Just a quick reminder about the O'Dwyer clan rally Sept 15-17th, 2006. It will be held at the new (and quite luxurious) Ramada Inn, 2 miles NW of Tipperary Town. They have reserved a block of 20 rooms and they are starting to be taken up. If you call the Ramada directly, please be sure to say you are attending the O'Dwyer rally as the hotel is completely booked up outside of our block and they will tell you there are no rooms available. If you run into problems or need help with finding a B & B, please contact me and I will try to find you a place to stay in the area. The rooms at the Ramada are at a discounted 76.50 B & B per person shaing. The rooms must be booked before Easter or we will let any not booked go back to the hotel. The hotel has a par 72 golf course, and a health spa, including a swimming pool, spa bath, massage and beauty treatment rooms. The restaurant is lovely and the bar area fantastic. The Tipperary Racecourse is just down the road, and there is hunting and fishing and hill-walking available. If you fly into either Dublin or Shannon, you can take a train to Limerick Junction and the hotel will pick you up there. Dan Doolay, just down the road, has rental cars available, so you don't need a car until you get to Tipp. Friday night will have the Diaspora book launch with drinks and music afterwards. Saturday will have lectures on clan music, and the history and lore of the O'Dwyers. There will also be a discussion on the O'Dwyer DNA results. Lunch will be followed by a bus tour of places of interest, and that followed by a dinner and music. If you are still on your feet, there are pubs to visit! Father Christy O'Dwyer will offer Sunday mass at Solohead church, and the clan will gather after lunch to talk and talk ( and probably drink a little). Janet
HI Janet, I wish I could be there, but second best, I wish I could get some kind of report on the proceedings. My ancestor is James Dwyer, reportedly born in Holycross parish July 12, 1818. (Per headstone for date and notes made by a priest for place). Tipperary Family History Research cannot find a record of his baptism or that of any of his siblings. The priest's notes indicate his parents were John Dwyer and Margaret (or Mary?) Fogarty. I believe that James and brothers Timothy, Thomas and maybe Martin immigrated around 1851-1852, possibly through New Orleans, and settled in Greene County, Ohio. Thomas died young and unmarried, I've found no trace of martin except the naturalization papers James and Timothy had large families. They also had sisters Honorah and Margaret, one of who may have married a Daly and moved to Missouri...again from the priest's notes, which were hard to decipher! I found a brother Malachi who settled in Australia. Records there show Malachi with same parents and originating from Golden, another Tipp. parish. An old family legend has it that the family was split up after having trouble at sea when rescuing ships took some passengers to new Orleans and others to Australia. I have letters written by Malachi's descendants to James's son Frank. James married Anna (aka Nancy) Waters Timothy married Bridget Kavanaugh Do you know who is running the Dwyer DNA project? Is there any place to find out more about the O'Dwyer clan organization? I'll be away from the computer for a few days, look forward to news when I get back!
