Could it be a misspelling? I was helping somebody with the surname Hetherington. There were variants and I did indeed find them in Ireland although the name didn't sound Irish. I'm always surprised with some of the surnames, like Johnson. The Vikings, Normans and others were occupiers so I guess Irish surnames are really varied.
