Around 1872-5 our John O'BRIEN g-g-grandparents emigrated from Ballingarry, Cashel Diocese, Slievardah Barony, County Tipperary South Riding to Clinton, Clinton County, Iowa. There are 3 Ballingarry townlands in Co. Tipperary, the others being in North Riding. Our Tipperary branch consisted of John C. O'RIEN/BRYAN (abt. 1830-1878) & his wife Catherine READY/REDDY (1832-aft. 1880), 5 children born Ballingarry: Catherine "Kit" (1858-), Veronica Jane "Jeanne" (1861-1939), John Cornelius (1868-1934), & baby Mary Gertrude "Mayme" (abt. 1871-). In Clinton, Iowa, they had James (1876) and Margaret Ellen (1879-). Based on birth date, an abstract of Ballingarry Parish Records show our Jane possibly mis-copied as James. The delicate originals were in a Convent in Thurles at the time and I did not see them. Unfortunately, there was not a listing of Baptism sponsors given to me. However, we did get likely parents of our immigrants as: John BRIEN baptized of John BRIEN & Margaret KELLY; his wife Catherine REDDY, Upper Ballingary dau. of Thomas READY and Ellen DONNELL/CONNELL. There was also a possible earlier John BRIEN b. 1814 to Tim BRIEN and Judith CROKE. Griffth's show various locations for John BRYAN in Ballingarry area, both Upper and Lower Ballingarry Road, along with the rest of the surnames. A Ballingarry Cornelius O'BRIEN was a member of the South Riding Assis Jury which indicates that the jury member was a strong farmer with voting rights. CROKEs were said to be their good neighbors both on Ballingarry farm and in Clinton, Iowa. KELLYs are all over Griffth's as well. Still sharing & learning, M.M.M.
