    3. I am following the exchanges between you all with a mixtureof apprehension and amusement but mainly awe! Do you all know one another PERSONALLY or is this wonderful communication merely through the ether? It sounds to a new (ish) member as if you are all cousins in a large, loving family - which is, I suppose, what you are. Now, can you bear with someone quite ignorant, as yet, with some of the facts about our Palatines? I am trying to read what I can when I can but rarely has a subject been covered so well with literature that I'm not sure I will ever say I know 'all about the Palatines' (sorry Terry) Can anyone tell me what happened to those who decided not to head for Ireland please? Was the fear of persecution justified? Please bear with my ignorance, if I don't ask, I never will know. Did anyone on the list have any family member left behind and is there any evidence of what happened to them? Many thanks Hazel

    3. Hazel and List, I don't know who might have been left behind, but there are lists of those who made it as far as England or Ireland, didn't like what they found, and returned to Germany. Curiously, my husband's ancestors (surname Opgenorth) might have been among them. His aunt had written down their place of origin as "Falsdorf". We searched in the genealogy library at Salt Lake City and came up dry. Then our son who'd had a bit of High School German said, "Maybe it was spelled Pfalzdorf". Sure enough, there was such a town on the German/Dutch border and documents on record naming his great grandparents and other Opgenorths. A couple of years ago our son traveled to Germany and visited Pfalzdorf (translation - Palatine Town.) In the middle of the village stands a monument with a timeline entitled "Pfalzer Chronik" The first date is Mai 1741. Though I don't understand German, I can make out "Pfalzer emigranten", "Pennsylvanien", "Amerika", and a phrase that seems to indicate the War of Spanish Succession. It mentions Emigranten Adam Beeker und Michel Grossart. If anyone on the lists is fluent in German, I'd be happy to transcribe and send the text of this monument and perhaps we can add a chapter to the Palatine story......Karen Opgenorth

    1. Re:[IP] with apologies
    2. Dear Hazel That's just what it's like..you've hit the nail on the head. When I read your message, I almost wept with the sheer humility of it all. I think most of us are on an upward learning curve on this particular List. Without wishing to gush - I think it's the best thing that's happened to me for years (perhaps ever). Let me tell you that when I first hit upon the group, by accident, in May (I suppose), I knew straight away that it had answers I couldn't find elsewhere. I panicked so much I bombarded Admin with e-mails until I knew I hadn't lost contact for ever. A bit childish, perhaps, in retrospect. But it mattered. I remember your name from those early days for me (were you the nice lady who had land in Kerry?) - I don't know. Just can't remember. At that time I offered support and was bombarded with mail for many days. I loved it, but found it hard to keep pace... The good thing about the IRL-Palatine List is that it is precisely what Ken described it as - an open forum: a warm, inviting cluster of buddies you might say - all intent on finding the missing link(s). But it's much more than that - it's a kind of hearth to gather around when you choose. Not a committee that meets every third Wednesday in the year and which re-elects itself and ponders its navel for the rest of the time. This List is vibrant, friendly and it's there 24 hours a day - if you want it. Nobody minds if you go away to sulk, or do some knitting for a change. You can talk nonsense and they will ignore you sensibly until you've quietened down. It's full of quietly clever people united by what they see as a common fibre: their genealogical structure. Excuse me if I babble. I think most of my friends here know that Terry can't say anything in brief. It's an oration or nothing for me. But you can always skip paragraphs. When anything really matters in my messages, I always say: ***START HERE*** and I haven't said it yet. I'm into name tracking at the moment, with a vengeance. If you think you have Palatine links, let me look up your family from scratch (like 1709). Even if you don't, or you're not sure - it doesn't matter. (I've stopped consulting the LDS oracle now, by the way). You can be sure there's someone here who can point you in the right direction. If you think you do have connections with European settlers, it's an extra blessing. But just talking to these guys is, well, serendipitous. (God bless the Admin. dept). What names interest you, Hazel? ***END HERE*** Terry

