    1. Re: [IRL-TIP] Kilmaine help please?

To date I have not been able to find where her mother Mary NEIL/NAIL was born, as her records say that she was born "Kilmain, Tipperary". === Estelle, If I were a betting person, I'd choose the much larger and more populous Killenaule in S. Tipperary as a starting point. The Killenaule townland on your map image is the one in N. Tipp. It is a relatively small townland (even though it is divided into two parts by a civil parish boundary-line) and currently contains less than a half-dozen buildings. I'd guess that it was never densely populated. It is less than a half-mile from the Little Brosna River (which, as far as I know, has been the Tipp/Offaly border here for centuries), but is about six miles from the Kilmaine "way over" in Offaly. The Killenaule town in S. Tipp. had over 700 residents in 2002 (they lost a hundred by 2006), and has been a significant center for this area of the county even back into the 1800's. The problem here is the lack of a nearby Kilmaine. Sooooooooooo........I started fooling-around with alternative spellings/pronunciations. I first started with Kilmeen. No luck. Then the Kyle- locations. Nope. Then I went to the Cuil- townlands. Nothing there. However (if you're still with me [gr]), we could stretch-this all the way to Coolmoyne. It certainly doesn't look like Kilmaine, but it's possible that someone heard it that way and wrote it down as such. There are three Coolmoyne townlands, in a cluster, across the Rathcool and Tullamain civil parishes, about seven mile SW of Killenaule town. It's not the best answer I could wish for, but it's the only choice I can see. Perhaps someone else will have some better ideas. I certainly hope so.........
