Well, all the tithes do is list the tenants of properties (heads of households) and what size property they were renting and possibly what they were growing. All this info was used to assign a tax. Same with the Griffith's Valuation, however, the tithes are a bit cruder and a generation earlier. They are good to see if your family was living in the same area a generation before the GV. This will give you names of possibly fathers, uncles, etc. Like with my family, I have a Timothy O'Connor in the GV and from his death cert I know his father was Bryan O'Connor and his mother is a Gallagher. I also know his brother's tombstone in Troy NY said he was from Emly RC Parish. So, I started by drawing a circle around Emly RC parish and searching the tithes looking for my Bryan. I found him not far from Emly, but in Co Limerick, probably living close to where his wife was from because there are a number of Gallaghers in the area. I know Ancestry transcriptions contain plenty of errors. But other than > verifying what I've found on Ancestry, is it worth the trouble to look at > the film? The tithes, like the GV cannot really give you any 'proof' but can help you figure out where your ancestors lived so you can then search those church records. Those will give you the 'proof'. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
