The Census of Ireland is not indexed as we have come to expect it to be with the US Census. Each parish consists of Enumeration Districts which are composed of townlands. If you have found your family in Griffith's Valuation, you can go to the same townland to search for the names of the people living on the land in 1901 and 1911. The parish and townland names are usually unchanged. There is an index to Electoral Districts but there is no official index of persons. William G. Masterson published an index and transcribed returns for Achill parish (NLI Ir. 94123m21). Ruth Hakala is transcribing part of Clare. For Mayo, Joseph R. Egan is preparing an index and transcription for Ballysakery parish; Nancy Reeb has transcribed much of Killedan parish; I am indexing heads of Killedan (Kiltimagh), Bohola, and Kilconduff parishes. http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/ has a searchable data base containing information transcribed from the 1901 census of Ireland for Leitrim and Roscommon. As of September 2000, there were over 14,000 individuals from County Mayo in the database. All records for Kilbeagh (Charlestown) civil parish are included as well as Kilmovee civil parish. There are also nine townlands for Killedan civil parish in the database. More records will be added. The data base is under development and is on-line for limited searching with over 2700 individuals from the town of Athlone, Westmeath, included in the database. Military personnel who were part of the British military barrack in Athlone are not included. Anyone wishing to volunteer to work on County Leitrim records should e-mail Roger McDonnell. Fermanagh has been indexed and is for sale on microfiche. I cut and pasted the description: "To find the film containing your townland, use the index to townlands in enumeration districts. Enumeration districts are listed in numerical order, not alphabetical order, so you must scan through the pages to find the townland you want. Townlands are listed in alphabetical order under each district. To the left of each townland name is its census number; at the top of the page is the enumeration district number." It is not an easy task! Ellen "Maureen Hatfield" <maureen02@attbi.com> wrote: >Hi Ellen, I just saw your response below. I have just joined this list and >could I ask you a question?
