Hello to All, Can I ask for some help - any help at all would be appreciated - on information re my ancestor BRIDGET KEAVEY. She appeared before the Roscommon Quarter Session on 27th June 1850 charged with larceny of 5 dead ducks , which were originally thought to have been the property of John Kean/Kane but then found to be the property of Connor Greavey or McGreevy. Her age was recorded as 23 (i.e. born 1827) she was catholic and single. Other details recorded on her convict indent are that she had brothers David, John and Patrick and a sister Mary. She came from the townland of Faraher in the parish of Oran where the family name is spelled Keary - Karey - Keavey - Keavney. William Grey, a policeman gave evidence against her. At the time of her death in Victoria Australia in 1905 her daughter recorded that her mother's parent's names were Frank Featherstone and Kate Keavy so perhaps Bridget was the child of unmarried Kate Keavy or perhaps Kate's marriage to Frank Feathersone was her 2nd marriage and she was previously Mrs. Kate Keavy. I wonder if there is anyone in the parish of Oran who can suggest how to find the birth registrations/baptisms for the Keavy family. Kind Regards from Noelene who found out just a few months ago that she lives just 2 doors from the cemetery where Bridget Keavy now rests.
Hi I found a christening on the web for a Franciscum Doyle 17 November 1835 Father Hubertae Doyle mother Scicilae Glinn. Killtomb and Camma Roscommon Ireland. Does anyone have access to additional information from this area? My questions would be is it possible the Hubertae which I take to be a latinized version of Hubert be mistranscribed(I am looking for a Herbert). If it is indeed Herbert, did this couple have other children? Their names and birth dates. I am also looking for a marriage of a Joseph Doyle to Leonorah Byrnes abt 1860-62. Thank you for any information you can provide. Betty Terranova (nee Doyle)Get more from the Web. FREE MSN Explorer download : http://explorer.msn.com
I can't seem to make any progress on my NASH line from Roscommon. Supposedly my ggrandmother, Agnes B. Nash, immigrated from the town of Roscommon in Co. Ros. to Brooklyn, NY. We have no idea WHEN, nor what her parents names were, but her siblings were: Mariah, Patrick, & James. My cousin spoke with her only living child today & she told her that her mother was "very secretive" about her age & anything about her past. They all traveled back to Ireland 3 or 4 times, but only to visit her husband, Kieran CURLEY's family in Athlone. We were hoping she could give us some clue, but all she remembered was BOYLE - but I'm not sure if it was the name of the townland or something...anyone ever heard of it? Agnes's son, Thomas Curley, received his confirmation in Ireland during one of their 4-month visits. Has anyone ever requested these documents? I'm curious what info might have been listed on it. If anyone has heard of the Boyle area, please email me....I'm at a loss at what to do with such crappy info! Thanks! ~Sue :}

Hi - I've been on this Roscommon list for quite a while, and it's not very active. I see that they must have just started archiving it this Jan. - so you could go to http://archives.rootsweb.com/th/index/irl-roscommon and see the recent posts. Don't give up. I think I, too, may someday find our link to Roscommon! http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/irl-roscommon This URL will take one direct to the archives. With recent exchanges we hope the list is growing and exchanges of information will exponentially increase. Roscommon is of course a hot box of history and we are finding more and more resources there to help us find clues to our ancestors who lived in that area of Connaught. Looking for ancestors of 2 brothers who came to the US in the late 1840s. Philip Farrell and Lawrence Farrell were the children of a Michael Farrell and Unknown Farrell. They came to Newark, NJ, settling their and raising their families. Philip was married to a Bridget O'Neil and Lawrence was married to a Mary Selby(sp?). Any help out there? There might have been another brother by the name of Thomas. Judy in NC
Hi, I realize this is a long shot but in another message board I saw a reference to a Herbert Leo DOYLE from Roscommon. Unfortunately, it was an old posting and no one respondied to my follow up. On the LDS site, I saw a Francis Doyle christened 1830 in Kiltomb and Camma. The family names I am looking for include: Joseph. Francis, Bernard, Herbert Leo, James. I am also looking for a Leonorah BYRNES who married Joseph DOYLE abt 1860. Joseph and Leonorah moved to manchester and later to NY. We have been able to trace the family from Manchester forward but unfortunately not back to Ireland. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Excuse me if you receive duplicate posts. I have sent this to several lists. Connaught Journal Galway, Ireland Monday, August 12, 1839 The Galway Hunt have passed a vote of thanks to T. REDINGTON, Esq., M.P. for his exertions to promote the chase in this county-a compliment which was never more deservedly bestowed. On Friday Mr. BURKE, assistant poor law commissioner, attended the court-house of Loughrea, for the purpose of explaining the provisions of the poor law act, and of declaring a union.-At one o'clock on the motion of denis DALY, Esq., Dunsandle, and seconded by J.B. BURKE, Esq.,St. Clarens, Sir John BURKE, Bart., was called to the chair. On the bench were M.J. BROWNE, Moyne, J.P.; J.L. BRICKNELL, Loughrea, J.P.; John LOPDELL, Athenry, J.P.; H. Blake, Dartfield, J.P.; James CLARKE, Creag abbey, J.P.; Edward M'DERMOTT, Ranore, J.P.; J.W.H. LAMBERT, Aggard, J.P.; Thomas BERMINGHAM, Caram***, J.P.; Thomas LYNCH, Lavally, J.P.; James H. BURKE, St Clarens, J.P.; J.H. RIDGE, Loughrea, James SMYTH, Loughrea; H. CLARKE, Loughrea; and J. DALY, Killins, Esqrs., and in the court which was excessively crowded, a great many of the gentlemen of the town and vicinity of Loughrea. Mr. BURKE addressed the meeting at considerable length and in a most lucid and satisfactory manner explained the provisions of the act as well as the various interogatories put to him. The Earls of Leitrim and Charlemont have generously granted to the Rev. Mr. WARD of Joyce country, in this county, a site for building a chapel on in this district, and have also contributed the sum of 50£ towards its erection.