    3. Now let's not get too carried away. Even the Olympics is not yet being organised beyond 2008 ! Sure, the Irish Palatine Association is not yet committed to organise anything in 2009, but at least some of the committee have discussed it. The big challenge with any such venture is to find willing and competent people who can commit to spare hundreds of hours. The IPA does a great job with limited people and financial resources, but with its present team would struggle to mount such a big exercise. However, they have a lot of experience and contacts. Perhaps some representatives from the IPA and this List could start to bounce around ideas, either within a committee or in the kind of open forum that this List offers. I have expressed a willingness to be involved in the organisation of such a project (if I'm still around - and the odds are that I should be, for I will then be only 62). I have some experience at organising modest international gatherings for the Teskeys (with a lot of help from my wife Janice), so I hope I'm somewhere along the route towards competence. However, our biggest event, a 5 day gathering in Rathkeale worked only because of the fantastic support from the IPA folk who live there. I'm also hoping to practice with a 2004 IPA trip to the Pfalz. My own thoughts for 2009 are to relive the journey of our ancestors, starting in the Pfalz, down the Rhine to Rotterdam, across the North Sea to London, up to Chester and over the Irish sea to Dublin, and then on to Rathkeale. If we were to try to include North America, everything soon gets very dispersed, but I guess we could get as far as the St Lawrence. We need to keep bouncing ideas around and get a feel for the level of support for different options, as well as seeking the cooperation of willing and competent project managers and travel agents. Keep the ideas flowing. Ken McDonald 2 Greenfields, Stansted, Essex, CM24 8AH, England [email protected]

    1. Re:[IP] 2009
    2. Nice one, Ken. I don't think anyone's being carried away. The sheer communal pleasure at the prospect of a reunion of this type is bound to generate some excited anticipation. It's tremendous to reflect on the way this group has built up so solidly under Susan's tutelage since (I think) April 2000. Much valuable information has been interchanged between correspondents and it is a daily joy to read the latest batch of messages. Even during a lull, there is a confident assurance that someone is out there thinking along the same lines. I am already 62. On 13 June 2009, I shall be as excited as ever. I said the options are running out. That is, of course, a joak. I, mean options in terms of birthday preferences. Getting to 20 is GREAT, whilst 21 is a bonus. The fearful age is 30. For many men, that's baldness and a paunch, at least. In my case it was the reverse: I had to grow a beard to give my head space for the hair to continue bushing out. It still grows. Forty was OK. Just that. Fifty was a turning point - sixty was a milestone. 70 has to be the big one and I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate my beingness. I look on my fellow listers as the Palatine Liberation Front - finally making headway where for years we have met absolute firewalls of ignorance. (What Pallingtines?) To be fair - although I thank God for its existence - the IPA has not even acknowledged my existence as a member - apart from one journal and a forthcoming event flyer (for 1999). I have seen nothing about a big Reunion. On numerous occasions I have openly offered my services - much more time is available after 60. I have had no response. Within the bounds of my limited skills and competence, I AM WILLING TO TACKLE ANY TASK THAT MIGHT BE OFFERED. I will lick envelopes, type and file, transcribe and research. I will walk miles to help anyone. I am here for the asking. I am not an organizer; but, in the true Rhinesider tradition, I am a dedicated worker - like my ancestors, a committed servant. Use me, man. ..... Well, I don't know where that all came from, but I needed to get it off my chest. Sorry if I've trodden on toes (I might even need your advice when I go to Limerick in early September). As excited as ever. (Just "bouncing off ideas"). Terry

