    2. Registration of non-Catholic marriages began in 1845 in Ireland. Registration of births, marriages and deaths, regardless of religion, began January 1, 1864. Certificates for births, marriages and deaths for all of Ireland until 1922 and for the Republic since 1922 are housed in Dublin. Belfast has the records for Northern Ireland from 1922 to present in addition to the all Ireland records from 1864-1922. Civil registration of births, deaths and marriages in Ireland names the townland that is the address in rural Ireland. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Mormons, has copies of almost all of the General Register Office indices and some registers, making direct access to both registers and indices possible through the local Family History Centers. You can do-it-yourself at the local Family History Centers because the FHL has acquired Irish civil registration records. 2. I always held the Queen Mum in high esteem, only wrote to her the other week, to see if she remembered my great uncle she once visited in hospital, as he worked at Buckingham Palace for over 40 years, and I have the King and QUeen photographed next to him, surveying bomb damage at the Palace 1940. It is a sad time to learn of her passing, a lovely lady, who will be sorely missed through out the World. God rest you Ma'am. from Carterton Districts Historical Society in New Zealand. signed secretary Adele Pentony-Graham. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don Kelly" <donkelly@grovenet.net> To: <IRL-ROSCOMMON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 31, 2002 6:41 AM Subject: [IRLRosc'mn] condolences > I have never had many opinions about the royal family of Britain, but I > always loved Queen Mum. > > My heart today is sad at her passing. 2. Robert Higgins
    3. I'm Searching for Michael Higgins born 1808 somewhere in Ireland possibly roscommon. He married Johannah Brady around 1833. He and Johannah left Ireland for Canada, probably as newlyweds. Earliest records found in Canada, are land lease records for the year of 1834 in Sandwich East Ontario Canada. Also have a Thomas Higgins living very close to Michael, could be his younger brother. 2. The Irish Census of 1901 and 1911 is not indexed by personal name. You must know the Electoral District. However, I just checked the FHLC and there is no holding for either 1901 or 1911. 2. Jane Lyons
    3. Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of 1837 describes townlands. parishes and other divisions in Ireland at that time. He tells us about each area, the physical description, who the landowners were - that is those whose houses are named, he tells us what employment was in an area, how many schools there were, most importantly he tells us how many churches there were or religious parishes and which was united with which - he points us to religious records for that area at that time. In time - the parishes may have split up again or united with another and today - while we are told for example that there are x number of catholic parishes in this diocese or that one, this is not the picture as it was 150 years ago. On my web site, I have lists of RC parishes, priests and the closest post town in 1836. I compare the spellings or the changes in parish numbers between that and 1931. The parishes in 1931 are probably pretty much as they were today. I also have some exerpts of the Topographical Dictionary...............and some references from Irish birth mariage and death indexes. These are divided into separate pages for each of the registration districts associated with a county. WHile people don't realise it - if their ancestors lived close to a county border in any area covererd by the Poor Law Union of another county - then their civil registration was with that other county. This is the link to my Roscommon page. http://www.from-ireland.net/contents/roscommconts.htm Jane

    2. Thanks, Jane! My great-grandmother, Catherine Mahon, came from Ireland. She was born anywhere from 1846-1853. I believe her father was James Mahon. That is all I know and I am quite stuck in my research. Ceal

Patrick Dolan, S.J., Campion College, Wisconsin, U.S.A. in a letter to a relative in Roscommon says:- "The Allies will get 350 million bushels of our wheat within the next half year; the corn is waving in unnumbered acres now, and will be more than enough to feed ourselves; our gold we'll give, all you need of it; and last, and best, we'll give an army of five million to help you drive the last vestige of militarism from Europe, and make it a free as our own free land. "Between us and Canada is a boundary line three-nearly four thousand miles long, and there isn't a gun, or a sign of a gun between us- that's Democracy- that's freedom, people so free that they don't know how to mistrust a neighbour- or arm against him. 2. Registration of non-Catholic marriages began in 1845 in Ireland. Registration of births, marriages and deaths, regardless of religion, began January 1, 1864. Parish records--primarily baptisms, marriages, and burials--provide the best source of vital record information in the centuries before civil registration. If you search the Index and can identify your target, note the name, district, volume and page, necessary in order to obtain a photocopy of the full information given in that entry. Then, determine the appropriate FHLC microfilm number. You may then complete the "Request to Photocopy" following the instructions to the letter and mail it with a check for US$2.00. I don't know if they accept foreing checks. However, GRO in Dublin does. Foreign applications by mail: Fees are payable in Euro checks or bank drafts drawn on an Irish Bank, made payable to the Registrar General. Sterling checks, Postal Orders, US$ checks are accepted. Checks etc. for certificates should be made payable to the "Superintendent Registrar" The minimum amount for a check drawn on a non-Irish bank is €12.70. I bundle my requests so that I meet the minimum fee. Births, Death and Roman Catholic marriages certificates are available from Office of the Registrar General Joyce House 11/13 Lombard Street East Dublin 2 Ireland Before 1864 you must use other sources to find/verify information, see http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlwat/instruct.htm Ellen researching Famine Immigrants HUNT/McDANIEL from Roscommon.
