    2. Bob Meehan
    3. A wonderful idea. Father - John Joseph Mehigan Jr. born 1902, (family name later changed to Meehan around 1910 US census), died 1995.. Also known as Garrett John Joseph Meehan (name added at confirmation?) and Tom, as he closely resembled silent movie star Thomas Meighan. Grandfather - John Joseph Mehigan, born 1865 in Ballygrillihan townland, Castletownroche, County Cork, married Elizabeth Bushe, born 1865, (also from Castletownroche) in Cambridge Massachusetts, 1896. G-Grandfather - Garret Mehigan, born 1844, died December, 1905, Ballygrillihan, Castletownroche, married Johanna Duane, born 1849, died 1908.. G-G-Grandfather - Daniel Mehigan, Ballygrillihan, Castletownroche, born just prior to church records in the area , probably about 1807, married Judith (or Julia) Murphy, born 1817, died 1896 G-G-G-Grandfather - probably Robert Mehigan, Ballygrillihan, Castletownroche, married Julia Keefe (data from baptisms of later children) For many years the Mehigans were poor tenant farmers in Ballygrillihan. They wwere not listed in the Tithe Applotments or Griffith;s Valuation. G-G-G-G-Grandfather, born 1763, probably John Joseph Mehigan (born Jean Joseph in France). came to Meehan family farm in Kilcoran, TIPPERARY around 1766 with his mother after his father's death in France. G-G-G-G-G-Grandfather - Guillaume Alexandre de Mehegan, born in France about 1722, married Charlotte Therese Boitel. He was a writer and political activist who sepnt some time in the Bastille (fortunately he didn't lose his head or I might not be here!). He was a scholar noted for his flowerly language ( a trait I see in some of my own children!). G-G-G-G-G-G-Grandfather - Jacques (formerly James) Mehigan, came to France after the Battle of the Boyne and fought in a French army. Married G-G-G-G-G-G-G-Grandfather - Christopher The O'Meighan, youngest son of Nicholas, the last person to hold the title of "The O'Meighan}, was born about 1637, from Ballaghmeehan, County Leitrim. He was an officer in the army of James II and was killed in the Battle of the Boyne. Oldest sons James and Charles went to France. while wife Margarita O'Reilly and three youngest sons went to a farm called Kilcoran in County TIPPERARY. Kilcoran is only about 20 miles from Castletownroche, just over the Galtee mountains. I have learned of many connections between Castletownroche and Kilcoran, including the English writer Edmund Burke who wrote on the hanginga of Fr. Nicholas Sheehy and Ned Meehan, one of Christopher's grandsons, for supposed treason by cohorting with the French (perhaps letters to/from Charlotte?). In addition to the short distance and other connections between Kilcoran and Castletownroche although definite records are not available additional clues are the name of my G-G-G-Grandfather, Robert, which at the time was not a common Irish name but was a common French name and the clincher, when I went to Ireland and met relatives in Castletownroche I discovered the name there is actually pronounced Me-HEE-gen, which is the FRENCH pronunciation. G-G-G-G-G-G-G-Grandfather - Nicholas The O'Meighan, head of O'Rourke's army in the 1640's, In 1643 along with the army of O'Neill which also probably included the famous Milss "The Slasher: O'Reilly, captured the castle at Manorhamilton, County Leitrim, and deposed the notorious Sir Frederic Hamilton, who had a nasty habit of hanging a "Papist" from a tree each morning before breakfast. I'm glad I did this. I had forgotten how much information I had been fortunate enough to collect, with the help of and thanks to the Tipperary and many other internet lists. Bob Meehan
