In reference to the second part of your posting on the location of Bhaile an tSioda Bhaile an tSioda = Ballyseedy Ballyseedy, a parish in Trughanacmy barony in County Kerry. Ballyseedy Castle was the mansion of the Blennerhassetts, who married into many of the Palatine families, in the Ballymacelligott area of Kerry. Hoffman, Poff, Groves/Grouse, Benner, Fitzelle, Gleasure, Bovenizer, Miller, Barkman, Cronsberry families settled in the area, brought there by John Blennerhassett family in the late I7OOs. Some of the families moved to the Sandes and Leslie Estates around Tarbert. Regards Kate [email protected] http://www.netidea.com/~kerryroutes/
Dear Kate Many thanks indeed for replying to my message on IRL-PALATINE. You have prompted me to read up more about the Blennerhassett history. With regard to the Palatine names you mention, I'm a Barkman descendent myself, and do know of family connections/intermarriages with the Blennerhassett, Fitzell, Hoffman etc families from the Ballymacelligott area. So there's quite a coincidence here! I don't know a great deal more about the history of this song - the Gaelic version I have that mentions Bhaile an tSioda was handed to me by a friend. I wonder if you know more about it? My mother was born near Adare Co. Limerick (Barkman) - but I was born and bread in England. My knowledge of the Irish language is very poor I'm afraid. But I try to link my interest in tracing my own family history with wider understanding of history, geography, culture etc. Once again, many thanks for your help.
