Hi Jude: I also find it interesting there are 2 Quinns sponsors for Carroll children. Are there any Kennedys in your family. I also found 5 Kennedys were sponsors for Carroll children. The dates do seem right that your Anthony Carroll could be a brother to my Patrick Carroll. since one of Patricks children was named Anthony also. Mary Quinn was a sponsor for one of Patricks children. It is possible that your John and my Anthony could be 1st cousins. Anthony is a name that has been passed down in our family.I have not been able to find for sure any of Patricks siblings except from baptismal sponsor , John Carroll whom I am assuming would be a brother to Patrick. Wished we could find a connection, but think we need to do more research to prove it. Lets keep in touch. Thanks, Carol
From the Tipperary Message Board: Subject: Hogan Family Email: jlperry_jones@yahoo.com Message: Hello all. I am getting ready for my birthday trip to Ireland this summer and I'm hoping to visit the town my great.....grandmother came from. By the info I have it was "Nailan" (may just be phonetic spelling) in Co. Tipperary. Her name was Bridget Hogan (born-1831-33) parents were John & Mary Hogan. As far as I know she was Catholic and most likely baptized. If you have any information regarding the town or family I would greatly appreciate it. Or just a point in the right direction. Thanks and have a great day. To reply - please visit the forum: http://pub14.bravenet.com/forum/1200795777

You are lucky Mike, here in Down Under land I still can't get on from very early this morning and it's now 5.15pm. How bout sharing the address you have. Regards Cheryle ----- Original Message ----- From: Michael McGraw To: IRL-TIPPERARY-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, February 11, 2006 5:01 PM Subject: RE: [TIP] Fw: Irish Newspapers on line & free at present for early users I logged onto the site early this morning right after reading about it in the first e-mail. I was required to register and was given 10 free credits, the value of which I don't fully understand. Since the site is still under construction they are probably letting people use it for "testing" and marketing and at some point in the future there will be charges. It is now about 15 hours since I first signed on and I can still browse through my original search results. There are a few problems that I have noticed. When the search results are displayed you get some gibberish that is produced when the OCR (optical character recognition) software tries to decipher the text in the image. I was a little surprised it found my search word based on how it mangled the others - I also wonder how many it missed. Reading the image is much better and you can adjust the magnification. The image on the screen occupies too small of an area. It is like trying to watch a baseball game through a knothole in the outfield fence. Also, there is a thumbnail size image of the whole page displayed to the right with a purple navigation bar superimposed over it so you can see where you are on the page. This thumbnail and the navigation bar can be toggled off which allows you to see more of the actual enlarged image of the page. Although the search term is on the page somewhere there is no indication as to exactly where on the page it is located and you must search the entire page. If you left click the mouse on the image and hold it down you can move the page around to view a different portion of it which is very nice. The browser "Find in this page..." function doesn't work in connection with these images. There is a selection tool in the small tool bar displayed at the left of the screen. You can select an area of the image in a yellow tinted rectangle but pressing the scissors icon which logically means "cut" gives you another window with an error related to "page not found." If you try to use the browser commands of "Select All" and then "Copy" nothing winds up on the clipboard. If you just try to use the browser "Print" function you just print a blank page with header and footer but no content. If you just want to grab the small snippets that you can see in the tiny window they give you for viewing you need to resort to using the "Print Screen" button the will capture the screen shot on the clipboard. You can then paste it into Microsoft Photo Editor or Photoshop and crop the full screen down to the newspaper image only. Then you can print it, save it or paste it into a word document and try to reassemble the whole article in a most tedious fashion. I went back and played around a little more. Doing a right click on the mouse offers a few more options. These include a zoom in and zoom out function and a print function that will print out at your selected magnification as much of the column length that will fit on a page. Not bad! There does seem to be a bit of a problem getting to align the section printed to the column of interest - but perhaps with a little more practice I will be able to master that function. Of course, once I sign off tonight I might not get back on tomorrow. Some time ago I copied out some Tipperary places from a couple of gazetteers. I wanted to add a little more to these. I left off at DERRY. The ones previously transcribes can be seen at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~irltip2/topo/index.htm These are all from a micofiche of the 1844 Parliamentary Gazetteer of Ireland. The text is a bit blurry in spots and I had trouble copying so a couple of letters were missing on the edge of the page. I have used an underscore (_) where there was a missing letter. ------------------------------------------------ DERRY-CASTLE, a demesne, the property of Mr. Head, on the west border of the barony of Owney and Arra, co. Tipperary, Munster. It occupies a beautiful and prominent situation on the bold banks of the lower reach of Lough Derg, 2 1/4 miles north-north-east of Killaloe. Above it, on the slopes of the hills which screen the lake, are the celebrated slate-quarries, which have been so long in successful operation. DERRYFADDA, one of several denominations of a section of bog, on the mutual border of the counties of Kilkenny and Tipperary, and immediately west of Johnstown and Urlingford, Leinster. The other denominations are Clonsalla, Bawnmore, Inchyrourk, Urlingford, Longford, Keilcattagh, Leigh, Maunselstown, and Keilmakill. The whole section is bounded, on the north by the road from Derryfadda to Bawnmore; on the east, by the road from Urlingford to Littleton; and on the west, by Two-mile Borris, Castletown, and Derryfadda. Area, 5,540 English acres. Highest and lowest points above sea-level, respectively 422 and 364 feet; greatest and average depth, respectively 27 and 18 feet. Pop., in 1831, 1,286; in 1841, 1,329 (?). Houses 204. The land is for the most part good. The road from Clonmel to Cahir passes through the interior. The _ats are Garryroe, Markhamstown, and part of the demesne of Woodroofe, the last the well-wooded property of William Perry, Esq. Thanks, Mike, I thought it was just me -- couldn't figure out how to search a page for a key term once I'd accessed the page -- guess that's not possible to do at this point. Fortunately, the one potential ancestor I was looking for was only mentioned on one page. It took awhile to locate his name, but well worth the time as I found more military information about him. Cheryle, I just clicked on the URL given in the e-mail yesterday morning shown below. The newspaper archive is up and running at www.irishnewspaperarchives.com I have already logged off and I just clicked on the above URL and I get the screen that says "Irish Newspaper Archive" and then it just hangs there. So now I am back on the outside like everyone else. This is typical of new sites. When they are first announced they get overwhelmed and then they take them off line for awhile to fix glitches and improves efficiency so that they can handle all the hits. We were warned it was under construction and this will probably happen for a while. I'll try again tomorrow. Best Regards, Mike McGraw Austin, TX -----Original Message----- From: Cheryle Judge [mailto:cjudge@westnet.com.au] Sent: Saturday, February 11, 2006 1:17 AM To: IRL-TIPPERARY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TIP] Fw: Irish Newspapers on line & free at present for early users You are lucky Mike, here in Down Under land I still can't get on from very early this morning and it's now 5.15pm. I logged onto the site early this morning right after reading about it in the first e-mail. What state were they in Lesley? (Geographically that is!) Have you tried the shipping lists for Victorian shipping? Try http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=24 There's a Benjamin on the 'Salsette' in 1841 but his father is also Benjamin and there's no Michael, Ellen or John. When I type in Robertson (which would have been a perfectly natural error on the part of the recorder) there's a Benjamin and a John on the Duke of Richmond in 1853, aged 34 and 36. Also Catherine 33 and Sarah 25. Good luck.
