Hello listers This is a shot in the dark. I'm hoping someone may direct me where to begin to look for the marriage of William McGrath and Mary Maher probably a few years before 1822. Their son Michael was my great-great grandfather who emigrated in 1847 and settled in Bytown, now Ottawa, Canada. Michael was born circa 1822 and died in 1901 in Ottawa. He was a labourer and worked in a quarry once in Canada. I have no further information on this family in Ireland. I am not certain that they are from Tipperary but have been advised it is possible given the surnames. Michael married Catherine Brennan, from Clogh in Co. Kilkenny, in Ottawa in 1854. Their marriage certificate gives his parents names as above but no other details. Ann Burns Ottawa, Canada
Ann- I believe the primary concentration of Mahers is in and around Thurles, Tipperary. My sister did our family study and all of our people are from around Thurles, Tipperary. Our 3G male ancestor was baptized in Ballybristy, which is a townland near Thurles, in 1811. What we have of the historical record is that the O Mechair were there from at least the time of St. Patrick, and were possibly even converted by Patrick himself.
