Janet, I think you might have read my reply wrong. There is indeed a townland called Thomastown in Clogheen PLU, in the Ardfinnan Registrar's district, Derrygrath civil parish. What I was telling Bon was that in the Clogheen PLU, I don't find a Registrar's district of Thomastown, to then be able to find a townland within that registrar's district that approximates the townland on her death cert. When I couldn't find a registrar's district by that name, I reversed it and looked in the Thomastown PLU for a registrar's district of Clogheen and again came up empty. It's so confusing to people not familiar with the methods of description. A Superintendent Registrar's District is the same as a Poor Law Union. In Dublin, the certs are filed by Superintendent Registrar's District, but in the county, they are filed by the Registrar's District. On the actual cert, the fill in the blank parts are the PLU/Superintendent Registrar's District, then the subdivision of the Registrar's District. Based on Bon's statement of "The district was Thomastown, and the Superintendent Registrar's district was Clogheen", I can go to my Townlands in Poor Law Unions book and look in Clogheen PLU for a district called Thomastown, and then see what townlands are in that district. It's a handy guide because so many times the actual townland gets mangled for whatever reason. Anyway, in Clogheen PLU, there are just 3 Registrar's districts, Caher, Clogheen and Ardfinnan, so no Thomastown. Sometimes, I think we need to put up the townlands in each PLU for Tipperary, along with what Registrar's district they are in. Cindy
