    1. [IRL-TIP] Eliza Kylie CAREY of Tipperary
    2. ELIZA CAREY (Cary) needlewoman, born about 1834/5 emigrated from Ireland to Hobart, Tasmania in 1858 on the “Trade Wind” On the passenger list she gave her place of birth as Tipperary. On her Tasmanian marriage certificate she gave her parents as PETER CAREY & ANN CLARK CAREY. Witness to her marriage were John & Rebecca Clark – how were this couple related to Eliza ? There were 9 additional members of the Carey family. The women gave their occupation as needlewoman, two of the boys were draper’s apprentices, the men were millers, all could read & write. These passengers were sponsored by the Hobart Immigration Aid Society. Any assistance in finding information relating to Eliza and her family in Ireland would be most appreciated. Alan Elliott

    1. [IRL-TIP] Re Pat Connor's Headstones - Carey (Brownlee & Hogan)
    2. Elizabeth Walker
    3. Good afternoon Pat, from sunny, wintry, Australia, I noticed in your photographs of headstones, one for a Carey person. I am a descendent of a Margaret Carey who left Ireland though Cork with a Julia Carey - presumably a relative, to go to England to join a ship to come to Australia under a scheme to bring single young women to this country. My question is, can you tell me if the surname Carey is more or less restricted to one county, as I think Hogan is to Tipperary? My ancestor Denis Hogan, came from somewhere in Tipperary to Australia in 1832/3, as a convict, but we don't know what he did to be sent here, and it seems he might just have been in the wrong place, at the wrong time. Nor do we know the names of his parents. Margaret Carey and Julia Carey left Ireland, ca 1833 to join one of the Female Immigrant Ships leaving England for Australia, not long after Denis arrived here, and I have wondered if Denis and Margaret might have known each other, before Denis got into trouble in Tipperary. Denis and Margaret married in 1842, after the birth of their second child - my gt. grandfather, John Hogan. Julia Carey married James Brownlee, I think in 1834. Denis Hogan died in 1850 and Margaret died in 1853 - their four children were put into care - I presume a Catholic Orphanage. The youngest boy, Timothy, died in the 1840s, the girl, Mary, we have no further knowledge, but I was told years ago that someone in the Hogan family became a Nun, so this might have been Mary b. 1845. The other two boys, James and John (my ancestor), died in the 1890s, both leaving big families. I have a little bit of info on Julia and James Brownlee, and they had a terrible time, caught in a huge grass fire, and I think one of them died from their wounds. Liz Walker (nee Hogan). 3. Pat, I attach below my notes on my ancestors. Please take a look and see if there is any fit. We don't have any Patricks that I know of, but New Inn has certainly come up in my research. Andrew O'Donnell and Margaret O'Donnell were my great grandparents. She was from the Bansha/Kilmoyler area. I'm still trying to locate him, and also a Richard O'Donnell who was listed as a sponsor on their daughter, Ellen's, birth certificate in the Ballylooby area. Let me know if you sense any match. Cindy Andrew O'Donnell and Margaret O'Donnell Andrew O'Donnell Born 1805 (or 1806 or 1810?) in County Tipperary 1849 emigrated with wife and 4 children to US (appears in 1850 Illinois census) May 14, 1889 died in LaSalle County, IL, at 83 years old (?) Married January 31, 1837, in Bansha/Kilmoyler parish to Margaret O'Donnell Margaret O'Donnell's Baptismal Certificate (from Tipperary Family History Research center) Margaret O'Donnell August 6, 1821 Bansha/Kilmoyler parish Address: Ballydrehid Father: O'Donnell Brien Mother: Lonergan Margaret Sponsor: MacGrath William and Butler Biddy Register 1820/005 In Father O'Dwyer's parish records in Bansha, I found the entry with this information: Father: Brian Donnell Mother: Lonergan Mary Marriage Certificate (from Tipperary Family History Research center) Andrew O'Donnell and Margaret O'Donnell January 31, 1837 in Bansha/Kilmoyler parish Register reference 1837/0 Witnessed by: O'Donnell Brian Ryan In Father O'Dwyer's parish records in Bansha, I found the entry with this information: Mgt Donnell Present: Thos. Donnell, Brian Donnell, Wm Ryan Children 1. Mary Agnes, born 1839/40 in County Tipperary (I believe she had a child named Ellen) 2. Hannah or Johanna, born 1841 in County Tipperary 3. John, born 1844 in County Tipperary 4. Catherine, born 1845 in County Tipperary (all of the above children died in Illinois) 5. Michael, born 1851 in Ottawa, IL (my great grandfather) 6. James, born 1858 7. Thomas, born 1861 Ellen O'Donnell Birth and Baptismal Certificate (from parish priest of Ballylooby) Ellen O'Donnell, baptized in Catholic Church on Nov. 8, 1845, in Church of St. Kerian and Our Lady. Parents: Andrew O'Donnell and Margaret O'Donnell. Sponsors: Richard O'Donnell and Catherine Clifford. Diocese of Waterford and Lismore, Parish of Ballylooby and Duhill. Is this Ellen child no. 4 Catherine above?? Notes 1. 