabeth married the Duke of Argyle. I have been unable to trace any connection with any of these famous Gunnings, unfortunately! However, it is very interesting to know that it is such a common name in PA, since it is quite uncommon in Great Britain as far as I know. Did the family(ies) emigrate from GB, or from other European locations, do you know? I wrote to you because we share the name. I was christened Jennifer Ann Gunning (married and divorced twice, and reverted to my maiden name). I am very pleased to meet you, and wish you the best of luck with your search!

I'm actually Jennifer Ray Durandetta-Gunning, a Gunning by marriage. My husband's family lives (and has always lived as far as we know) in the Philadelphia area of PA. I haven't had much luck tracing the name, although grandmother Gunning believes it originated in the UK. Grandfather Gunning died in the 60s so no help from him and was an only child. Also, it's a common name in our area, and tracing it has been very difficult. Not to mention that trying to find a single line in the population of Phila. is also a major chore! I'm the genealogy buff in the family and not many others are as interested as I in tracing the line. I'd be glad to know what family history you have of the Gunnings (origin, etc.) and if you'd still like to see what names/dates I have, I can email you my file. Thanks for writing! Jennifer

New Year greetings to the list. Looking for information on a Thomas CHRISTIE who died in Bracknell, Berkshire, England, on June 4, 1988 (nineteen hundred eighty-eight). Would SKS have access to information that would show where he was buried in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Many thanks in advance. I would like to know if anyone on this list has attended past family history conferences of the Ulster Historical Foundation. If so, have you been able to accomplish research during the conference? I have never travelled to Europe so I'm trying to decide whether to go to this next Sept. Thanks for any comments. Susan San Gabriel CA

He left Ireland in 1844 for Upper Canada and was living near Newtownards at the time. James married Mary Thomson and they were Presbyterian. I have gravestone inscriptions for a later John Newell in Listooder but not complete records on 1796 Flax List or Tithe Applotment.

Write Passenger Arrival Records (NNCC), National Archives (GSA), Washigton, DC.20408. Let me know what you find out. My relatives William and Ann came from Co. Tyrone, N. Ireland and came to Phiadelphia, Penn. USA in 1843. They left from Londonderry. They had four sons, Charles, James, Arthur and William. If you would like the dates on them let me know. It is possible that they came from the town or village of Cappagh. Atleast that is what it says on Charles' obituary.