-The same noblemen have also granted a site for a chapel at Fa***ll, in this county, together with the liberal subscriptiojns of 100£ to aid in building it. Such well-directed generosity requires no comment. Among the first works to be proceeded with, should the Shannon improvement bill pass, will be the erection of a new bridge at Athlone; and certainly there is no portion of the proposed improvements more imperatively necessary. R.J. Mansergh St George, Headford, has given to the poor of Tuam. The subscriptions collected there are expended in flagging and paving the town. J.T. JOYNER, Esq., manager of the Provincial Bank of Ireland, Ballina, has received from a lady resident in Limerick, "the widow's mite," a sum of 20£, which he has applied to relive the distressed poor of Ballina. The guns at the batteries on the Lower Shannon are remounted upon cast iron or metal carriages, which revolve with case in any circle, so as to command any given point. There are at Scatters, six long 20 pounders and two howitzers; also a large powder magazine, from which the other fortifications are supplied. New potatoes are coming in such abundance into the Castlebar market as to have already reduced the price to 3-1/2d. per stone. The Lord Lieutenant has appointed John Robert CROGHAN, of Tullevaran, a chief constable of police, and to be stationed at Loughrea. We understand that the Rev. B.J. ROCHE, now in London, collecting means for the completion of his New Chapel, will preach a Charity Sermon at Moorefield's Chapel, the Sunday next. Sir Michael O'LOGHLEN has arrived on a visit at Port, the seat of his brother, Hugh O'LOGHLEN, Esq., in the county of Clare. The Hon. Lady Burton CONYNGHAM, aunt to the Marquis CONYNGHAM, is seriously indisposed at her seat, Carrigholt Castle. On Wednesday a deputation from the town of Rathkeale, in the county of Limerick, consisting of Messrs. MULCAHY, M'COY, and O'HANLON, passed through this town, enroute to Outerand, for the purpose of presenting to Nicholas J FRENCH, Esq., S.M., an address and Gold Snuff Box, in testimony of their regret at his departure from amongst them, and in consideration of his imporatant and valuable service as a Magistrate during his official stay among them. Excuse me if you receive duplicate posts. I have sent this to several lists. Connaught Journal Galway, Ireland Monday, August 12, 1839 To the Editor of the Connaught Journal. SIR-Permit me, through the medium of your paper, to make an appeal to the humanity and justice of the Gentlemen of Tuam and its neighborhood. I, on the sixteenth of June, commenced at my private expense, preventing starvation too progressively; from one hundred to five hundred families daily, as you may percieve by the subjoined account, verified on oath- I did so calculating on the sympathy of the Generous Public, in which I never was, nor I am sure shall I see on the present occasion be, disappointed ; and am convinced it is only necessary that it should be known to prevent my being at the exorbitant loss of one hundred and thirty six pounds ten shillings.--Indeed I would ask the Landed Proprietors If, without some exertion to prevent starvation, their properties or lives would be safe from the effects of utter destitution,and its consequent disease? The amount of misery may be ascertained by the almost incredible, but not the less founded in truth, fact, that there are at this instant In the two Pawn offices of this town pledges to the amount of one thousand pounds sterling, made up in loans of one shilling, and under that sum one penny. It is, however, due to the Committees in management of the Government Fund, and this Subscription on which it was obtained, to state that on a more particular Inquiry, I have not rightly judged of its efficiency in affording relief, and am more free to confirm, having seen the list of Labourers employed, they could not perhaps do better, subjected to one condition on which it was received. And, indeed, I feel bound to make this admission, knowing that honour and principle that ever guided many gentlemen connected with its management. I conclude, by stating that I never shall regret how I have acted, whether I may become the victim of a mistaken confidence or not. I remain, Sir, your obediant servant. The following was taken from a book called "The History of the County of Welland", page 519. The County of Welland is located in Ontario, Canada. "PATRICK ROCK, hotel keeper, Port Robinson, was born in the town of Roscommon, Ireland, Feb 13th, 1837. His parents were Owen and Bridget (Leonard) Rock. When our subject was about three years of age, the family came to America and settled in Albany, NY, where they remained some time, and then went to Lockport, NY, from whence they came to Canada and settled in Stamford, where Patrick attended school. In 1853 they removed to Wainfleet Township, and there the Mother died. Our subject, after going west and stopping a season, engaged in farming, which business he followed until 1884, when he began keeping the hotel in Port Robinson. The house is conveniently situated. Mr Rock is a good landlord, and does a fair share of the hotel trade. He was married in 1863 to Elizabeth A Pierce, a native of Welland County. They have five children, Mary A, Emma, Olivia and Almeda (twins) and John. They are adherents of the Episcopalian church." I am interested in the Rock family in Roscommon prior to their going to America. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bob Driscal, Penn Valley, California
