    3. Hi Les, And in the 1700's and 1800's, the illegitimate children were given the surname of the mother. I can't tell how far back that goes. One may just think one is a Ryan or a Dwyer.     3. I was reading the article from Trinity research & they say that Medieval Irish were christian but they still used the customs of the pre-christian times.