    3. Hi Walter I thought you had dropped off the end of the world we hadn't heard from you for so long. My initial suggestion of a North American venue was based on the idea that it would attract a greater number of participants due to travel costs/time, etc and the Chicago area would have been ideal. (Central US, near to Canada, good airports, et al). The list might still change their mind and this could become the venue!! And who have we got on the ground to do all the work? Walter - it would probably be easier than building that boat and you would probably get your picture on the front page of the local paper! What do you think, list, of Walter's offer to organise the event in Illinois?? 3. Hi List Well that suggestion woke everybody up, didn't it. And thanks to Susan for her offer to chair the committee. What's going on, Terry? 13 June is my daughter, Helen's, birthday and 11 June is mine! June is a great idea, probably the best month of the year in the British Isles. And Burgomeister? My IP ancestor Johan Adam was the second son of the Burgomeister of Fellbach. I need to lie down!! Ireland is a brilliant suggestion and one thing Ireland is not short of is for somewhere to stay. If everyone agrees on Ireland and the County Limerick area we ought to rope the IP Association in on it and Ken's offer to assist is grand. A little surprising, however, as I spoke to a committee member at the Association a few weeks ago who told me that there were no plans to mark the 300 year event. I hope that the Association would not feel that any initiative that this list takes would not be "treading on their toes" especially if it were in their back yard. Certainly, if we are planning to do something it ought to be in conjunction with the IPA. I am a member and although not on the committee would be happy to represent the IP list, under the direction of it's members, at any preliminary joint discussions that we all might consider useful. What do you think, Ken and chairman Susan? The IPA is a very worthwhile organisation and I recommend anyone on the List to join. They have done more than anyone to raise the level of awareness in the area of our IP heritage do a lot of useful and interesting things but, unless you are a member, you don't find out about them. In the meantime, why doesn't everyone on the list start now to prepare a list of names and addresses of everyone (living) on their databases in preparation of an initial "mailshot" to all known descendants. It could also form the basis of sponsorship/discount requests to bodies such as the Irish Tourist Board, Aer Lingus etc. Note to the treasurer: Please send me $5000 dollars to fund a fact finding mission. I'll return the change.......honest!! Chris _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

    3. The Irish Palatine Association, based in Rathkeale, has a website at www.erin.ie/ipa As a committee member, I am responsible for getting it updated. I apologise that it is not yet all it should be - we rely on the generosity of a professional internet company who have been too busy recently. However, I hope it may prove of interest. The Association tries to provide a focus for IP families, and operates a museum in Rathkeale. Having organised group tours in the past to Ireland and the Palatinate, we are intending to organise a return to the Pfalz in 2004 and perhaps a bigger event to celebrate the 300th anniversary. I have volunteered to lead the organisation of the 2004 event. Willing volunteers and ideas for 2009 are always welcome. Ken McDonald 2 Greenfields, Stansted, Essex, CM24 8AH, England [email protected] Do check out www.teskey.org My mission is: o To record the history of all people, past and present, with the name Teskey or who are descended from a Teskey family. o To share this history with all living members of those families, and to make the history available for future generations. o To encourage contact between members of the Teskey families.

    2. Hey Walt 'Fore ye go - here's a quick one, just to remind us what the ol' list's about. Been doing some name tracking recently, after Kent pointed me to the missing lists. Hank Jones, I seem to recall, was not always able to patch up links between the Rotterdam and London musters and one of the gaps concerned our Fitzelle/Phyzle group. He found Fisel in the Dutch lists, but couldn't trace the sociological data we're given for St Catherine's on this particular man. I'm pretty sure it must be WEITZELL, John (Hs & V., age 29, sons 11/2-3 mos., L). I wonder if that helps? I believe I've also singled out a number of other 'missing links' (including LEGEAR in London - but that's such a nutty theory of mine, I'd have to think carefully before explaining my reasons). The hunt goes on, but it's truly fascinating - it's held up the Groves Transcripts horribly. But I just love this wild beavering in the genealogical backwater from time to time. Y'all coming to the party, too? Be good to meet you. We'll both be of an age... Terry

    3. IPs, I agree w/ Carole, Liz and Chris! How wonderful, to have a 300th-year anniversary reunion of the Irish Palatines! To participate in this event, we will be leaving Chicago (via wood boat as our ancestors left the Palatinate). Via Great Lakes & St. Lawrence Seaway to the Great Pond to who knows where on the Erin Isle. Whoever said the FISSELs were that smart? 2. Hi good friends It seems great fun to think of Chris as our Venerable Burgomeister (I hope he wouldn't object to that compliment). Also I can imagine Liz as Treasurer and Carole as Ents. Arranger - with perhaps Susan as Lady Chair. Looking back at the sailing dates of the Rhinelanders in 1709, I calculate that the mid-point between the first passage (12 May) and the last (24 July) falls comfortably around a very significant birthday for me - 13 June 2009. What a great giggle. May I put my name forward as a candidate for the Steering Committee? Terry PS All fufure birthdays seem significant to me, somehow. The options are running out. Couldn't we bring the Moot forward (like 7 years - to celebrate the accession of Queen Anne...?)

