    2. By citizenship papers, do you mean Naturalization Papers. If you do, I would hazard a guess that is the correct info. One needs Birth Cert. to become a Citizen. If you decide it was Antrim, there are lots of access to Birth records that can be had. Let me know. Good luck Kathleen ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, May 20, 2002 4:17 AM Subject: [ULSTER] KNIGHT born in SCOTLAND/IRELAND? > Hello List, > I hope someone will have a thought about a dilemma regarding my ancestor > JAMES KNIGHT. 1. [ULSTER] KNIGHT born in SCOTLAND/IRELAND?
    2. Hello List, I hope someone will have a thought about a dilemma regarding my ancestor JAMES KNIGHT. On his Citizenship papers in 1878, he states ANTRIM as his place of birth - which would make him Irish. Yet I have also found on various documents, including the 1880 Census in Massachusetts where he states SCOTLAND as his place of birth, but he lists IRELAND as the birth place of both his parents... Has anyone run into this before? Why would he list Scotland as his place of birth? Would his parents have been visiting Scotland? But then his also lists Antrim? I have yet to find any trace of him or his parents [don't know if he had any siblings] in Ireland. James came to NY in 1851, settled in Massachusetts, fought in the Civil War -[those records show nothing except "Ireland"]. Thanks for any thoughts, Paula

    2. Avril - I am researching the descendants of Robert Kells of County Cavan. Any chance of a connection between Kellett and Kells. Names were changed quite often in the 1700s and 1800s. My g-g-g grandfather Andrew Kells came to the United States in the early 1800s, probably before 1805. Theda Kells Hoyt

    2. John D. Armstrong
    3. I hope I'm not out of line, jumping in here, However, my Great Grandmother was Catherine Miller, daughter of William or Hugh Miller and Jennie O'Neil Catherine was born in Ballymena, Antrim Ulster in June of about 1836... Some records indicate she was born in 1835, others 1836 to 1838, Her Obituary in 1914 stated she was 77 yrs and some od months old at the time of her death in Greenwood, Nebraska Jennie left Co Antrim in 1854 or 1855, going to Connecticut in the US where she lived with an older Brother Bernard Miller, In Nov of 1855 She traveled west to Chicago, Illinois to join up with another older brother by the name of James Miller... By chance, they happened into, my Great Grandfather, John Armstrong, who was also born and raised in the Ballymena area of Co. Antrim., They all recognized each others manner of speach, struck up a conversation, which in 6 weeks led to the marriage of John Armstrong and Catherine Miller. A marriage which lasted 55 yrs, until the passing of John also in Greenwood, Nebraska My interest would be in any connection to the O'neils, the Millers or the Armstrong's of Ballymena, in Co Antrim, or anywhere in the prov of Ulster. John was the son of a Hugh Armstrong, a tenant farmer... John was born Dec 1820 on his fathers farm, somewhere around Ballymena. John had an older half brother, some 20 yrs older, by the name of Thomas. Thomas preceded John to the US, they both worked in the carpet weaving trade in Philadelphia for a couple years.. I remember meeting a Bob MeGeeghan who my husband referred to as his distant cousin. They lived in Midland, PA, USA. My husband's family was also from that county, Beaver Co, in PA. They came from the Braddock area of Pittsburgh tho in PA. My husband is Donald R. Powers Jr., his father Donald R. Powers Sr., his mother is Elizabeth Link Retzer Powers,: his grandfather was William Powers, and grandmother Mary O'Rielly, or Riley,(not sure there). He had 2 uncles William, Thomas, and 1 aunt Kathryn, who were siblings of Don Sr. We can find no trace back of these know facts at this time. We do know his grandparents mentioned above were alcoholics and his Father and his uncles and aunt were placed in foster homes. Don Sr. was the youngest and his aunt, who was a MCGeeghan took him and raised him, mostly. We have been stumped from there back. Hopefully this could tie into some of your information! . I've been to Ireland, and am doing several lines of searching for my and my husband's families. Regards Ruth, contact me at [email protected]

    3. Following is info I posted earlier today on the County Cavan list, but thought I should re-post to the Ulster list since it is more inclusive and my people are from across Ulster rather than one single county. Apologies for cross-posting. While one name might not connect, perhaps the combination of two or more will root out some responses. Thanks in advance. McMANUS, Catharine, dau of Thomas and Catharine of Cootehill, b. abt 1830. Emigrated to Johnstown Pennsylvania area abt 1890 and died 1904 in Johnstown Pennsylvania USA. SHIELS/SHIELDS, John, son of Edward SHIELS and Mary/Bridie/Biddy KANE/KEAN of Lower Cumber, Co. Derry (I understand the "London" is silent), b. abt 1833; m. No dates info on John McGreechan. Mary's other children named McGREECHAN included Jane b. abt 1866, Mary and Archibald (twins) b. 1871 (Archie died as toddler; Mary lived to adult).
