Hi Jean I've been following your messages on the list. A couple of points that you might want to consider!! Although the Palatinate was in what we know today as Germany, at the end of the 17th century it had become a place of refuge for Protestants from all over Europe, particularly Huguenots from the Alsace-Lorraine. Consequently, any IP family's origins are subject to speculation and further investigation. Secondly, it is not totally surprising that your family gave it's nationality as Irish. By the 19th century many of them had been assimilated and considered themselves Irish. One of my own ancestors, Jacob LeGear, that emigrated to Ontario in 1843 with his family gave his nationality as Bavarian in the 1861 census whilst his adult sons gave theirs as Irish. My own father, born in Rathkeale in 1919, knew nothing of his Palatine heritage and always considerd himself Irish. Hope this helps.
