    2. Richard Callanan
    3. Hi there Heidi and everyone! Yes I intend to be at the Family History show in London on 29th of April. It's fun to attend but be warned it is not very "useful". It is quite a large event with maybe about 250 stands. Most are amateur or semi-professional societies from various geographical areas in UK, usually based on counties. There are a few Irish stalls. I expect Eneclann to be there. Maybe also the London based "Irish Genealogical Research Society" [if they will get off their aristocratic arses and prove they are still alive but I doubt it!] Ancestry.com usually have a large stand with a lot of advisers. The other major London sources, Public Record Office, National Archives, etc. should all have stands. Contact me nearer the time and we can fix a stall, and a time, to meet at. The previous day also has eight introductory talks at the same venue. Fri 28 11:00-17:00 A Taste of Family History. Four from eight introductory talks at the Royal Horticultural Hall, SW1. Ticket £15 includes free entry to the Show on Saturday more(pdf) Details of what the lectures are about don't seem to be available yet but should eventually appear on the "Society of Genealogy" website http://www.sog.org.uk (you will have to navigate into their events page and click for more info. http://www.sog.org.uk/events/calendar.html#footnote Richard Callanan London England -----Original Message----- From: Iamhydee@aol.com [mailto:Iamhydee@aol.com] Sent: 31 January 2006 18:48 To: IRL-TIPPERARY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [TIP] Re: The Family History Show" Hi, listers, I'm so excited because I think I'll be attending "The Family History Show" in London on 29, April, 2006. 3. I did something very similar and had success. I wrote an advance letter to the parish priest and he was waiting for my visit when I arrived. He didn't allow me to go over the records myself, but instead held the parish register and read over it looking for the names I wanted. That was in 1991 which I believe was before the records were made unavailable, but it sounds like Cindy had a more recent experience. It's worth a try. I've had very good luck with an advance letter to the parish priest explaining my interests and asking if I could access the registers myself when there. When I've been able to show that anyone with the surname is likely to have been part of the family, they've even allowed me to peruse the entire register looking for instances of the name amongst sponsors and the likes. It's time consuming, and I do give a generous donation, but it's probably less than what you'd be paying to the centers. 3. Tom, There is a Bowles branch in Solohead in the 1850's as a Bridget Bowles married Michael Quillinan there in 1851; a witness to the marriage was John Bowles. They had 6 children in Solohead and I think another daughter in Limerick. Baptism sponsors included John Bowles, Honora Bowles, William Bowles and Catherine Bowles. 3. I have had some success in finding my family by going directly to the local church by contacting the parish priest far in advance and they would make the actual baptismal and marriage records available. Of course you need to know which church and which names. It would help immensely if you know approximate dates. And then everything is written in Latin, but if you do a little research before, that is not insurmountable. The last names are not in Latin, nor the townland if it is written. I would always make a donation to the church after. Sandy There is no other way to access any of the Tipperary Catholic records?

    2. Patricia Dwyer
    3. HI Janet, I wish I could be there, but second best, I wish I could get some kind of report on the proceedings. My ancestor is James Dwyer, reportedly born in Holycross parish July 12, 1818. (Per headstone for date and notes made by a priest for place). Tipperary Family History Research cannot find a record of his baptism or that of any of his siblings. The priest's notes indicate his parents were John Dwyer and Margaret (or Mary?) Fogarty. I believe that James and brothers Timothy, Thomas and maybe Martin immigrated around 1851-1852, possibly through New Orleans, and settled in Greene County, Ohio. Thomas died young and unmarried, I've found no trace of martin except the naturalization papers James and Timothy had large families. They also had sisters Honorah and Margaret, one of who may have married a Daly and moved to Missouri...again from the priest's notes, which were hard to decipher! I found a brother Malachi who settled in Australia. Records there show Malachi with same parents and originating from Golden, another Tipp. parish. An old family legend has it that the family was split up after having trouble at sea when rescuing ships took some passengers to new Orleans and others to Australia. I have letters written by Malachi's descendants to James's son Frank. James married Anna (aka Nancy) Waters Timothy married Bridget Kavanaugh Do you know who is running the Dwyer DNA project? Is there any place to find out more about the O'Dwyer clan organization? I'll be away from the computer for a few days, look forward to news when I get back! 3. My Bowles in South Tipperary developed in two seperate Catholic and Church of Ireland branches but still moved from place to place together from the mid 1700's to the early 1800's and then both emigrated to Canada. I have had quite a lot of success accessing the surviving Church of Ireland records for Tipperary at the representative Church Body Library in Dublin, some at the National Archives, several local church offices have done free lookups from their local copies or indexes of registers and the church in Clonmel has all their records for the surrounding parish computerized and provides a complete single surname report for 40 euros. Having had a look at the Tipperary Family History Research Center site it appears that there is only one option for me to now branch into the Catholic arm of my Bowles family which I have found traces of in Gortnahoe, Fethard and Killenaule (the Tipperary center), Clonmel and Cahir (the Waterford Centre) and at Silvermines (the Nenagh Centre) and that would be by paying a total of 180 euros to those three centres. I plan to travel to Ireland in August to do the in-person research which I have not been able to do from here except through a paid researcher, but even being there the only way will still be to pay the 180 euros. Apparently their reports will also not be complete surname reports which may help me discover new family lines but only the direct line for the ancestors which I request. Is that correct? There is no other way to access any of the Tipperary Catholic records?

    3. Jerry Lucky you to have such early dates. I'm also searching Cahir Parish for my O'BRIEN line, trying to find the baptism of Cunningham Porter O'BRIEN c1794 (he died 1842 aged 48) or the marriage of his parents who are unknown. His first child Jonathan Porter O'BRIEN was baptised at St Paul's in 1825. Could you please tell where you found the record of the early marriage of Ellen English to David Gorman and the marriage of Honora Gorman to Richard Tobin in 1783? There may be hope yet. We have taken it to be Killenaule. Her parents were Mary NAIL/NEIL and Patrick BRYAN and she was born c.1857. Ann was a Roman Catholic. Any comments, ideas or connections most welcome.
