    3. Hello Karen, I have done all of those things and Denis's birth place in Ireland still remains elusive. To be honest, at the time of Denis's death, in relationship to where the still new colony of New South Wales was developing, record keeping was not the best, and a lot was deliberately destroyed some decades later, so we are lucky to have what we have. This is from the "Convict Indent for the ship "Parmelia" (2) which translates as 2nd voyage to Australia. Arrived with 218 Irish male convicts 1st March, 1834. Mr. A. O'Donoghue Surgeon Superintendent. Muster on Board 5th March, 1834, mustered 215, sick on shore 3, lost at sea 2, not embarked 2, total as per Muster Roll 222. 667 130 Hogan, Denis. Aged 23 - Read and Write - Catholic - Single - Tipperary - Farm Servant - Manslaughter - Sentenced Tipperary 13 March, 1833 - 7 years - No former convictions - Height 5 ft. 2 1/2 inches - Complexion dark and freckled - Hair dark brown - Eyes hazel - Eyebrows meeting - Scar top of forehead - Two scars over right eyebrow - nail of fourth finger left hand split. Ticket of Leave 38/1051 29th June, 1838 Allowed to remain in District of Windsor Certificate of Freedom 40/707 18th April, 1840 From the State Library of New South Wales I found the following in the book "The Convict Ships" by Charles Bateson, information on the ship and other details. Arrived 1834 2 March "Parmelia" (2) Barque 443 tons built Quebec 1825 Class AE1 Master, James Gilbert, Surgeon, Anthony Donoghue Sailed 29 Oct., 1833 From Cork direct to Sydney took 124 days. 1837 Convict Muster - No. 12659 Hogan, Denis - Aged 25 Arrived "Parmelia" 1834 Assigned to Edward Redmond of Sydney, and it appears that Edward Redmond had only the one convict at that time. Denis married Margaret Carey an immigrant from Ireland, and they had four children - James b. 1835 Windsor (NSW) died 1892; John b. 1842 Sydney (my ancestor) died 1895 Forest Reefs on the Central Tablelands; Mary b. 1845 - no further knowledge, but there is a rumour that someone became a Nun, and I wonder if it was Mary, but I may be wrong, it could have been from the next generation of Hogans; Timothy b. 1848 possibly died 1856. Denis died in 1850 and Margaret died 1852. I have been going back through my papers, and I remembered that a John Hogan also came out on the same voyage of the "Parmelia". I have no indication that they were brothers or even related. This is the info. on his Certificate of Freedom No. 43/102 dated 15 January, 1843. Name John Hogan, - Ship "Parmelia" 2 (means 2nd voyage) Master - Gilbert Year - 1834 Native Place - County Tipperary Trade or Calling - Labourer Offence - Perjury Place of Trial - Tipperary Date of Trial - 15 March 1833 Sentence - 7 years Year of birth - 1814 Height 5 ft.51/4 inches Complexion - Brown Hair - Brown Eyes - Blue General Remarks - Nose cocked - Dimpled chin - Scar outer corner of left eyebrow - Scar back of thumb - Another .........same - Scar below cap of left knee. In a letter I have from Reg. of BMDs in Sydney dated 1978, giving the birth of John Hogan *27 Sept, 1843*, Sydney to John Hogan and his wife Catherine. I haven't followed this up, and I don't know where this John Hogan fits in, but my father Wilfred John Hogan was also born on 27 Sept, but in 1902 - son of James Hogan and Adeline Newstead (daughter of English immigrants from Norfolk). I have found it quite interesting to see how many folk in families have the same birth dates by day and month, as others in their extended families - it is more common than I would have thought.
