    3. In response to Jan Kenney Fortado -- I have no indication of a Spillane connection in my family. My Fogartys lived in and around Templemore. My great-grandfather John Fogarty who married Margaret Kennedy was christened in 1831. He was a son of John Fogarty and Margaret Brophy. I very much suspect he was a grandson of John Fogarty and Mary Morrissey. It appears that my great-grandmother`s parents were Roger Kennedy and Ellen Fogarty, farming at Cloncannon in 1870 at the time of the Fogarty-Kennedy marriage.. In 1977 there was a Mrs Nora McGrath at Killea whose maiden name was Fogarty. Mrs McGrath was a retired schoolteacher. It appears she was born in about 1890. Mrs McGrath reported in 1977 -- "There were Fogartys at Ballaheen before Carden`s day and one family remained as herds for Carden up to my young days .... " Mrs McGrath said there were Ryan and Coffey families in her maternal ancestry. She said she had known only some aunts on her father`s side, "as the boys had to leave the country after the Fenian rising". Official records show that a Thomas Fogarty aged 21 in 1867 was sentenced that year at the Clonmel assizes in County Tipperary to five years` transportation for treason and came to Western Australia in 1868 by the ship "Hougoumont". A lot of Fenians came out on that voyage. Thomas Keneally`s book "The Great Shame" is considerably concerned with the "Hougoumont" convicts. The book identifies Thomas Fogarty as a Fenian and says he had a brother at Portland in Maine, U.S.A. Official records state that Thomas Fogarty departed from Western Australia in 1869 on a ship bound for Sydney shortly after being pardoned. I have a theory that he settled in Melbourne.
