HOLMES - Mary Augusta HOLMES, alias POSTIE, lived in Summerhill, Nenagh, Tipperary c. 1844-1900, She died in Cornwall, England (Mevagissey) in 1903. Mary Augusta HOLMES married John Hamilton DUNDAS or John HAMILTON-DUNDAS in Dublin in 1844. She was probably his second wife. John was born in Abercorn, West Lothian, Scotland, in 1805. John was a Captain in the Royal Scots and then, commencing in 1841, a Major in the 85th Foot. He died in 1867 in Summerhill, Neneagh, Tipperary. A possible son of John Hamilton DUNDAS is John Henry Hamilton DUNDAS (known as Henry) who claims to have born in Tipperary, Ireland (c. 1823). It is unlikely that Henry's mother was Mary Augusta HOLMES; given the dates, Mary Augusta was likely his step-mother. On the other hand, one never can be certain. (John) Henry DUNDAS served in the 52nd Foot until he was promoted to Asst. Surgeon in the 67th Foot. He served in India and retired to Tasmania, Australia, where he died in 1894. Looking for any HOLMES or POSTIE descendant who may have additional information regarding Mary Augusta HOLMES, alias POSTIE. Was she originally from Nenagh, Tipperary? Did she have children with John Hamilton DUNDAS? Also, attempting to determine if John Hamilton DUNDAS had a first wife who may have died in Tipperary. Any assistance or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Daniel Hunt (birth date unknown) married Ann Shaw, daughter of Richard Shaw (1673-1729) and his wife Judith Briscoe (b. Abt 1677-?) of Fiddown, Co. Kilkenny which is quite near the southeast border of Tipperary. Daniel Hunt and Ann Shaw had two children: A son Thomas Hunt (abt 1735-abt 1822). Married Elizabeth (?) and lived in Co. Waterford. And a daughter, Jane Hunt (abt. 1737-1827) who married John Chaloner. John and Jane Hunt Chaloner lived near Fethard. These families had ties with Fethard and Clonmel. My g.mother, Johanna Ryan (Shea) was born c. 1868 to Patrick (c. 1845) and Mary (c.1840). In her prayer book she wrote "Johanna Ryan; Carhue; Co. Tipp.; Ireland". She had older sibs, William and Julia, and younger sibs John and Winifred. Her mother's name could possibly have been Fahey/Fahy. All the above came to the States in 1883 and settled in Cohoes, NY., with the exception of Julia, who married James Burke in Ireland, and settled in Chicago..The Burkes also came in 1883. 1900 US census lists Mary as having 10 children, 5 living. Looking for info on my ggggrandfather John Coonan 1812-1862 who was from Tipperary. He would have come to Canada (Montreal) sometime before 1842 when his oldest son was born. Hi Carol, There is evidently a concentration of Carey (and Carew - apparently interchangeable) families in Tipperary, bothe protestant and RC. I expect you know this site with its Powerstown details, but if you haven't, see for example: The Origin of the Carey family of Ireland, by Patrick Carey. Notes on the Irish surname Carey with extra information of County Tipperary and the Clonmel area, at http://www.careyroots.com/careyirish.html Also: http://www.rootsweb.com/~irltip2/registry.htm I'll see what a paid search for Carey in St Mary's Clonmel turns up. Linda The RC Church in Baltimore City kept excellent records and, I believe, they are all held at the State Archives in Annapolis as well as Diocesan Headquarters. As a shortcut, you may wish to specifically check out St. James near N. Charles Street, which FORMALLY became an Irish Parish in 1848. However, the Irish were moving rapidly into this area much earlier. Hi Walt, I also have been researching a William Carey of Co. Tipperary. His daughter Bridget Carey b. 1827 married Anthony Carroll in Wi. USA in 1849 and settled in Wi. On her death certificate it states her parents as William Carey and Katherine "Nagle" Carey of Co. Tipperary. Anthony Carroll emigrated to Wi. in 1849 from Powerstown Parish, near Clonmel, and they may have come over on the same ship as they were married 5 mo. after arriving in the USA and on ship records it states a Bridget Carey on the same ship. I have not been able to find any info on this William and Catherine Nagle Carey. I did find they did have another daughter Alice "Carey" Neville b 1841 living also in Wi., also the possibility of another daughter Mary who married a Keogh in Wi. This info came from an old autograph book belonging to Bridget and William Carrolls daughter. Due to the different birth dates of the children of William and Catherine Carey, I am sure there were more born to them. Could there be any connection? Carol
Linda: Don't overlook censuses for Maryland. Check with Ancestry or Heritage to see if they have anything. Have you checked to see what vital records are available for Baltimore at that period of time? What about early city directories? Meagher would not be a terribly common name; I would look up every Meagher family that I could find on the 1830 census for Baltimore MD. It will list head of household only, but from it you might be able to get an idea of the area in which they lived, then check out what church would have been in the area that would serve the population. There might also be some tax records. I would go to www.familysearch.com and look under Baltimore MD and see what records are available for rent from your local FHC.
