I'm a "happy camper" today because I took a chance and got a death certificate from one of the microfilms that the LDS (the Mormon Church) has - for a person who died in 1864 - and, guess what? The name of the informant has a different surname and it says he was a cousin of the deceased. How's that! Also says he was married - and that he died in "BallyCormack (or BallyGormack) House" of general debility for two weeks. I found the certificate by going to Familysearch, and looking for Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958 and from there to the year 1864 for the actual entry. Thank goodness, I knew which page number I wanted. It was page 594. Anyway, now to figure out about that Bally *ormack and where and what that was. Heidi
Thank you Wendy I can do that Laraine >
James Ryan's book is available at the GSV bookshop in Melbourne (Genealogical Society of Victoria). You can buy online. It's not cheap. I've also seen a couple of copies on Ebay. www.gsv.org.au and click on bookshop Cheers Beryl Beryl O'Gorman Greensborough Vic Australia
Thank you for the link to that wonderful site. I've been checking it out and looking up the other townlands where my family lived. Also check for used book sites on-line. You'd be amazed at some of the prices from sellers and although they sometimes are not in "new" condition, they are fine. I buy used books a lot. Mary Anne
Mary asks about: === Foilinefingoe - in Upper Turraheen, Clogher Civil Parish? My Ryans lived there. === Mary, Adding to Jerry's information on Bahagha and Glengar, I believe that Foilinefingoe is the area in the NW part of Turraheen Upper townland which is shown on Discovery map 66 as Falleennafinoga. Based on information in Tom Burnell's (a Tipp author - from Holy Cross) fine book, "The Anglicized words of Irish Placenames", this placename would seem to mean "little cliff of the scald crow". I don't know about crows in that area, but the topography shows very steep gradients in this part of Turraheen Upper, so I woudn't be surprised to find several "little cliffs" there. Re(Laraine Dillon "Would anyone know when James Ryan's book can be obtained in Australia please." Laraine, A few years ago I found the book in the reference section of my local public library in Bunbury, Western Australia. If you have a reasonable size town library nearby, they might have it. Does anyone know the meaning of Bahagha, Doon Civil Parish and how to pronounce it? My Roche family lived there in the mid 1800s. What about Glengar? and Foilinefingoe - in Upper Turraheen, Clogher Civil Parish? My Ryans lived there. Thanks for any help. Mary
Seo duit tús an fhreagra, a Mháire / Here's the beginning of the answer, Mary: http://www.logainm.ie/Viewer.aspx?text=Bahagha&streets=no In Modern Irish, beathach means 'lively'. But "Na Beathacha" has me stumped. ?The Lively Places? Here's the answer on Glengar: http://www.logainm.ie/Viewer.aspx?text=Glengar&streets=no Gleann Gearr = The Short Glen, i.e., the Short Valley. I couldn't find Foilinefingoe but www.logainm.ie is a great place for this kind of information. Go raibh sé sin cabhrach. / Hope that's helpful. Pat, thanks LOTS! I will keep this list with my research information. Jan
Hello Listers I am hoping that someone out there may be able to tell me if I have any chances of knocking some bricks out of this wall. I am researching Matthew HICKEY who would have married Margaret BRADY around 1810. They had three sons James born about 1812, Patrick about 1817 and John ...no information. Patrick arrived in Australia on the ROYAL SAXON in 1841 and informs that he is from Tipperary. James arrived in Australia with wife and children on the ADELAIDE in 1845 and informs that he is from Meath. I can't find this family in Meath. That is it... as I can't find any passenger lists with Matthew Hickey, wife Margaret Hickey and son John. However... I do have a death certificate for Margaret Hickey 1873 and it records her as being in Victoria for 28 years so that would her have her arriving about 1845; this is the same time as her son James and family came out and I would have thought that she may have been on the same ship to help with the children etc. However there is no sign of her on the passenger list for the ADELAIDE. As for Matthew Hickey I am wondering if he died prior to 1845 or maybe he just stayed behind. I am guessing that I should try and find out the marriage of Matthew Hickey and Margaret Brady. Is there some kind wise researcher out there who could give me a leg up on this one or shall I take off the saddle!! Yours in hope Jenny in Australia

Hi . Those people who love a little bit of trivia . In Ireland Banshee means mystery people from another world who live in glens and back gardens Laurie On the corner of Edwards Street and High Street Reservoir North of Melbourne Victoria Australia there is a boutique Ladies dress Shop with a Large Sign Banshee . On asking for the relevance of the sign we were informed , It is an Apache Indian (USA ) word for Wild Woman
Are there any earlier court records for Tipperary? My ancestor, Rody KENNEDY, was convicted there in August 1843. -----Original Message----- From: irl-tipperary-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-tipperary-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Pat Connors Sent: Monday, 15 August 2011 9:31 AM To: irl-tipperary@rootsweb.com; cotipperary@rootsweb.com Subject: [IRL-TIP] Petty Court Records I have just added the index for the Tipperary District of Petty Court Records for the period of April 1, 1855 to July 5, 1855 to the County Tipperary section of my website. So far, I have the years 1851 through July 1855 online. I've just ordered the next film which covers the next few years. What is genealogical about these records is that they show the residence of both the complainant and the defendant that includes both the townland and the civil parish (note spellings of both are transcribed as written in the records and mostly misspelled). -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com IGP County Tipperary website: http://www.igp-web.com/tipperary/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-TIPPERARY-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message Important - This email and any attachments may be confidential. Looking for anyone connected to Thomas Ryan who married Judith Ryan, both families lived on the Bog Road in Newport and were married in Castleconnell, Limerick on 14 June 1864. Witnesses were John Osborne and Mary Ryan. Thank you Bob Ryan ryanblack@cox.net
