    1. RE: Thank you, Pete
    2. Kennedy Mail
    3. Hi Pete, Our group actually has copies of Historical Maps of Ireland and Tipperary History, both good references. I will obtain a copy of An Historical Geography of Ireland. We would be most interested in maps of the Kingdoms and tuatha of the regions (pre1200 to 1600). If you are aware of any publications that descibe such maps or even pronounced descriptions of those areas please do forward them. It would be interesting to piece them together. Irish history is so amazingly torn and refused together that an accurate picture is sometimes lost. With the help of our members, we will reconstruct our knowledge base. Thank you for your help. Be well in Massachusetts! 1. Griffith's Valuation - Missing Surnames
    2. Phil Buckley
    3. Hi John, I only know that the A through L surnames are missing in the FTM CD of Griffith's Valuation (I think the M surnames are actually there) and on websites that took their data from the FTM CD. I would recommend that you use the actual Griffith's Valuation available on microfilm from the FHL, or subscribe to one of the websites offering scanned IMAGES of the actual GV. I know of no Index to the surnames of GV that contains the surnames A through L which are missing in some of the parishes of Co. Tipperary, but that doesn't mean that there aren't any. If you find an index. just check it to see if surnames common to these parishes are present in the index. For example, check Dwyer, Butler, Buckley, Crowe. There are plenty of these surnames in the actual GV for parishes such as Toem. Regards, Phil Buckley

    2. David at kennedy_mailing_lists@hotmail.com writes: > There is a group of researchers in search of maps of the North Tipperary and Offaly region(s) from the different eras of Irish history. < David, You used the word "ancient" in your subject line. I am unsure what you would mean by that, but I'd certainly guess that you mean prior to 1254, which was about the date that Limerick and Tipperary were shired from the large shire of Munster. Offaly wasn't separated - from Meath - and bounded until 1556. And back before then, you're going to get only rough maps of kingdoms, tuatha, etc. Nothing worth calling a map (much less calling it "Tipperary" or "Offaly"). By the time of the Down Survey (1654, or so, as I recall) maps were made of various baronies in Ireland - which often corresponded to county borders. These maps are included at the back of the collected Ordnance Survey letters of the two counties - Offaly in 1839, Tipperary in 1840. If you look at these barony maps, you'll see just how "imprecise" they are (I was looking for just the right word - but the maps resemble my 8-year old greatgranddaughter's work <gr>). I don't have any indications that there were border changes in either Tipp or Offaly since the time of the Ordnance Survey in the 1840-ish period. But I'd be pleased to be informed of any info to the contrary <gr>. Hhere are a few books which might be of some use: Tipperary: History and Society, from Geography Publications, William Nolan, editor - may be of some use to you. An Historical Geography of Ireland, from Academic Press, Graham and Proudfoot, editors Historical Maps of Ireland, from Chartwell Books, by Michael Swift, has a 1759 map of Ireland which might be useful when enlarged enough. And, of course, the Down maps in the OS letters for the counties. I think that's about all I have. .............................................................................. ... If anyone is familiar with or knows of someone in-the-know, I'd like to make contact with this school prior to an upcoming visit. The school is in the area of Ballyporeen. Please reply off List so not to burden the "in" baskets of the others. 2. Kennedy Mail
    3. Hello all, There is a group of researchers in search of maps of the North Tipperary and Offaly region(s) from the different eras of Irish history. The idea is to learn more about the evolution of the modern counties and how/when the boundaries of said counties were setup and how many times there might have been major changes in boundary line. If anyone has any ides of who might be contacted that would know this kind of info please forward any recommendations or suggestions. Is there a county survey office for the countys of Ireland? Anyone? Have a great day! Be well all... David _________________________________________________________________ Is your PC infected? Tipperary Ireland close to a cross roads called Poulmucca. Poulmucka comes from the geelic meaning "Pigs' Hole". Legend has it that the origins of the name is as follows: From a mersh adjacent to my family farm a little stream flowed for about a half mile where it went undergouund. A piglet is said to have entered the hole with the stream and reappeared where the udder gound stream joined the river suir at Cahir some six miles away - hense the name Poulmucca which translates to "Pigs Hole". Poulmucca name is now associated with a nearby cross road with a pub and some houses. Tim Enright.

    3. Hello List I am seeking information on James MALONEY, he was born 1821 in Cashel, Tipperary, Ireland 1821. James married Ellen WALL born 20 Dec 1827 and died 16 Feb 1918. She was the daughter of Michael WALL and Alice BARRETT both of Ireland. They immigrated abt. 1849 and settled in Dover, Randolph, N.J. Children of James and Ellen are William, Michael, John, James, Mary, Thomas Henry, Edward, Anna, Bridget and Richard. Thomas Henry was my g-grandfather. According to the 1900 census, Ellen and James had 13 children however I only know of 10. At the time of the 1900 census only 8 were still living. Thanks - Barb in AZ

    3. Greetings to all, Just used TFHR.to research these names. While they confirmed what I already knew there was nothing new. My ancestors are named in Annacarty by Griffiths, and 1901/1911 Census. Stated place of birth for both Gt. G.P.was Co. Tipperary. Could this indicate North Tipperary as an area of search for pre-1864? Both names have been found in Directories etc. prior to known dates in Thurles and surrounds also in Ardfinnan and Waterford . The names were also mentioned as Constables in court reports. Any ideas for breaching this brick wall are welcome. Best regards. Kath kathb@xtra.co.nz 2006-03-18

    3. Hello List, I wonder if someone who knows the Tipperary area about 40 miles around Cashel could give me some pointers on how to find my ancestors farms and graveyards where they are buried? I will be staying at a self-catering cottage 2 miles from Tipperary town and will need to travel to New Birmingham and Kilcooly Abbey and New Park townland or a small place called 'The Commons' looking for family of 'Switzers' who farmed there before 1831. I am a senior and absolutely will not rent a car. Also I need to search for the ancestral Cowin/Cowan land SE of Cashel near Rosegreen and any Church of Ireland graveyards in the area. My questions are these: 1- How easy is it to travel by bus to these places..would there only one bus a day travelling to New Birmingham or Littleton and would the bus even go to somewhere small like the Commons? Likewise to Rosegreen? 2-Is there any other way to find the land my ancestors farmed or would that info have to be found at the Land Registry office in Dublin? 3- Is there anyway to do an on-line search for old Church of Ireland graveyards in the vicinity of Rosegreen? Please contact me privately with any and all suggestions you folks might have. Thank you so much for your time and ideas. Gladys in Alberta gladsl@xplornet.com
