    2. I am guessing that Bill is a Presbyterian and still in Ireland. Has he not heard that they just found out that The Scot's were part of the Irish family at one time? He is really in a bad way. My Family came to America in 1793 and fought at Boyne, to my shame were Orange men I feel their sins upon me and I had nothing to do with it all. Please let me ask forgiveness for my Mc Fadden's in the Part they had in doing any harm to anyone. I have no ax to grind, no complaints to give, I just wish that the garbage that he has would stop here in America also. Give it different names and places and the hate still goes on. One of the worst in the USA was and is the KKK, they sound just like Bill. Just other groups. What was that "he will visit the sins of the fathers upon the 10th generation before forgiveness comes? Good grief please put an end to this mess over there. I know there is false pride there. Be what you may. Is there any Christians that really do forgive each other and turn the other cheek. 3. It's not always easy to remember we are into genealogy. We can acknowledge that in the past there was politics, but current politics has no place on a genealogy and history list. Many of us have grandfathers from Scotland, Wales, England and Ireland.........I am just one of those. I shudder to think what their politics were, but I love them all the same. Bill's tirade came through the Ulster query board and was immediately deleted, but it went to the list at the speed of light. I find no redeeming value to his message and he has not responded to a personal message. That is why discussion of that unfortunate matter is banned on this list. 1. [ULSTER] Surname Steele
    2. The only way to begin Ulster research is at the beginning. You start with yourself and work backwards. You get every record for you parents, Grandparents, G-Grandparents, etc. and hope that some record will give you a townland. If you had an unusual surname, you could settle for a county. But Steele is not that unusual. The minimum you need is County. Records that showed my G-Grandparent's place of birth in Ireland include: SSDI for two of the children, the delayed birth record for my Grandfather and my G-Grandfather's obit which ended with the sentence "Newtownards and Belfast papers please copy", and both my G-Grandparent's death certs. If your direct line doesn't record this data, research a collateral line. A brother or sister may have recorded in any number of records the birthplace of her parents. Sandra

    1. [ULSTER] Laggan, Londonderry and Castle's Woods, Virginia
    2. Our Northern Ireland adventure is over, the answers found and it is time to move on; to Stirling in Scotland with the prospect of new "finds"and more adventures. For almost six years I have researched the Presbyterian Ulsterman and in doing so found four obscure out of print publications that should be included in every library. Before my focus changes to Scottish research I am offering to interested researchers ONE last time the opportunity to purchase (cost of copies and postage) the following items. All items have either expired copyrite provisions or in the case of the Hagy thesis I have the authors permission to reproduce the document. They are: The Laggan and its Presbyterianism and In the Days of the Laggan Presbytery, 1905, 1908, by the Rev. Alexander Lecky, B.A. member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Belfast, Davidson & McCormack, 54 King St. 211 pages. On our trip we met JB Shannon age 90, who assisted in the 1975 reprinting and he was a window to the past. He is the last living person who had anything to do with these books and says they are still the BEST source for Ulster presbyterian research. From Lecky I quote, "The lists of names of former generations of Lagganeers, and their places of abode, that are given in the Appendixes, and which NEVER before appeared in print, whilst they may of necessity prove dull reading to those who have no acquaintance with the locality, will not, I hope, be altogether uninteresting to those who bear the same name, or live in the same places...." If I send this post to your list it means your surname is listed in the appendix. Cost: $25.00 Fighters of Derry, Their Deeds and Descendants, being a Chronicle of Events in Ireland during the Revolutionary period 1688-1691, by William R. Young, 1932, Eyre and Spottiswoode, London 350 pages. Contains the following biographical sketches: (1500) 1. The leaders of the County Associations, who with their levies took part in the Preliminary operations and contributed much of the man power for the Defence. 2. The Apprentice Boys and those responsible for shutting the gates on the 8th Dec. 1688. 3. The actual Defenders during the 105 day siege (over 1200 genealogical sketches) 4. Those engaged in the relief of the city. One of the most difficult sources to locate, in fact almost impossible. Months worth of reading and packed with great genealogy. Cost: $25.00 A History of the Siege of Londonderry and Defense of Enniskillen in 1688 and 1689, with Historical Poetry and Biographical Notes, by the Rev. John Graham, M.A. Rector of Magilligan in the Dicese of Derry. Includes the Battles of the Boyne, Athlone, and Aughrim and the siege and Capitulation of Limmerick by Lord Macaulay, Toronto, 1869 The historical poems are family genealogies about those who were at Derry and where they came from. Along with "Fighters of Derry" these two sources contain more actual genealogical information than any others that I have seen. 311 pages Cost: $25.00 Castle's Woods: Frontier Virginia Settlement, 1769-1799, A thesis presented to the Faculty of the Department of History, East Tennessee St. University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts, by James W. Hagy, 1966, 150 pages. The most popular of the documents offered it covers the families who settled in Russell county, Virginia when it was considered the frontier. If your ancestors came through southwest Virginia this document is the history of your family. Contains information of specific families as well as the farmers, speculators, artisans, and preachers who resided there. Lots on the Indian battles that were a daily feature of life on the frontier. Names like Russell, Walker, Porter, Cowan, Houston, Boone, Montgomery, Fraley, Thompson, Anderson, Kilgore and 50 or so other "Scotch-irish" families make this an invaluable resourch for your family history. Cost: $25.00 I only post these offerings to a tiny fraction of the lists and only to those lists where your surnames are mentioned. After I make the offering I insubscribe because my e-mail box will fill up in about ten minutes. I am always on the Cowan and Wigton-Walker lists and you can e-mail me at [email protected] and ask any question you like. I will always attempt to answer your questions although it is unlikey I hold the key to who your great grandma was. If you are interested in the results of our trip to Donegal and Belfast please check the COWAN-L archives and you will see the posts we made during the last week or so. Thanks for your interest and I hope making this information available has helped some of you. I always enjoy getting e-mails from fellow researches. Also a big thanks to those of you who sent family information to us before our trip. It was appreciated and a special thanks to Alex Latta from Canada who turned us on to James Fleming. The trip would not have been the same without that piece of the puzzle. Regards, Robert Cowan 525 Harrogate Rd. Matthews, North Carolina 28105 (704)847-4081

