    1. Re: Death Record question
    2. Janet, I think you might have read my reply wrong. There is indeed a townland called Thomastown in Clogheen PLU, in the Ardfinnan Registrar's district, Derrygrath civil parish. What I was telling Bon was that in the Clogheen PLU, I don't find a Registrar's district of Thomastown, to then be able to find a townland within that registrar's district that approximates the townland on her death cert. When I couldn't find a registrar's district by that name, I reversed it and looked in the Thomastown PLU for a registrar's district of Clogheen and again came up empty. It's so confusing to people not familiar with the methods of description. A Superintendent Registrar's District is the same as a Poor Law Union. In Dublin, the certs are filed by Superintendent Registrar's District, but in the county, they are filed by the Registrar's District. On the actual cert, the fill in the blank parts are the PLU/Superintendent Registrar's District, then the subdivision of the Registrar's District. Based on Bon's statement of "The district was Thomastown, and the Superintendent Registrar's district was Clogheen", I can go to my Townlands in Poor Law Unions book and look in Clogheen PLU for a district called Thomastown, and then see what townlands are in that district. It's a handy guide because so many times the actual townland gets mangled for whatever reason. Anyway, in Clogheen PLU, there are just 3 Registrar's districts, Caher, Clogheen and Ardfinnan, so no Thomastown. Sometimes, I think we need to put up the townlands in each PLU for Tipperary, along with what Registrar's district they are in. Cindy

    1. Death Record Question
    2. Bon: I tried to take a look at your death record and got only the left side of the page, is this the only part you have online? One thing I did notice was that you've purchased a long form copy of the certificate--which means you got someone from today transcribing what they think they read on a certificate written 125 years ago. If that person is not familiar with the locations, or the handwriting, well you can see where the problems might arise. I have a copy of the book Townlands in Poor Law Unions, from 1885, so just shortly after your death was registered. Unfortunately, there appears to be no district called Thomastown in the Clogheen Superintendents district. On a hunch, I went to the Thomastown Superintendent's district, but they have nothing called Clogheen. I usually don't disagree with Pete, but in this case, I might, because Mullaghnoney townland is in the Clonmel Superintendent's district. I do have a townland candidate, just based on how it would sound to someone dealing with an accent from the north of Ireland or even England, and that would be the townland of Monaloughra in Shanrahan civil parish. At this point, I would probably advise that you get a photocopy of the actual register entry. With that you are looking at the actual entry made in 1879. If you want to email me privately, about March 28, and remind me, I can pick up a copy of the actual entry when I'm in Dublin. I'm heading over there on March 30. Cindy

    2. Bon M
    3. Greetings from Florida. My name is Bonnie (I go by "Bon" usually) and it looks like one of my ancestors spent his final days in Tipperary. I've only found this out (he moved all over the place, having been a former army man) and this is my first chance to look at Tipperary sources. The problem is, I can't read the townland on the certificate! I scanned the relevent part of the document and it's here: http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a382/TBonzie/AG.gif Mullahraney? But I don't see that name on any townland list that I've seen online. The district was Thomastown, and the Superintendent Registrar's district was Clogheen, but in spite of intensive searching, I just can't make out what that townland in column two is! Without figuring it out, I am unable to figure out in which parish to have a look. Andrew Graham was born in Monaghan, married an Englishwoman while in Manchester England and served at various places in Ireland including a short stint in Clonmel. According to his service record, he was in Tipperary in 1834 for part of the year, and also in 1837. I don't know where he was from 1839 (when he finished his military service) until 1862 when his daughter married in Clogher, Tyrone county. (The informant on this death record, on the half that I didn't scan, was from "Tully Broom" which is the townland directly next door to where Andrew lived in Tyrone in 1862.) This family has been a real puzzlement. I have at least 5 children including my ancestor, born in Ireland, but of course, "Ireland" is very vague. I have not found the baptisms in Tyrone, and now with finding this death records and knowing he was there in the mid to late 1830s, I will turn my attention to Tipperary. This should be interesting, as this is a whole new county for me. I have other Irish lines, but none from this county.