1850 Illinois census, Margaret and Andrew were staying with a Margaret Dobbins in Illinois. A Bridget Dobbins Condon, buried in Ottawa, IL, indicates she is from Clomore (Clanmore?), and other O'Donnels in Ottawa were from Cahir, but a prior researcher said they are not related to my O'Donnells, but we're not sure. 2. I found an 1821 census fragment found online, parish of Newchapel, townland of Clenham ? (Ballyclerahan?), an Andrew Donnell (aged 50) and wife Ellen, and children Ed, John Andrew (aged 21), Joseph, Michael and Thomas. 3. In the Index to Griffith's Valuation, there are 3 Andrew O'Donnells and no Andrew Donnells: 1) parish Caher, location Rathmore, 2) Tullaghmelan, Oldgrange, and 3) Whitechurch and Poulaculleare. 4. Seems to me it can't be too difficult to locate the birth/baptismal certificates of 4 children born in County Tipperary. Seems we should try Cahir, Rathmore, Newchapel, Ballylooby areas for starters. 5. Also locating the birth/marriage/death certificate of Brian O'Donnell and Margaret Lonergan of Ballydrehid for further information on Margaret. In my notes from LaSalle County, IL, I see a Margaret Lonergan died in Ireland (never emigrated) on April 17, 1845. Could this be her mother?? 6. I'm also interested in passenger records and naturalization. 3. Thank you to everyone who responded and/or who looked up Patrick Lonergan. I'm not sure that any of those Patrick Lonergan's are the correct one. Patrick also went by P.F. according to the Tasmanian newspapers at the time. Patrick was born in 1861. I believe that his first wife was Alice Dempsey and that two of their children may have been born in Ireland sometime after 1884. He died in April of 1937. Thanks, Mary

    3. Liz, Pat may have more information, but let me begin with this: Although the Hogan's started in Ormond in Tipperary, thry are now among the 100 most common names in Ireland and found all over Munster, Connaught and So. Leinster. Uí hÓgáin translates to young and I suspect the Young's of Ormond, or some of them, may actually be Hogan's farther back. Ardcrony was their seat. Carey and Carew are interchangeable and you should always watch for either name when tracing back. Carew is pretty much in Tipp and Limerick for the most part, but Carey's can be found all over Ireland and can also be found under Keary, Kerin(s), Kearns?, Keighery, Ciarin, Cardew, MacKeefrey, etc. Janet On Sun, May 27, 2012 at 7:38 AM, Elizabeth Walker <lizrose@tpg.com.au> wrote: > Good afternoon Pat, from sunny, wintry, Australia, > > I noticed in your photographs of headstones, one for a Carey person. > I am a descendent of a Margaret Carey who left Ireland though Cork with > a Julia Carey - presumably a relative,  to go to England to join a ship > to come to Australia under a scheme to bring single young women to this > country. > > My question is, can you tell me if the surname Carey is more or less > restricted to one county, as I think Hogan is to Tipperary?    My > ancestor Denis Hogan, came from somewhere in Tipperary to Australia in > 1832/3, as a convict, but we don't know what he did to be sent here, and > it seems he might just have been in the wrong place, at the wrong time. >   Nor do we know the names of his parents. > > Margaret  Carey and Julia Carey left Ireland, ca 1833 to join one of > the Female Immigrant Ships leaving England for Australia, not long after > Denis arrived here, and I have wondered if Denis and Margaret might have > known each other, before Denis got into trouble in Tipperary. > > Denis and Margaret married in 1842, after the birth of their second > child - my gt. grandfather, John Hogan.  Julia Carey married James > Brownlee, I think in 1834.   Denis Hogan died in 1850 and Margaret died > in 1853 - their four children were put into care - I presume a Catholic > Orphanage.    The youngest boy, Timothy, died in the 1840s, the girl, > Mary, we have no further knowledge, but I was told years ago that > someone in the Hogan family became a Nun, so this might have been Mary > b. 1845.  The other two boys, James and John (my ancestor), died in the > 1890s, both leaving big families. > > I have a little bit of info on Julia and James Brownlee, and they had a > terrible time, caught in a huge grass fire, and I think one of them died > from their wounds. > > Liz Walker (nee Hogan). > Lake Macquarie,   Aust. > > On 27/05/2012 9:29 AM, Pat Connors wrote: >> I have just updated the surname registries on the Tipperary section of >> my website: >> http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/tipp/ >> >> If you have submitted your surnames and either your information and/or >> your email address has changed, submit a new form.  Fill in your name, >> surname and email address and then in the fields needing changing. >> Put CHANGE in the field also, along with your info. >> >> >> >> -- >> Pat Connors, Sacramento CA >> http://www.connorsgenealogy.com >> ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ >> Tipperary Queries >> http://pub14.bravenet.com/forum/static/show.php?usernum=1200795777&frmid=84&cmd=show >> ------------------------------- >> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email toIRL-TIPPERARY-request@rootsweb.com  with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >> >> >> > > ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ > Tipperary Queries > http://pub14.bravenet.com/forum/static/show.php?usernum=1200795777&frmid=84&cmd=show > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-TIPPERARY-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
