    1. [IRL-TIP] Any thought on personal forname Ant/Anto/Anta
    2. Clare Tuohy
    3. Hallo all I have come across this personal name in a number of forms and at times have had difficulty in deciding if it was referring to a female or male. Ant Anta - Assuming female Anto - Assuming male Am also interested to find out what Ant is a contraction for - I'm thinking of Anastatia which was quite a common personal name in some parts of Tipperary. Would welcome any views. Clare Tuohy -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. We are a community of 6 million users fighting spam. SPAMfighter has removed 450 of my spam emails to date. 3. Hi Clare. I can't help you out on your question but I wondered just what type of 'forms' you're finding this on, and in what context. Is it where a given name (forename) should be? I've done a lot of census (US) transcribing, but have never come across something like this. I've seen many male names shortened...Tho & Thos for Thomas; Geo for George; and Jas for James are most prevalent, but I've never come across a shortened form of a female name. Are these all Irish forms where this occurs? It's quite interesting. 3. Thanks to everybody for your replies. Terry I have come across these names in RC parish records mainly in Tipperary. And as I said at times I find it difficult to decide if male or female. Just posting a few examples so you can see what the difficulty is. 5 April 1835 Anto? of James Doyle and Bridget Gleeson Sprs Willm Tuohy Mary Byrne Grange (Not sure if this is male or female) 1 July 1835 Bridget of Patrick Fanning and Judy Maher John Ryan and Anto Maher (would expect this to be female) 6 Mar 1837 Anty of James Purcel and Bridget Doyle (assume female) 24 Dec 1867 Robert of Robert Stakelum and Anto Ryan (B. Howe = Townland) Sprs Timothey Stakelum and Ellen Stakelum (from this looks like Anto is female) May 1 1870 William of Terence Gorman and Catherine Callanan Glenreigh Sprs David Meara and Anto Gleeson (not sure) [Terence Gorman and Catherine Callanan were my ggrandparents.] 16 Mar 1875 Anto of Terence Gorman Catherine Callanan Glanreigh Sprs John Kennedy Bridget Broderick (male or female??) Just checked the last one on the civil registration index. The entry shows the same forename and have just realised that if I get a copy of the cert I will get the answer.
