Hello Karen Thank you for your interest and very kind offer. I do envy you your planned trip to Tipperary. I did find a huge amount of data about the Mansergh family on a "The Bomfords of Rahinstown" webpage but cannot get it up again. - this is a little "Maria was born at 3.45 pm on 24 April 1828 at Cheltenham. The sponsors at her baptism were Richard Bolton, Rosetta's brother-in-law (probably the one of Bective Abbey because the other one had not yet married into the family); Mrs. Bomford Rosetta's mother Maria who was at that time living at Cheltenham and so, no doubt, it was at her house that Maria Annette was born; and Lady Hesketh of Rufford Hall, Lancashire, Rosetta's sister Annette Maria after whom the baby was named. Maria was married at Tipperary on 26 September 1865 to Joseph Edmund Koostra Nadin was born in 1826 and was a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1850. " As I a writing a book on my Nadin family any information is just great. Joseph was the grandson of Joseph Nadin, Deputy Constable of Manchester who was notorious for his role in the Peterloo Massacre. Not too hard after 1864 as the county Registrar has the records usually. Some people didn't register, however. C of I marriages will be found in Cashel at the church. For RC marriages one has to use TFHR in Tipp Town before 1864. Hello Listers I am new to the List and live in NSW Australia. I am researching the Nadin family, and Joseph Edmund Koostra Nadin, born Abt. 1826 Manchester, went to Ireland as a doctor. He had married to Emma Margaret Mitchell 1851 Manchester, but she evidently died as be married Maria Annette Mansergh 26 Sep 1865, Tipperary. He was in practice (1889 Bassett's Directory of Tipperary) Dr J E K Nadin Physicians Michael St Tipperary. There were children from the first marriage, and I think one of them may be of death of Emma Catherine Nadin, died 8 Sep 1865 Tipperary Town. There were children from the second marriage but have no details. Both Joseph and Maria died 1900, and are buried in the Churchyard Tipperary. Can anyone help me find out what happened to this family please. Kind regards Joanne Wyee NSW Aust

Hello Joanne, I am travelling to Tipperary in early May and we have rented a self-catering "villa" on the Mansergh Estate at Greenane, near Tipperary town. I have been corresponding with the owner's who still are Mansergh descendants and their estate is one of the few still owned by the same family after many hundred years. I do know they are interested in genealogy as I have passed on some bits regarding their family that I found while researching mine. They also mentioned they have many Burke's books and etc. at their home and that we are welcome to go through them when we are there. If you can wait until May I will find out what I can while we are there. I can also e-mail the family and asked if the name is familiar. They're putting our rent up soon, so we have to go hunting for a new place to live. So I will be unsubscribing, perhaps for a few months. Thanks to all listers who have made such interesting conversations and posed some wonderful questions and answers. For anyone who may have need to contact me, I should be available on this address, except for the time we are actually moving ("when" we actually find somewhere *cheap* to live!) Hi Listers, I have an ancestor David SMITH who died in Ennis Town, County Clare in 1878. His obituary in the newspaper lists many who attended his funeral. Two people who interest me are Henry TULLOCH/TULLOCK who is named as the step-father of David SMITH and John MCNAY who is named as the uncle of David SMITH. After searching in some directories I have found the following. As David SMITH was also a Grocer and Spirit and Wine Dealer in Ennis Town, I think it is very likely these are the relations. Also David SMITH was originally in partnership as a Wine and Spirit Dealer with a James MACNAY IN 1856 Ennis Town, County Clare. 1856 - Slater's Directory of Ireland - Tipperary Section MACNEY John 49 West Main St Grocer MACNEY John 49 West Main St Spirit & Wine Dealer 1867 Henry & Coghlan's General Directory of Cork & Munster Grocers & Spirit Dealers TULLOCH Henry - Main Street, Tipperary 1881 - Slater's Commercial Dirctory of Ireland Grocers & Spirit Dealers TULLOCH Henry - 49 West Main Street, Tipperary Is anyone else looking at these names or have any further information on these people? I believe that I have tracked my g-g-grandfather, Matthew Savage Todd, to Rossacrow in the parish of Donohill. I know he was a schoolteacher and Griffiths shows Matthew Todd living next to the school in Rossacrow so it seems to be a good match. Griffiths also shows Thomas Todd living in the nearby townland of Clashnacrony. The children of Matthew Todd (Frederick, Sophia, Robert) born (1844, 1851, 1857) all moved to England but, so far as I know, Matthew stayed in Ireland. Just wondered if this rings any bells with anyone on the list. Andrew Patterson Buckinghamshire, UK
Jude, I was referring to the pronunciation of the name "Aodh", which is the Gaelic for the name "Hugh". However, you are right. The name "Hugh" is pronounced "Hew" in Munster and "Kew" in Ulster. -----Original Message----- From: JFW [mailto:jowyn@adelphia.net] Sent: 04 February 2006 19:54 To: IRL-TIPPERARY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TIP] Hugh - Irish name variations How interesting! I have often wondered about this name. It is in my family -- both Ulster and Munster. In Ulster, I hear it pronounced like "Kew" or "Hew" and have never heard the "i" as in "see" pronunciation. Wherever did the "ew" sound come from? Anglicization, I suppose. And how in the world did the "k" sound arise? (McHugh??) "Hew" is the pronunciation used by my ggrandfather (Hugh from Munster), according to the family. After reading everyone's Carroll queries and assuming I had no Carrolls in the family suddenly I stumble across 2 Carroll families that seem to be connected. Now I need some help. 1) Mary Perry, widow of Clonmel married John CARROL of Clonmel & Cahir at St. Paul's, Cahir in 1826. Her maiden name appears to be Hackett and she married her 1st husband John Perry Esq. of Newcastle in 1806. 2) Florence CARROLL of Littlefield, who I believe married a Moylan. Would anyone have information regarding these people? Thanks, Karen
