Hi Maeve, I have found the primary reason for association with a particular parish for baptism (and marriages) seems to be through the female side of the family. The baptisms seem to occur in the wife's church. I have three families in the Moyaliff area that is in the southern most portion of the Upperchurch parish. One family went to Upperchurch for baptisms - the wife was from Glown, just west of the village of Upperchurch. The other two went to Holycross for baptisms, just to the east of Moyaliff. I believe the wives were from the Holycross area but Holycross is also a lot closer than Upperchurch so that might have played a role in the decision. There is a good chance that your Mary Maher was from Upperchurch parish. I have an observation about Thurles and your Dwyer's association with that parish. In my research I have found persons who were thought to be from Thurles or near Thurles or from the Thurles area were in fact found to be living elsewhere. Part of the confusion stems from the fact that Thurles is a town, a parish and Pool Law Union. The other part comes from the fact that Thurles was the market town for the area and sometimes people referenced their point of origin as Thurles because it was better known than the smaller surrounding townlands.
