    3. Helen, Just in case you have not already found it, do take a look at www.irishpalatines.org for background information on the Irish Palatines and an opportunity to support the Irish Palatine Association which, amongst other things, runs the museum in Rathkeale. Reading the archives at the moment and enjoying them. Also very new to the family research game. Looking for all the help I can get. However as of yet have not heard of anyone looking for Hess(e) roots. I am interested in talking to any Hess(e)'s out there, in particular any of them left in Ireland. My husband's family is one of the last, if not the last family, left in the Wexford, Ireland area. regards Helen Hesse _________________________________________________________________ Get an all-Ireland weather forecast at MSN Weather! http://www.msn.ie/weather ==== IRL-PALATINE Mailing List ==== Be the best you can be right where you are.

    3. Hi Liz, I get gathered into these emails because of an article we had in our magazine on the Palatines in Ireland. The centre in Rathkeale are the best place to start for info on Irish Palatines. Unfortunately, our website is sick at the moment, but keep checking as there is an abbreviated version of the article we published in 2004 which may be of interest to you. Have no Palatine links myself, but 'stepped out'with a Fitzelle in the 70s!! Does that count?? best Letitia Pollard Editor, Ireland of the Welcomes Failte Ireland, Baggot Street Bridge, Dublin 2, Ireland tel: (01) 6024397 fax: (01) 6024335 NOTE - I have a new email address, as set out below, please update your address book, thank you! letitia.pollard@failteireland.ie visit our website: www.irelandofthewelcomes.com -----Original Message----- From: LizHaren@aol.com [mailto:LizHaren@aol.com] Sent: 08 February 2005 17:43 To: IRL-PALATINE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [IP] Newcomer in Ireland Hiya Helen! Welcome to the IP list. It takes time to wake us up here, we're a bit like Brigadoon sometimes. Once you get everyone going they chat away, however. I do not have any Hesse in my lines and can't help you with yours, but there are individuals on this list who are fairly well versed in the Palatine's unique history in Ireland who can probably help you. What do you know about your Hesse line so far? My Palatine family name was Neazor (or neiser or naysor etc etc). There are no Neazor's left in Ireland that I am aware of! They settled around Rathkeale to the best of my knowledge and my ancestor came to NYC in the middle of the 1800's. I'm having trouble getting any further back on him, but I hold out hope. If you have any specific questions fire away. There are some pretty knowledgeable people on this list! Have fun! VonNeesor - he got upset if anyone used his "Von" part - because he was a German officer throughout the war. Wonder if he was any relation way, way back to your Neazor's??? Funny the things you remember on a wet Tuesday afternoon, isn't it? Marilyn in Lindsay, Ontario

    3. Hi Sharon Sorry, I can't be of help to you; but I'm hoping you may be able to help me. I'm interested in Smeltzers of Kilcooly. My g-g-g grandfather was William Smeltzer who married a Mary Bible. Their 1st son was born c 1838. The last child was named Catherine. (They had 9 children) Do you think there maybe some connection between your Catherine and William Smeltzer? Any help and info will be greatly appreciated. Im looking for any information on 3 known brothers John Young the eldest then Joseph and Henry. John Young married Catherine Smeltzer in Kilcooly and all 3 brothers moved to Canada sometime between 1828 and 1830. I have the information on them in Canada, but nothing about them in Ireland or who their parents were. Im assuming their father was John and mother Elizabeth as that is how these 3 brothers named their first children. If anyone has anything on these brothers please contact me. Im also assuming they had other brothers or sisters due to the 15 year difference in age between John and Henry. Henry is my GG-Grandfather. 1. Pennsylvania "Dutch"
    2. While searching different sites in the southwestern Pensylvania areas of my ancestors I came across this site: MINERD.COM As quoted, "While long-term assimilation is natural for any clan, other strong forces were at work to ultimately Americanize our family.  Wright’s Franklin of Philadelphia reports that Benjamin Franklin was partly to blame for being “especially critical of the Germans in western Pennsylvania” during the colonial era.  Franklin wrote: [Why should the Palatine boors be suffered to swarm into our settlements and, by herding together, establish their language and manners to the exclusion of ours?  Why should Pennsylvania, founded by the English, become a colony of aliens, who will shortly be so numerous as to Germanize us, instead of our Anglifying them?] Legislation was introduced in Parliament in the 1750s that would have kept Pennsylvania Germans from voting, as Wright says, “until they had acquired ‘a sufficient Knowledge of our Language and Constitution,’ and requiring that all newspapers, almanacs, and legal documents in the province be written in English.”  Under such restraints, it is little wonder that the German values were left behind."
