    1. [IRL-TIP] Baptismal names
    2. Maggie Heffernan
    3. Depending on the time frame, many baptism records were written in Latin, maybe Ant Ante have been abbreviated from Antonius (male) or Antonia or Antoinette (female). One site I have looked at for medieval given names has Artt but meanings have not been included. There are many sites for given Irish names as well as surnames. Worth a Look > http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/tangwystyl/irish100/ Maggie Heffernan in Port Macquarie NSW AUS clear, cold with a very low wind chill factor. Not the night to be sleeping under a 2 bar fence (as my Dad used to proclaim)

    2. Clare Tuohy
    3. Thanks to everybody for your replies. Terry I have come across these names in RC parish records mainly in Tipperary. And as I said at times I find it difficult to decide if male or female. Just posting a few examples so you can see what the difficulty is. 5 April 1835 Anto? of James Doyle and Bridget Gleeson Sprs Willm Tuohy Mary Byrne Grange (Not sure if this is male or female) 1 July 1835 Bridget of Patrick Fanning and Judy Maher John Ryan and Anto Maher (would expect this to be female) 6 Mar 1837 Anty of James Purcel and Bridget Doyle (assume female) 24 Dec 1867 Robert of Robert Stakelum and Anto Ryan (B. Howe = Townland) Sprs Timothey Stakelum and Ellen Stakelum (from this looks like Anto is female) May 1 1870 William of Terence Gorman and Catherine Callanan Glenreigh Sprs David Meara and Anto Gleeson (not sure) [Terence Gorman and Catherine Callanan were my ggrandparents.] 16 Mar 1875 Anto of Terence Gorman Catherine Callanan Glanreigh Sprs John Kennedy Bridget Broderick (male or female??) Just checked the last one on the civil registration index. The entry shows the same forename and have just realised that if I get a copy of the cert I will get the answer. 2. Christina Finn Hunt
    3. We have added more lists of Protestant Orphans to the IGP Archives page for Tipperary. Also Petty Jurors for Kilnemanagh North & South. These were contributed by Clare Tuohy. When I have a moment, I have also started going back and pulling the obits out of the posts from Mary Heaphy taken from the Nenagh Guardian. To view these go to: http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ Click on TIPPERARY and Miscellaneous for the Orphans and Jurors. Click on Obits for the Obituaries. You can contribute your ancestors obit even if it is from a non Irish newspaper IF it names at least the county in Ireland. http://www.genrecords.org/irfiles/ (submit here) Regards and Happy 4th of July (US) and Happy Canada Day (belated) Christina

    3. Anastasia was often shortened to the informal Stacia. Anastatia would be another spelling but likely using same informal name. Always look for every possible spelling, use of middle names instead, and nicknames. Challenges keep the mind sharp, Maureen

    3. Hi Clare. I can't help you out on your question but I wondered just what type of 'forms' you're finding this on, and in what context. Is it where a given name (forename) should be? I've done a lot of census (US) transcribing, but have never come across something like this. I've seen many male names shortened...Tho & Thos for Thomas; Geo for George; and Jas for James are most prevalent, but I've never come across a shortened form of a female name. Are these all Irish forms where this occurs? It's quite interesting. 3. I thought I would join the Heffernan chase... I am looking for information about the family of a Kathleen Heffernan in Tipperary, possibly Thurles. Apart from the fact that my father once took his family on a search for Heffernans in the area (info from a sister who was a teenager at the time and not listening all that carefully), the only details I have are from a cousin who remembers her 'mother telling me that we were descended from five generations of Irish school-teachers, four of them called Catherine/Kathleen. The furthest name she gave me was Kathleen Heffernan, a teacher in County Tipperary. After that (I think) came Katherine Hall (who was presumably a teacher too), then Catherine Burke, then grandmother, then mother herself [who wasn't called either Catherine or Kathleen]'. As to date, Catherine Burke was born c1841/43, probably in Co Tipperary, and her father was called Richard. Both she and her daughter were indeed school teachers despite and throughout raising large families. The family remained, as far as I know, in Ireland throughout the 19th century. Any help/ suggestions would be much appreciated.
