    3. Here goes: Benjamin Hartwell Doupe writtne by Mrs George Pearson: The homestead of the first Benjamin Hartwell Doupe is located three-quarters of a mile north of Crandall Manitoba on 2-14-25. Benjamin was born May 31,1861 at St Mary's Ontario and died April 27,1914 at Crandall. He came to Manitoba to take up his homestead in 1882. The end of the railroad was then at Brandon and he walked from there to where his homestead is situated. The community was later named Carlingville, when a school was built. His first home was a dugout for himself and his oxen. When he later built a log house, he married Jane Webb at Portage La Prairie. Jane was born in Goderich Ont Oct 18,1866 and died April 13,1925 at Crandall. Ben engaged in mixed farming and owned his own threshing machine. He was the first caretaker of Crandall cemetery and remained so until his heath. He planted the trees at the cemetery. There were 11 children born on the homestead-five girls and six boys. Mary Elizabeth married Leonard Johnson (one sone, Delymer) Joseph Gordon married Prudence Emily Eaton (two daughters-Marjorie and Geraldine) Anna and Frances died in their youth. Benjamin H married Gladys Irene HUme (one daughter-Margaret and five sones-Harold,Melville (deceased), Ben,Ron and Stan. Euretta Jane married Alfred Lints (seven daughters and two sons-Edna,Elva,Hollis,Lois,Della,Christina,Fern,Sanford and Elwood) Thomas Doupe was unmarried. Samuel ARthur married Gretta Phillips. Earl Doupe married May Jahnke (one daughter and one son-Lois and Arthur) Martha Mable married George Pearson (two daughters and one son-Jean,Georgina and James) Albert Doupe died in infancy. J Gordon Doupe: Born Feb 9,1888 in a log house on NE 2-14-25. I remember Father sowing grain by hand and one fall the crop being threshed by horse power. I still have an axle and two wheels of a four wheeled wagon that was used to hual the horse power device that came from Arrow River. The wagon was used under the caboose that travelled with the Carlingville threshing company--Ben being a member. Married Prudence Emily Eaton, a music teacher who came our from Nova Scotia to vist the Canns in 1910. Dec 18,1912 married. They settled in Miniota but after digging some 28 holes for water and finding none, they moved theh house across the boundary line and into the Hamiota Municipality. Steve Robus witched a found a never ending supply of water somewhat alkali but water. The horses refused to drink it. Mrs Doupe carried on an active and loyal interest in all church affairs and was organist for many years. She passed away after a sudden and sort illness June 11,1938 and lies at rest in the Crandall cemetery. The daughter Marjorie was born Oct 21,1914 and married Al Stevenson. The second daughter Geralding was born June 28,1918 and married Mr Steen. Gordon suffered a severe stroke in 1968 and was transferred to the Assiniboine Hops in Brandon. He remained a wheelchair patient for a year and a half. He spent the last year of his life in the Internaitonal Nursing HOme Brandon where he passed away Mar 6,1971. He lies at rest in the Crandall cemetery. Benjamin Hartwell Doupe (1890-1966) Attended school at Carlingville and later took a business course at Wheat City Business College in Brandon. Always interested in Church, school and community holding offices in each at various times. In 1918 he married Gladys Irene Hume of Elkhorn (teacher) They had 6 children: Harold Hartwell (1920) Melville JOhn (died in earyl childhood) Margaret Ethel (1924) Benjamin Hartwell (1926) Ronald Earl (1930) Stanley Alvin(1933) Harold married Joyce Ellen Phillpot (nurse) two daughters -Marilyn 1942 and Joan born 1943 Harold completed his pilots traing course but was more interested in the mechanics and structure of the craft. Margaret received her Bachelor of Science taught in the area then received her Diploma of Education from the U of Manitoba. In 1951 she married Edwin D Heise of Isabella. Three children-Sandra (1953) Allan (1955) and Carolyn 1957. Ben finsihed grade xi and joined the RCAF. He then completer his teaching taught for several years. Then moved on to finance and investments. In 1955 he married Audrey Brisson of Virden. Ron attended Brandon College for three years and then worked on geology survey. He changed to a municipal clerk. In 1954 married Noraleen Cockwill of Bagonie. Two boys Colin (1958) and Grant (1962) Stan is a resident of Crandall (THIS IS THE DOUPE THAT IS LOOKING AFTER OUR AUNTS CEMEMTERY PLOT IN CRANDALL) Stan is married to Velma Sherritt of Oakvill. four sons Scott (1965) Glenn (1957) Neil (1967) Malcolm (1965) Mrs Doupe died after a lengthy illnes in 1946. Mr D died aftera sudden illness in 1965 and was ladi to rest in Crandall cemetery in 1966