    3. I am researching the surname CLATHWORTHY from the Londonderry areas of Bellaghy, Castledawson, Magherafelt, Mullaghboy. JAMES BROWN born 1871 in Bellaghy, son of JOHN BROWNE and MARGARET JANE nee BLAIR named his youngest daughter ANNETTE CLATHWORTHY BROWN. ALSO SEAWRIGHT JOHNSTON and HENRY McERLEN were executors of the last will of Robert Blair who farmed at Mullaghboy and died c 1906-8. Robert left his property to his wife JULIA and sons GIDEON, ROBERT and JAMES. It interests me in my research for the possible connection between these families. TIA Val New Zealand

    1. [ULSTER] The Irish Chronicles changed to The Irish Everywhere Newsletter
    2. Just wanted to let everyone know that the new Irish newsletter name has been changed from The Irish Chronicles to: The Irish Eveywhere Newsletter You can still subscribe to this new FREE newsletter on the County Cavan or County Longford webpages. The subscriber information will soon be located on a new page. At that time the Cavan and Longford pages will redirect you to that new url for the newsletter as soon as the initial webpage is completed for The Irish Everywhere. I'm very excitedly looking forward to sending out the first issue on July 1, with a possible teaser mini-newsletter coming out about June 15th. There are some Irish Festivals that I want everyone to know about in case you'll want to attend them, and they will be included in the June 15th mini-issue. I'm planning additional items to be located on The Irish Everywhere webpage, along with the newsletters eventually being placed online for your viewing pleasure. The online versions will not be placed on the page until the following month's newsletter is mailed. So, once we get in full momentum, say, the July 1 newsletter should be setup on the webpage by approximately August 1, when the August issue should be going out. I welcome suggestions for the newsletter or for the webpage. I know that many of you out there are much more accomplished at this type of thing than I, and I'm learning much along the way. To those who have already subscribed, thank you. It is not necessary to resubscribe to the new title. You are on the subscriber list if you have previously subscribed. If you haven't subscribed to the newsletter yet, you can find the subscriber information located at: http://www.irelandgenweb.com/~cavan/cavan.html or http://www.irelandgenweb.com/~longford/longford.html Thank you, and remember, if you are an author, or fancy yourself one, please feel free to submit an article for consideration in upcoming issues.
