    3. Hi Lists, (multiple posting to IP, IRL-WEX, WEX) I have been reading "People make Places" again and I have discovered a previously missed footnote that sheds some glimmer of light on my prior concerns about the lack of official documentation about approved settlements or migration from Kerry, Limerick or Tipperary and the relatively small size of the group of Palatine settlers in Co. Wexford. The notation related to a letter published in "The Irish Book Lover" November 1951 from J.G. Rhynehart. The letter opens with a quote from "Notes and Gleanings relating to the County of Wexford." Martin Doyle [Dublin, 1868]. "A colony of Germans, who had been shipwrecked near Arklow, many years ago, was benevolently located on and around Old Ross, by a member of the Ram family, who let forty acres to each family." The letter goes on to lament the lack of identified documentation and appeal for assistance in researching this area. I believe that this J.G. Rhynehart is John George Rhynehart, 18 Feb. 1895 - 29 Aug. 1978, born in Parish of Templeshambo, Co. Wexford. (my 2nd cousin once removed) Being the son of Robert Rhynehart 1856-1934 & Susan Tulley 1855-1938. My records indicate that John married Francis ? about 1920. They had two children: Robert John who died as a child and Victor, born about 1925. I show Victor married Elizabeth Wilkinson about 1950. (this would fit in with his father having time to research the family). If Victor and Elizabeth had any surviving children they would now be in their fifties. As historical works on Ireland at a county level are few and far between in Australia, I would like to find Victor, his children or anybody else who has researched this area to determine if John was able to glean any addition historical data related to early Palatine settlement in Co. Wexford. {I am able to copy the Irish Book Lover article for anyone interested but unable to access it.} Brian Rhynehart. Canberra, Australia. 3. Can someone send me the posting on Andrew Cunningham/Ann Switzer, please. That family connects to my Switzer family that settled in Emily twp., Victoria Co., Ontario in 1825. I have found no records on my Tobias SWITZER/Elizabeth ? from Ireland. One of Andrew's CUNNINGHAM's daughters married one of Tobias SWITZER's son. They may have been first cousins. 3. Hi Gary A few days ago I called out to the Irish Palatine Heritage Centre to pay my annual membership subscription and there I met Walter Ruttle!. I persuaded him to accompany me back to Courtmatrix for a "sneak" look at your new house! It is a fine house - approx. 50 ft. long and you can see where it was once a single story thatched house before it was raised to 2 storey. You have a lot of work ahead - but what job satisfaction!. A bucket of plaster and a bag of cement will help a lot!! There is a good-sized "haggard" behind the house and outbuildings which will not take too much work and did I see an Orchard further back? Please may I have pictures, and maybe one of your newly discovered Palatine Well too. Thanks! Berta ___________________________________________________________ALL-NEW Yahoo! 2. Ed H.
    3. Hi Everyone, I am descended from Doupes on my mother's side but not on my father's side. My grandfather (dad's father) used to get a kick out of saying something like, "Ah yes, she's a Doupe isn't she? Yes, she's a Doupe." He would of course pronounce Doupe correctly as "dope" and then chuckle away quite impressed by his wit :-) :-) Hope everyone is doing well. For example... Daub.. in german I am told, the B is pronounced p, so it sounded like doup or dope, and that is the way it was written down.. the spelling doupe, is the way it is now.. and the correct pronounciation is "dope" not doupee or dupe, but i guess no one want to be called a doupe, :))

    3. Susan, Sorry, I had posted this reply to your personal e-mail rather than the list! I don't know if this is any help in your research or if you already know this but the following information was included recently in posts on other lists: There's a recent book by Dr. Patrick J. O'Connor about the Palatines in Ireland titled "People Make Places". The book notes eight hundred and twenty-one families with more than 3,000 people came to Ireland in 1709 and by 1720 only 162 families remained. 103 of those families were settled on the Southwell Estate in Limerick, and 35 on the Abel Ramm estate in Co. Wexford, with smaller groups in Co. Cork and in Dublin. In addition, some Palatine families also settled in the Ballyseedy/Ballymacelligott area of Kerry. They had been invited by the Blennerhassetts, a very prominent family there. Some of the surnames include Poff, Groves, Hoffman, Glazier, Switzer, and Fitzell. Palatine families married into the Blennerhassett families) also. I don't have any detail on any of the families. In addition, when I was researching the Embury-Wilson Land Patent in upstate New York State I also found a reference to at least one family going from Tipperary. I didn't copy the detail but just remember the county reference because it wasn't one of the more common locations referenced in Ireland. There's a very high likelihood the Empey surname could have been Anglicized wherever they settled which also adds to the research challenge. 1. Re: [IP] w1G: Re: Reunion...
    2. Walter, The Ruckle Reunon in Kingston was really great. It was held at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. The co-ordinator, Linda Cormick was wonderful. She arranged for us to have a meeting room for both days at Ban Righ Hall in the Fireside Room. It was a beautiful room with beautiful hardwood floors and a fireplace. The meetings held by the Joint Meeting of the CMHS/HSUMC were also held in Ban Righ Hall as were the dinners. So not only was the meeting room beautiful it was very convenient to all the other festivities. One of the quests in attendance at our Ruckle meeting on Saturday was Rev. J. William Lamb. He claimed not to be a descendant of the Ruckle's but an honorary member of the family. He is an expert on Barbara Ruckle Heck. It was his initial idea that we have a Ruckle Reunion during the Barbara Ruckle Heck Event. We joined the group for their bus tour on Friday and went to many interesting places. The Blue Church (which was open for us to go inside) and the Barbara Heck Monument were some of the highlights of the day. We had a nice luncheon at The Wall Street United Church Hall and a tour of the beautiful church. We also had a tour of Homewood, one of the oldest houses in Ontario, built by Dr. Solomon Jones, who attended Barbara Heck. It is made into a museum and there was a glass case in the entry hall with several artifacts of the Heck family. Elizabeth Heck's Sampler, Barbara Heck's Bible, Paul Heck's Bible and several other items. We were allowed to take pictures of the things in the glass case. There were refreshments served before we left for the next place We also went to The Landon Bay Center for a talk and refreshments in the Barbara Heck Hall. They had a mantle from the home of Jacob Heck, which was built in 1807. They also had a lock from one of the doors of the house. (The house was dismantled by the Dupont Company and stored in a barn. The barn later burned and destroyed the house.) It was a full day of wonderful things to see and do. Here too at landon Bay we were given refreshments of coffee, tea, juice, lemonade, cheese and crackers. The people of Kingston are very gracious.... Thanks to everyone for making our stay such a great experience. Carole

