Hi Sharon, I think the appropriate meaning would be a farmer who cultivates his own land. It's sometimes difficult to sort out the early Palatines because they kept recycling the same names. There was indeed a marriage between Mary Ruckle and Jacob Switzer. She was born abt 1781, the daughter of Daniel who was the son of Sebastian. A later Daniel, son of George of Adare, had a daughter Catherine who married John Switzer. That marriage took place in Ontario, Canada after Catherine's first husband, John Empey, died in 1857. Catherine and John Switzer went on to have ten children. As far as the wife of Johann Christopher Schweitzer goes, Henry Z. Jones in "The Palatine Families of Ireland" gives her name as Catherine Elizabeth, but doesn't supply a surname. This is the first I've heard that she might have been a Ruckle, but if so, her father was probably Caspar. None of these folks are mentioned in Ann Brandt's book which deals only with Ruckle families who lived in the United States......Karen
I have an Elizabeth Switzer who married, George Sparling in Adare Ireland in 1813. They had three children, William, Catherine b1814 and Christopher b1816. Is this the same Elizabeth Switzer? I wonder if you could check this book for any reference to the following: Was a Jacob Switzer married to a Mary Ruckle circa 1808 ? (Jacob Switzer was father to 10 boys but was, as I suspect, his wife Mary RUCKLE?) It would be great if you could clear this up or just add more weight to my hunch. My SWITZERS didn't emmigrate from Ireland to Canada until 19th Century. Family lore has it that when the father died in Ireland he left an entailed estate called Castle Blainey. I wonder where or if this ties in with the Southwell estate. We have traced graves of members of the family in Limerick (I think ~ I was just a kid). Any ideas? I have a copy of "THE RUCKLE FAMILY: HIstory and Descendants of John & Martha Ruckle", Ann H. Brandt, Editor published in Bloomsburg, PA, July, 1986. Is this the book you're interested in, or did she write another? Most of the information in this book concerns descendants of Balthasar Rockel who was born in Germany in 1707 and died in Shoenersville, PA in 1800. Balthasar named his son Melchior. Put these two together with Caspar Ruckle who settled in Limerick and you have three wise men. I've always felt that there is a connection between the two families somewhere back in Germany. However, no one has found the link so far as I know. This book does contain some Palatine history in the front and a little sketchy information on a few Irish Palatines (all Ruckles, all in the USA) in the 2 page addendum at the back. I don't know where or whether you can obtain a copy of this book, but I'm willing to do look ups...............Karen

I've been "lurking" for some time on this list in hopes that something might pop for my elusive ancesters. Do any of you have the above in your ancestry ? They got married in 1756 in Philadelphia at St. Micheal & Zion Lutheran Church. Their children married Ann Maria Sprenkle, Dorothea Sprenkle, William Jones, ? Moore, James H. DeBurst, Mary Ford, John Schreiner, and Abigail Maxwell or Maxfield. Jacob's occupation was brickmaker. He lived in Philadelphia and Lancaster or York County. His children moved to Kentucky and branches moved onto MO and LA, and MS. I don't know if Johan Jacob Pop/Bobb(b. 9/25/1725; d 9/3/1791) and his wife (m. 11/20./1759) Maria Elizabeth Muoock (Molach) (b. 2/3/1735; d 3/7/1823) were part of the Palentine immigration or not. Thanks Tina.
Has anyone seen a map (available on line) that would show the extent of the Sir Thomas Southwell Estate and show the villages that were created by/for the Irish/Palatines 1709? Fred H. The Southwell Estate included three villages: Ballingrane, Court Matrix and Killiheen. Also, there was some kind of settlement by the Manor House, Castle Matrix. Today, only Ballingrane continues as sort of a village. My estimate would be that the estate was about 5 k across and wrapped around the north and west of Rathkeale. There are maps in People Make Places. At least it explains why my "Irish" grandmother looked like Hitler. I could never figure, out until I started doing the family genealogy, why she didn't look Irish....she wasn't, she was German. She truly did look like Hitler. She even had a mustache. Zelda On Sat, 27 Mar 2004 18:58:36 -0500, Judy Lyn wrote: > But it is great to talk to those that have the same > heritage as me.
