6-12-1883 A number of unemployed labourers waited upon the Tipperary Board of Guardians to request Outdoor relief or employment. Their manner was so menacing that it was decided to admit but one at a time. They represented that their families were starving. They wanted employment, but the farmers would not assist them. The Board informed them that they had no power either to give employment or outdoor relief. They could only offer them admission to the workhouse. One of the labourers, with a family of eight, said if he went into the workhouse, he would have to give up his house, and thus lose it. Could not the Board assist them to emigrate? The Chairman intimated that they could not help them in that way. The applicants then left. Mary