    3. Dear List I regret to find that a number of the members on this list are not taking seriously reports of my ancestor's efforts to improve the lot of chickens with sore heads. I happen to know that he spent a great deal of time and effort in researching the causes of this precarious malady and in finding a cure. I do know that nowadays that this condition is uncommon and would suggest that he may well have been instrumental in its eradication from chicken ranches everywhere. The name of Doctor LeGear, I understand, is often spoken of in hushed tones whenever serious chicken fanciers meet. As to how you can tell if chickens have sore heads or not the answer is obvious. You compare them to the ones that don't have sore heads. Unfortunately, the people looking after Columbia (about 170 miles NE of SF) frown upon people stealing from the exhibitions and although I tried to get a picture it didn't come out because the item was behind glass. However, I do have a picture from the internet that I retrieved some while ago of another Doctor LeGear product, "Corrective Poultice for Pigs with Crossed Eyes" which I understand was another major seller. The tablecloth was well received and the bride and groom were "knocked out" with the story. As was everyone else. I spent much of the week repeating the story to people who had heard of it. I found California to be a fabulous place, quite unlike anything I had imagined. I have travelled extensively around the world in my few short years but can honestly say that the people I met in the US were the most outgoing, friendly and welcoming I have ever met. The one thing that stood out for me in particular was their pride in their country and state and their willingness to show it. It has given me the itch to visit more of the country and am already planning to go back again, for a longer period. For those on the list who are not American, and have not been to the US yet, I can not recommend a visit to such a fabulous country highly enough. As another after thought, it would appear the the vast majority of the descendants of the 1709 immigrant IPs are these days living in the US and Canada. I know it's 8 years away yet but in 2009 it will be 300 years from their arrival in Ireland and would it not be an idea to consider a 300 year reunion somewhere in North America? And more importantly, is there anyone on the list that would consider taking on the Herculean task of organising it? (What about sponsors, exhibitors, etc!!) When you start to think about the task and it's vast potential (historical and commercial) 8 years is not all that far away. 3. Dear Treasurer (and treasured! <g>) Liz, <<An Irish Palatine web site anywhere? I know there are a few dedicated to specific names, but I was wondering if there was one through rootsweb.>> Up until a month ago we had GenConnect boards in place for IP data: Wills, Deeds, Pensions, Biographies, and Bible records. Unfortunately they didn't seem to catch on, cuz no one posted data to any of them. Since that time, however, Ancestry.com (which owns Roots Web) changed the entire system and eliminated the old GenConnect boards. There are new message boards instead, and you can post/share any and all pertinent data on on the new boards. There is a single board per topic/list now in lieu of the previous five separate ones per list/topic. During the change-over from the old GenConnect to the new Message Boards, the IP boards were somehow lost between the cracks and a new Message Board for IP data was not re-established. Since there had been little if any prior activity, I didn't bother to push the issue. We seemed to be doing pretty well sharing data via the list, (Wow, what a great group of folks!) and all that previously posted data can be found by searching the threaded archives. That being said, however, (whew!), if there were sufficient interest in having an IP message board set up, then perhaps the request could be broached to the powers-that-be at Ancestry.com/Roots Web. Y'all would have to REALLY want one for me to go to bat for this... <lol> Also, didn't somebody come forward months ago and volunteer to add all of our IP data to his web site? C'mon, fess up, who was it??? ...or has my memory completely failed now? <g> (Careful how y'all answer that!) Susan, Your trusty list admin. in the sweltering AZ desert...
