Greetings from New Zealand. Perhaps there is someone out there who should shed some light on my SHUELL family surname. My research finds Edward SHUELL b in Oldbury, Worcester, England 1849, later life traced to Sunderland, Manchester and Birmingham, England. His parents are thought to be Alfred SHUELL and Matilda ..?.. Edward SHUELL and his wife, also named Matilda came to NZ in 1911. It appears there were SHUELLS and are SHUELLS in Ireland, and I find from research that a family of SHUELL in England came from Latvia. Could this be a Jewish name? Possibly the name originated in Germany? I am most interested in finding the history of this name. Thank you in anticipation of help to solve this riddle. Noeline researching SHUELL/SHUEL/SCHUELL
Hi All, Just thought I would let you know that a new list is up and running after a hic-up on the Australia list. It is [email protected] And to subscribe to list mode [email protected] Seems to be a very friendly and helpful list for all of Australia. Hi, Package received Port Colborne Ok Thanks
I'm intrigued - you say your ancestor Adam Cornelius was a "sod" stealer??? What WAS a "sod stealer"? Was this an issue about cutting turf or peat for a fire that some bureaucrat objected to?? I'm interested, because it must have been so important to find fuel to keep the home warm especially in those long wet Irish winters. It's amusing sometimes how language changes. My mother used to tell me "I was born in an Irish bog" when she wanted to impress on me that I should appreciate the comforts of modern life. (She WAS born in a farmhouse, but there was a lot of bog-land around Tuogh/Adare, so she meant it figuratively - I think!) In England the word "bog" has come to be slang for a lavatory/toilet - hence my amusement at her expression!. The farmhouse is still there, but it's had a modern bathroom, kitchen etc. for some time now. It's tempting to feel romantic about the healthy out-door life our forebears had - but it was hard work hauling buckets of water from the spring at the far end of the field. And I NEVER enjoyed visiting the privy at the end of the garden - even if I was only an occasional visitor to the farm.
