Marion at marionclare@shaw.ca writes: > Does anyone know which of these birth details would be the nearest location to Templemore please? I presume in those days people didn't move around too much. < Marion, I think that Moankeenane townland, in Glenkeen civil parish, might be your nearest reference. It is located about 7 miles WSW of Templemore town. I cannot find a Gannavane (or even substituting,"r"s for "n"s, etc.) anywhere near any of the Tipp. Kilcommons. One Kilcommon is about 15 miles WSW of Templemore, in Templebeg civil parish and another is in Aglishcloghane civil parish, more than 20 miles NW of Templemore. The other Kilcommon townlands, along with Ardfinnan, are in S. Tipperary and well-away from Templemore. It appears that Moankeenane is in Borrisoleigh RC parish (Diocese of Cashel and Emly, which I understand is a problem). The web page for this parish, with contact information, is at: > http://www.catholicireland.net/parishes/parishdetails.php?ID=831 < The second listing in the parish, for Aleigh, is shown as Ileigh on the maps..... and it's certainly not in Co. Hi Joanne, Thank you very much for your help. I have already searched the Chaplin's reports and the marriage is not listed. I have been told that these lists are only for couples who actually were married by the army Chaplin. In my case I think the marriage of the soldier was to a local girl so it took place in her church and therefore not on the army records. I have all the available records from the regiment for John Johnston and it shows no marriage. Also the two children that they had in Ireland are also not listed on the chaplains' records although mentions a wife and children. Their second child, my g.grandmother was born whilst the regiment was in Waterford and she was baptised in the RC Holy Trinity Without church at Ballybricken but listed that the couple were living at the barracks. So now I have the long and hard task of finding the correct church. Not an easy thing to do. I presume if I can find the baptism of the mother, then all may fall into place. Hey ho. Must think of another tactic. But I appreciate your help and suggestions. Thanks again Marion -----Original Message----- From: Joanne McLean [mailto:jcmclean@sprint.ca] Sent: June 20, 2006 3:57 PM To: IRL-TIPPERARY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TIP] Mary CONNORS b. 1825/8 Hi Marion, If you have no success on the list, another route you might go is the registrations of army marriage registrations. I am searching for a Mary CONNORS born 1825/8. She married a John JOHNSTON who was a British soldier at the barracks at Templemore from Oct. 1848 - April 1850. I know Mary CONNORS was catholic. Their first child Ann JOHNSTON was born 1849 so they probably married late 1848. I am looking for the marriage details and it is likely that would be the same church as she was baptised. Does anyone know which of these birth details would be the nearest location to Templemore please? I presume in those days people didn't move around too much. I have found several births which would fit. Box 5393 Cochituate, MA 01778 www.massgencouncil.org ALERT ALERT ALERT MGC urges all genealogists who care about access to vital records to act now! Legislative bills (H-3642, H-3643, and H-3644, petitioned by Plymouth Rep. Thomas J. O’Brien, et al.), currently pending in the Massachusetts House Ways and Means Committee, are being pushed for passage within two weeks. They will close public records that have been open for nearly 400 years as well as the indexes to them. We all must contact our Massachusetts state Representatives and Senators to oppose these three (O’Brien) bills for the following reasons: The bills call for restricting access to all birth records since 1915 and all marriage and death records since 1955. These records are currently open public records and are the entry point for genealogical and medical history research. Restricting public access to the indexes of these records is unprecedented. It will deny use by all non-governmental individuals: researchers in genealogy, medical history, probate heirs, banks, journalists, and historians. Contact should be made immediately. We stopped these bills in 2003 – but now support for them in the legislature is formidable. If YOU don’t speak now, these bills will change the face of genealogy in Massachusetts and beyond. MOST EFFECTIVE: a signed letter with your reasons for opposing these closures, using your own words. To view a sample letter for your legislators, click here http://home.comcast.net/~massgencouncil/ConstituentLetter.htm ALSO: telephone calls, face to face meetings, and e-mails. Wayne, have you tried the Message Boards and Mailing Lists for the Hodgins name? The Lists don't seem to have very many inquiries, but the Boards have a lot of postings, with email addresses included, regarding that name. I am continuing to search for any info on my ggrandparents in Tipperary. Robert Hodgins was born about 1814 in or near Cloughjorden. Jane Holmes was born about 1820. They were married and then immigrated to Canada where they settled in Wallace township Perth County Ontario. I would appreciate if someone could send me e-mail addresses for a few Hodgins in order for me to contact them. Thanks so much. Wayne Winters
Have you ever wanted to see what a place or family member looks like. I have found the searchengine great for finding photos and pictures on the web. http://eu.ixquick.com When in this site select pictures and enter what you are looking for. There are great results for the zulu war and Boer War. Also for places such as Grahamstown, Kilkenny, Tipperary and port elizabeth. If you want to see old pictures try the place name and put "postcards" afterwards and this eliminates peoples personal photos. If a photo interests you click on it and it will then show you the link where the photo is on the web and allows you to increase its size to its original size. I have been really pleased at the pictures I have been able to look at this way. Kind Regards, Rowena
They may never have married, or maybe if he had a wife he left, they couldn't marry. Janet On 6/14/06, Juliegydglais@aol.com <Juliegydglais@aol.com> wrote: > > Hi > Janet. > Thanks for that. Julie, I can think of 3 reasons why Matthew might be with the grandparents: 1. Edward is married to his first wife and living somewhere else but Matthew is staying [the night?/the week?] at his grandmother's. 2. Edward is widowed and working somewhere else and his son is put with his grandparents. 3. Matthew is illegitimate and Edward has accepted responsibilty. In this case he may well have been baptised under the woman's surname and may have a different Christian name. Remember also that not everyone always registered their children's birth's but sometimes just had them baptised with the church. I would write to the local parish priest and ask if Edward was the father of ANY children at the time you think Matthew was born. Hi Janet. Thanks for that. It is about the only thing left to do. I also applied for the marraige cert for Edward and Hannah between 1901 and 1906 , but the gro couldn't find that either. Julie
I was wondering if anyone could help with this problem I have applied numerous times for a birth cert to the Gro, they have been unable to find it. According to the 1901 and 1911 census Matthew Neill age 4 months g son to the head of household which is my gg grandmother on the 1911 census he is named as son to Edward Neill aged 10 by this time my gg grandmother had died and my g grandmother is his wife, there was no sign of Edward on the 1901 census at this address. It states on the 1911 census they have been married 6 years with 2 live children. The gro have no record of a birth of Matthew between 1895 and 1905, I know the last 2 children belong to Edward and Hannah, but I want to try and find out why he was on the 1901 as grandson. Any advise would be great or if anyone is going to the growould they be able to look up the index to see if they can find Matthew born 1901 anywhere in Ireland. Thanks Julie
