    3. The smallest division in Griffith's Valuation is the townland, not the town. Towns were often made up of several townlands. Sometimes towns were in more than one parish also. In this case, Toomyvara is entirely within the civil parish of Aghnameadle, and in the townlands of Castlequarter, Coolkereen, and Bunacum. Within each of those townlands, you will find a subsection called Town of Toomyvara, and that is further divided by street names. To search by townland on the http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php website, you need to select the "Place-name Search <http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_place_search_form.php> option" at the bottom of the page, then choose Tipperary (not north or south) for county, then Aghnameadle as parish. Cycle through the townland names above by typing them into the blank. The name in the "placename" column on the webpage that is returned from the search is usually either the townland name or the street name (without the name of the town in the case of Toomyvara, so you have no clue where it is except by knowing what towns are in that parish and townland). I have a subscription to Origins, which has a much more user-friendly interface to Griffith's that allows you to search on place name and then page through all the images that appear on nearby pages in the original Griffith's Valuation - not just the pages for that townland. I can also search on Toomyvara at Origins and find out which townlands it was listed under in Griffith's. I don't think you can do either of those things at the askaboutireland website, which is why I still have my Origins subscription!
