I have another question for the experts out there regarding how doweries worked back in the 1700s. If you were a father and had money you would pay a Dowery (or Dower) when your daughter married. A marriage settlement would be drawn up and lands and / or monies would be given to the groom and family as a dowery. 1) What happened if the husband died before children were born? Would the widow be sent home to her parents or allowed to stay on her husband's lands? 2) If the husband died sometime later, after children were born, and the widow remarried would a Dowery be paid for the 2nd marriage? If so would the widow have to pay this herself by selling some of her late husband's lands or would her father, or if he was dead a brother, be expected to pay for the 2nd marriage? Thanks, Karen

Estelle, I found Killenaule to be much smaller than I had expected, only a small town really and there is nothing terribly built up in the area going towards Ballynonty. Lots of hedgerows, stone walls, a graveyard or two, the occasional old house and some newer bungalows between the usual fields. The Gas station the Perrys own is a Maxol Station in Ballynonty itself which is just a mid-sized village. I have a portion of map I can scan and send to you which shows the area. I'll send it this evening when I have some more time. Karen

I think Peter is correct as I recently spent some time in Ballynonty visiting Perry relatives who have a gas station there and they had mentioned "Ballynunty" also as "Four Roads" or "Four Cross Roads". It is very close to Killenaule. I know Maher might be a common name in County Tipperary but I have a strong suspicion that there could be a connection between this Michael Maher - and perhaps the 'Mr Murphy' mentioned in the Gazette - and a manslaughter case involving John Breen reported in the Clonmel Advertiser on 19 July 1836. John Breen (convict) came from Clonoulty and a Johanna Maher (born 1833 in the Towland of Brittas, Co Tipperary, to Timothy Maher and Mary Grace) later married a Denis Breen from the Townland of Clogher (baptised Clonoulty 7 Sep 1834) in Co. The last mentioned journal states, that on Monday morning last , at so public an hour as 9 O'Clock, 13 men, well armed with long guns, proceeded through the County, to Milltown, to a farm belonging to Mr. Doherty, where they left a threatening notice and inflicted personal abuse on the caretaker named Devane, ordering him to give up his situation and holding. As they were seen going in the direction of Mr. Murphys, of Woodford, about 60 of his tenantry collected, and supposing that the armed men were going to attack the owner, offered their assistance to repel them, and if Mr. Murphy would assist, to attack and secure the 13. This Mr.Murphy (having but one gun in his house) prudentially declined, and the party passed in peace. They were subsequently observed and pursued by Captain Long (magistrate) assisted by the Rev.
