    1. Nolan and O'Brien of County Roscommon
    2. Ben Mayberry
    3. This is my first message to this list and am hoping to find more information on my family. My great grandmother, Catharine "Katie/Kate" NOLAN was born about 1861 in County Roscommon,Ireland. When she was about 4 years of age she emigrated with her family to Brooklyn, New York where she married in 1881 and died in 1892. (The family left from County Galway.) Katie is the daughter of Michael NOLAN and Jane O'BRIEN who must have married in Ireland as they had children born there. I estimate they left Ireland after 1864 but before 1867. What I need is to determine either the township or parish of their residence in County Roscommon to begin researching there and any advice, suggestions or helpful hints will be gratefully appreciated. (Death and marriage records and US censuses merely state Ireland as birthplace.) I've included a chart of her family; however, I have found conflicting birthdates on all. Descendants of Michael NOLAN 1. Michael NOLAN (b.1828-,Ireland;d.1893/1907-Brooklyn,NY) sp: Jane O'BRIEN (b.1837/1840-,Ireland;d.21 May 1908-Brooklyn,Kings,New York) 2. Patrick NOLAN (b.1854-Ireland) 2. Thomas F. NOLAN (b.1857-Ireland) 2. Mariah "Mary" NOLAN (b.1856/1862-,Ire;d.12 Oct 1919-Brooklynn,Kings,NY) 2. Katherine "Katy" NOLAN (b.1861-,Roscommon,Ireland;m. 1881 Brooklynn,Kings,NY; d.03 Jan 1892-Brooklyn,King,New York) sp: Johann Hinrich Dietrich WULF "John" 2. 3. I'm new as well; sure hope someone answers the question about Roman Catholic church records in Elphin parish. I looked at the LDS microfiche, 989743 as I remember, but it is very difficult to read and gives very little information. I'm researching PATRICK HIGGINS and ELLEN MCDERMOTT, married 1853, daughter ANNA 1854, daughter CATHERINE (Katie) 1859, son EDWARD 1864, emigrated 1865, daughter MOLLIE born in Red Oak, Montgomery, Iowa but must have moved immediately (not in 1870 Fedeal Census there), then lived in Hamilton, Hancock, Illinois 1880 -1884. Don't know anything about Patrick's Mother, Father, siblings. ELLEN's Father's name was EDWARD MCDERMOTT but don't know where he lived opther than Co Roscommon. Pat pinetreelabs@earthlink.net

    3. I'm back again. Thank you to everyone who sent me a message, now I know for sure there are people out there so I feel much better. Someone checked the Griffith list for me today and came up with zero on my two names. Can anyone tell me if the Griffith list is for all of Ireland or for individual Townlands? If it is for Townlands (Parishes?) then I could well be on another wrong list! I just feel so at odds trying to start my Irish ancestry, very confusing and not sure at all what I'm doing. Could anyone also advise me if I should go on the Ireland list too? I think it covers everything but not too sure if it would help me out or not. Anyway, will have to persevere and keep my eyes open. Perhaps it's just a case of reading more and picking up what I can from other subscribers. May (Western Canada)

    3. This is my first post too, I think it is just taking a while for people to find the list. Does anyone know about the availability of parish records for Elphin in the 1800's? Where and how can they be accessed? Looking for Carthy, particularly Thomas, reportedly born about 1827. 3. Hi, I have recently started to research my Irish ancestors and, so far, finding it rather difficult. Until a week ago I had no idea which part of Ireland they came from but then found on the 1881 Census for Stirling, Scotland, that my gggrandfather was from Caran. The information I have at present is very scant but I'm hoping that someone can help me determine if I'm on the correct list. I'm looking for Joseph COYLE and his wife Honora McGUIRE and their son, William, all of whom moved to Culross, Fife, Scotland probably in the early 1840's - I didn't find them on the 1841 Census. There is no trace of Joseph or Honora - death certificates etc., - so perhaps they moved back to Ireland. William married a Catherine MEIKLEJOHN and remained in Scotland. Any help at all from members on this list will be greatly appreciated. Thank you - May (Western Canada)

    1. Connaught- Mudrie
    2. My gggrandmother's name was Margaret Mudrie ( I am not sure of the spelling) b. about 1795 and her two daughters names were Roseann Hanlon b. about 1819 (not sure of spelling) and Mary Miner b. about 1815 These are all their maiden names. My father provided this info for me before his death. He said Margaret Mudrie was born in the province of Connaught in Galway or Roscommon. I am lost. I can't find any reference to the name Mudrie when I search Irish sites. I don't even know if Connaught is in Galway or Roscommon. Any ideas would be appreciated. Monica Britz

    3. I am seeking information about the Reverend Thomas Humphreys and/or his descendants. I believe that he was Rector at Killinvoy from ca 1911 to 1926 and then at Roscommon until at least the early 1940s where he was chaplain to the Roscommon County Home. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Roma McDougall, Melbourne.

Hi I'm not a regular subscriber to this list, but I discovered this Statistical Account of Kilronan in a web site. http://edina.ac.uk/cgi/StatAcc/StatAcc.cgi Statistical Account of the Parish of Kilronan in Ireland. If you go to the Table of Contents and click on the 1791-1799 dates and go down the page until you see the above. It makes interesting reading. Cheers Frank McGonigal Ont.Canada.