I know it was a real highlight to meet the famous Walter Ruttle. The way you described Walter's chuckle in your email to me left me almost seeing him and hearing him laugh out loud. It must have been thrilling to go to the home where your ancestors were born , the house that Sebastian Ruckel built. Where so much of our heritage was written about. Sheila at the museum, did you such a wonderful service. I know that you must feel much gratitude to her for her efforts in talking to Walter Ruttle and arranging your meeting. And Walter taking you to the Heck/Embury Memorial Church and showing you everything was another highlight for you I know. He must be a wonderful, wonderful person. I hope that someone has the answer as to how the Ruttle name came to be. I have always been told it was the Irish spelling. The original spelling being Ruckel. The spelling of my families name, the John Ruckle, line, was changed from Ruckel to Ruckle by a schoolmaster in Ireland according to an extract from a letter written by my 4th great grandfather, Thomas Ruckle in 1839: "The manner of spelling our name Ruckle was changed by the school-master in Ireland, who was an Englishman - it was originally Ruckel as spelled in New York. There are other branches of the family in Ireland who spell the name Ruttle, viz - Ruttles of Rathkeal, Countly Limerick, Ireland." (copied June 1888, by Ida Allison) So, the abstract really doesn't say how the name was changed to Ruttle. I hope someone has the answer for you. I would love to hear from the Allison descendants. Does anyone have a copy of the entire letter written by Thomas Ruckle in 1839? What a wonderful find that would be. How would we write to get a copy of the booklet, "The Irish Palatines" written by Dudley Levistone Cooney? I don't know what 6-7 euros is, how can I find out the amount in American money. It sounds like a wonderful booklet to own. Thanks for passing on the information. Do you have the address for the museum? Do they have an email address? Your idea to send family information for the files at the museum is a great one. I think I have ask too many questions. I am so glad to hear of your successful trip to Ireland. You have been a very nice email buddy and I look forward to meeting you soon in Western, Maryland. Thanks again, Carole Richardson ==== IRL-PALATINE Mailing List ==== Great minds talk about ideas. 2. Amazingly, I had the pleasure of meeting Walter Ruttle last week at the IP Heritage Museum and being given the grand tour of the area. What a wonderful human being! My 18 yr old son and I spent nearly 4 hours with him. There is no one who chuckles like Walter! And he is so filled with information that I feel most fortunate to learn from him. My encounter with Walter was due entirely to Sheila at the museum, who ran into him and told him I was there. She was most helpful in finding materials for me, and I enjoyed meeting her so much. The Ruckle and Stark info was more limited than I expected, and all of us descendants might want to pass along our findings for the files. The one question for Walter which is so obvious and that I neglected to ask is how did the name in Ireland become Ruttle? Does anyone know the answer? Also, I had not seen the Irish Palatines booklet by Dudley Levistone Cooney, in both German and English, published in 1999. I think the price was 6-7 euros. This is a wonderful publication, in case you have not gotten a copy. I think that it is such a user friendly piece that even my non-genealogy interested family members would value it. My best to all. Beverly Railey Walter Oakmont PA (near Pittsburgh) descendant of Ruckle and Starks who came to Western Maryland in 1822.

    2. Fred, Thank you for all those nice things you said. It was mine and Eleanor's pleasure to be able to come to Kingston and meet so many nice people. We had a great time during our trip to Kingston. Both meetings were well attended. It was a pleasure to meet so many of the Palatine descendants that I have corresponded with, as well as the new descendants that I met. There were many sounds of pleasure as we all looked at each other's information and pictures and began to exhange our histories. We were able to copy and exchange a lot of new information as well as old pictures. I have your booklet copied for you and will get the article copied today from Harper's Weekly and will send them on to you. Thanks again, Carole

    3. I would like to express my appreciation to Carole Ruckle Richardson and her sister Eleanor Ruckle Millken for hosting the Ruckle Reunion in Kingston as part of the joint meeting of the Canadian Methodist Historical Society and Historical Society United Methodist Church. I had to go back eight generations to the mother of my ancestor, Philip Embury, namely Margrath Ruckle, to establish my connection to this illustrious family. Not only did I discover more resource material for my own archives, but I also met face to face with so many fellow correspondents to this list. These benefits would not have been possible without the efforts of Carole and Eleanor as well as the support of their husbands. I only regret I was not able to return on Saturday to meet so many other descendants of this Irish Palatine family. Fred H. Hayward Oakville.
