Hi Sharon, I think the appropriate meaning would be a farmer who cultivates his own land. There are other meanings, but this sounds correct since it's my understanding many of the Irish Palatines were farmers. What branch > are you on??? Hazel Carlton > Hi Hazel, My great grandmother was Ellen Shier who married Robert Doupe. Ellen’s parents were Charlotte Switzer and Adam Shier. Adam’s patronymic lineage, as I understand it, is: Samuel Shier-Nicholas Shier Jr.-Nicholas Shier-Adam Shier-Johann (Hans) Adam Scheier. Charlotte’s mother was Sarah Shier and her lineage, again as I understand it, also traces back to Hans Adam Scheier: Sarah Shier-Henry Shier-Christopher Shier-Charles Shier-Hans Adam Scheier. So unless I’ve counted wrong, Ellen’s parents share the same great, great, great grandfather. This seems relatively common among the Irish Palatines, at least in my lineage. There are other Shiers as well. Robert Doupe’s grandfather, Samuel, married Catherine Shier. Unfortunately, I have no idea where Catherine came from. If anyone has info on her I would appreciate it. I’m sure her lineage will weave somehow into that of all the other Shiers. Like many of you, I have only recently become aware of the vast amount of information regarding my Irish Palatine ancestry and like you I find it intriguing and fascinating. I knew we had some kind of German links because of all the German-sounding names in our background, but I had no idea of the events surrounding the mass migration in 1709. In our family, we regarded our ancestors as loyal British subjects who came from Ireland. Hope you’re all having a good day.
