I remember my mother saying we were related to the Quirk family. My mother's maiden name was Kane. Her ancestors immigrated from County Kerry in the 1850s. An excellent database for County Kerry is www.irishgenealogy.ie . On a search I found many by the name of Quirk. Patrick Quirk born June 22, 1834, in Gurrane, County Kerry, Parish of Killeentierna; and Patrick Quirk born April 6, 1834, in Killarney, Parish of Killarney. No result for marriage of Patrick Quirk and Mariah Kane. I was reading a bit online and came across a blog I hadn't seen called "Free Irish Genealogy E-Books". Maybe I am the last to see it. The blog pulls together free digitized books related to Irish Genealogy. It takes a bit of work to look through these, but so does a library. http://freeirishgenebooks.blogspot.com/ I found this mentioned on the blog by Deborah Large Fox called "Help! The Faerie Folk hid my Ancestors". Also a neat blog about Irish Research. http://irishfamilyresearch.blogspot.com/ It is really nice that so many "classic" books about Ireland and Irish Genealogy are being put online. Christina
Ugh! Forgive all the typos. I need to reread before I hit send.:) Chris
The 1911 census is free on Ancestry.uk over the weekend. http://www.ancestry.co.uk/1911?AID=11058815&PID=5737308 I checked it out. After a search it asks for you name and email before you can see the records. That seemed to be pretty much all. So, if you have been wanted to try the English 1911 census, this is your chance. Hope you have some luck. BTW, this news came from Claire Santry's blog which I recommend. http://irish-genealogy-news.blogspot.com/2012/05/1911-census-for-england-wales-free-all.html Christina
Thanks to everyone for your thoughts on the Surname Registry. I have been a little swamped with things (especially headstones) coming in for the IGP Archives. I had a run on new names coming in for the Surname Page and wondered if I should let it go. I have asked a friend who has been a big help on the Longford and Westmeath pages if she could manage the Registry for me. She does that for Westmeath and for Ireland GenWeb. She has agreed to do this for Tipperary so that will be a big help. I have emailed the people from A-K so I could do a cleanup of sorts. That alone took good chunks out of two days. LOL My wonderful buddy's name is Kathy Snowberger. She has actually always been willing to help going back to about 1999 when I took on my first County. When she gets situated, please report emails that bounce. It is the only way to keep the page from getting out of date and frustrating for researchers. Thanks again for all the feedback I have received. I too believe the registry is a great resource. There seems to be more and more folks interested in genealogy. I think the 2 genealogy shows in the US has spurred interest here in the US. "Who Do You Think You Are" is well publicized but I like " Finding Your Roots" on PBS better(less commercials). I may not visit the site everyday but I do like the fact that it's there for references. I believe the registry has great value and that will increase as more people get involved in finding their roots Art Mulholland Researching Mulholland, Mockler, Campion, and Ryan from around Littleton Tipperary. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Christina Hunt" <chrisnina@gmail.com> To: <irl-tipperary@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 08, 2012 8:10 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-TIP] Surname Registry has Value > Thanks Maureen. > The Vote is running slightly more than 50/50 - but not much interest. > I am working to update the page. I'd like to see the registry continue. My email is still ej@tampabay.rr.com Thanks! Erin James
I would like to keep the surname registry if possible please. My email address is still valid (SURNAME - LATHAM) and I have had some great contacts from people via this registry. Thanks for all the great work that is done to keep it all up to date.
Hello! I am searching for relatives of Lovat Ashe MULCAHY, who emigrated to Argentina in 1867. He was son of John Moore Mulcahy of Ballybrien and Margaret (Margaretta) Mary Ashe (John's second wife), living in the area of Clonmel, Cahir, Sommerville, Tipperary. John Moore Mucahy had two brothers, Edmund (Edmond) Moore and Southwell Moore, and a sister, Elizabeth Moore Mulcahy. So far, I have only been able to trace the names of Lovat Ashe's half brothers by John Moore's first wife, Maria Bradshaw. They were: Edmund and William Mulcahy. Any information will be welcome. -----Mensaje original----- De: irl-tipperary-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-tipperary-bounces@rootsweb.com] En nombre de Wendy Kurz Enviado el: miƩrcoles, 09 de mayo de 2012 05:49 a.m. Para: irl-tipperary@rootsweb.com Asunto: Re: [IRL-TIP] Surname Registry IRL-TIPPERARY Digest, Vol 7, Issue 62 I would like to keep the surname registry if possible please. Thanks Maureen. The Vote is running slightly more than 50/50 - but not much interest. I am working to update the page. I hate tons of dead email addresses. I fixed your surnames. Thank you for handling the IGP Tipperary Surname Registry. The up-dating of contacts must be a pain. Over the years, I've made sure to register each of my known Surnames & their parish locations in Ireland. Upon checking, 2 of my 3 e-mail addys on County Tipperary don't seem to work today. We have 19th C. ancestors in Tipperary, Cavan, Sligo, and Mayo counties. On the Tipperary listings, someone I knew long ago has resurfaced via the Surname Registry and we have exchanged many old photographs. Over the years, I have contacted others as well. So yes, using the Surname Registry has paid off Big Time for our families. Maureen Melvin Morrow (O'BRIEN, REEDY, O'CONNELL of Ballingarry, So. Rid., County Tipperary)
Good Morning from cold, but sunny, Australia. Could someone please explain to me the entry for Denis Hogan "for an injury - Parish of Corbally". Does this mean Denis Hogan suffered an injury, or does it mean he caused an injury to someone else? I am trying to find out why my Denis Hogan ancestor was sent to Australia as a convict on the "Parmelia", arriving here in very early 1834. I presume his trial was in the latter half of 1833. I have no knowledge of the names of his parents, or where in Tipperary he lived, nor do I know why he was sent here, apart from "being in the wrong place at the wrong time". Any help would be greatly appreciated. Surely I am not the only one looking for Denis. Liz, These men were asking for work orders on road etc. and a few seem to have been asking for recompense for a loss they suffered. If is not really stated clearly. A Burning. An injury. My take is that these are all people wanting payment for something. The IGP Tipperary site has a Surname Registry. It is getting old, that is, the majority of our Surnames are a few years old. I suspect most would bounce if they were emailed. http://www.igp-web.com/tipperary/index.htm I am considering dropping this page because: 1. I don't have the time to keep the Surname Page up to date. 2. Personally I can't think of anytime I have actually found anything using a Surname Registry. 3. I can't recall anyone contacting me because of an entry I personally made on a Surname Registry. 4. We have a Query Message page which doesn't require manual entry by the webmaster. I have created a simple survey. Please vote Yes or No if you have an opinion. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DY553YW I will decide in a couple of days. Thanks! Christina
