I am looking or a FARRELL family who resided in Castlerea in Roscommon. I have a Michael with a wife Sarah or Catherine in the early 1820s. They had at least 3 sons -- Thomas, Lawrence and Phillip. Does anyone know anything about this family? Judy in NC

I would expect the C of E because he married in that faith and had his children baptised in that same faith in England. If not that it would be R.C. Many thanks for your reply. Registration of non-Catholic marriages began in 1845 in Ireland. Registration of births, marriages and deaths, regardless of religion, began January 1, 1864. Parish records--primarily baptisms, marriages, and burials--provide the best source of vital record information in the centuries before civil registration. The Primary Valuation of Ireland was carried out between 1848 and 1864 by Richard Griffith and is also known as Griffith's Valuation. It is a valuation of property holdings carried out in order to determine liability to pay the Poor Rate (for the support of the poor and destitute within each Poor Law Union). As it lists every landholder and householder in Ireland it is the only comprehensive guide to where people lived in mid-nineteenth century Ireland. Does anyone have any knowledge of my family in County Roscommon or suggestions for further research? Katherine Nolan was born circa 1861 in County Roscommon,Ireland. She emigrated circa 1865 to Brooklyn,NY,USA as a 4 year old child. Her father is Michael F. Nolan, b. 1825-1830 in Ireland and her mother is Jane O'Brien, b.Oct. 1825,Ireland. I've traced them in Brooklyn but not Ireland. Michael's father is Thomas Nolan and his mother is Catherine ... Jane's father is unknown but her mother is Mary Ryan. Both sets of Katerine Nolan's grandparents are probably born around 1800 to 1808. In searching Griffith's Valuation for Thomas Nolan or any Nolans,O'Brien/Briens or Ryans in County Roscommon I found the following:(Parish-date-townland-name-acres-tithes(vicar-lay) 1.St.John's- 17 Oct.1826- Carnagh East- Patk. Kelly proprietor & several others- Summary: The only parish where I found all the associated surnames is Moore parish; however, the only Thomas Nolan in County Roscommon in Griffith's is the Thomas in Carnagh East, St.John's parish. While this will need further research, it appears that this Thomas is Michael's father and that Michael Nolan was born in Carnagh East, St.John's parish. (May be true for his children as well.) It also indicates possible relationship with Mathew, who was adjacent to him in 1826, and Patk. and Pat Nolan.( Patk. and Pat Nolan may or may not be one individual.) Thank you very much, Leila Mayberry
Hi List: I'm new and don't know if I'm even on the right list. I am looking for my grandfather's birthplace...one member of his brother's family says he was born in Roscommon, my uncle told me he was born in Carrick-on-the Shannon-Co. Leitrim. I haven't been able to find out anything. My grandfather was Luke Sweeney, son of Bernard and Jane(Morris) Sweeney. Luke was born in 1864, immigrated in 1880 or 1882 (two different census dates). If anyone can help, would appreciate it. Thanks, Rose

Hi! I am new to the list and would like to know if anyone is researching the surname Breheny/Judge and Gurhy/Gurry. My ggggrandmother, Catherina Breheny/Judge Gurhy was from County Roscommon. She was born in 1790. She married Edmund Gurhy of Riverstown, Co. Sligo, February 26, 1816 in the Diocese of Elphin, RC Parish of Boyle, County Roscommon. They had thirteen children. Three of them died. Their children were all baptized in Riverstown, County Sligo. Anyone with information concerning these surnames... please email me at sslaydon@cfl.rr.com Thanks! Shannon
Hi there list, I am back after several months' absence. Would anyone have any historical information on life in Roscommon around 1800-1830 or so? My g.g.grandmother, BRIDGET McNAMARA RILEY left Roscommon in 1835 on the Duchess of Northumberland as a young, single woman on her own, for a new life in Australia. I have no information regarding her origins, don't know her Mum or Dad's names or exactly where in Roscommon she came from. I'd like, at least, to know what her previous life might have been like, what kind of clothes she wore, etc. and what experiences might have led her to get on that ship. Any suggestions as to background reading I might do? TIA Leone
