    3. Yes, Ken. I belong. (I'm feeling a little guilty actually, they've helped me - and for quite a while I've been meaning to try to write something short for the Newsletter/Journal. I really must contact privately you to see what the editor might want.) (The historian Farrar > observed in his History of Limerick (1780) that the Palatines 'sleep between > two beds' - I think he was trying to tell us something.) > You will be waiting some time for that flight, we were fog bound this morning, and with the town population of 250 you will need something to land on the local cricket pitch. BUT that is now the centre for the football till summer time. Onto "two beds" Without dropping quite to the depths of Terry, (he's too deep for me, I get lost LOL) Another old family saying was that waving ones pants over ones partner would get them pregnant. I now think that may have come from the Palatines!! (vbg) I think I will delete the next few messages from Terry unread, I tremble to think what will come up next. The Corneille site was very informative, it will take me a month to go through it all, so thankyou for that one Terry. Cheers Jacqui Way down under.

    2. Hi Odds and ends here [#S: These are random documents from the 1712-1719 period that you should be able to slot into sequence without difficulty. Since I have them, I have typed them. Comments would be superfluous, I think. Spelling mistakes and typos are as in the original - trust me.] ***START HERE*** Petition after July 1713 of Leicester & Palatines No B. That there are several poor Palatines now in prison on unreasonable Leases, who have been there above a year in a most deplorable condition, and others have come near 100 miles to Dublin for relief, and redress of grievances, by deputation from the rest, of whom some have been here now above 6 months in Dublin, and waited so long till they have been sent to prison for diet and lodging, and remain there at this time without relief, having made repeated applications and are not yet redressed, Though the express words of the Patent enjoin the said Commissioners, to prevent their being imposed upon by reason of their ignorance, But seldom anything but the aforesaid Commissioners meeting together, Nothing appears yet to be done for their relief from the said thraldom and grievances. MAY IT THEREFORE PLEASE your Excellencies and Lordship to take the premises (promises?) into your tender consideration, and to grant such relief to your petitioners and such of the injured Palatines complaining, as to your great wisdom and Justice shall seem meet. 3. Just to let you know that 'some Switzers' cannot be found in Limerick. My children's gggg grandfather Tobias SWITZER 1783/5/7-1867 who married Elizabeth ???? & had 7 children in Ireland and I can't find a trace of them. This SWITZER family came to Ontario in 1825 with Peter Robinson settlers. Did other Palatine families come with Peter Robinson settlers in 1823 & 1825? His emigration papers say he was from Adare. Does anyone know if there are records in Ireland about Peter Robinson settlers? This is my brick wall...... Plus every record that I do find gives him a different birth date. He is buried in St. John's cemetery in Brock twp. Ontario, but lived in Emily twp., Victoria County, Ontario most of his life. His sons were called Christopher, John, Tobias & Amos and daughters Jane, Theresa, Elizabeth & Ann.....so some of them must be family names. I love the chatter on this list [but hard to keep caught up at times...LOL] Terry...did you ever get my parcel????? Canada Post is slow!!!! 2. Robert Rose
    3. Hello Pals, I've been lying low for about a year now but have watched with interest as this list community has become even more vibrant after a strong start the previous spring. I only wish other lists had administrators like Susan to keep things simmering! I am a descendant of Anne SWITZER who married James CUNNINGHAM about 1800 in Adare. They and their large family were part of the Peter Robinson immigration to Canada in 1825 and were settled in Ops Township near Peterborough in Ontario. That much I know for sure. An Internet correspondent wrote me that Anne was the daughter of Adam SWITZER and Barbara DOLMAGE and was born in the early 1780's in Adare. I am looking for documentary evidence on that particular SWITZER-DOLMAGE family apart from anything B. Wesley Switzer or Hank Jones may have written. Is anyone else on the list descended from that particular couple, and have you been able to discover any original documentation which mentions the children in the family? If I can definitively connect 'my' Anne Switzer with this particular family it seems that the genealogical connections are quite clear for the previous century. Robert Rose Toronto

    1. [IP] The IPA
    2. Hi, good friends A sober assessment of the relationship between the Irish Palatine Association, (Rathkeale) and the Irish Palatine List (hosted by rootsweb.com) follows, based on the views of one contributor/subscriber to that List. To begin with, I think perhaps we are expecting too much of the IPA. I regard it as an authority, first and foremost: a reference point, an efficient organizing body and a hugely beneficial focus for all things Palatine to all descendants of the dispossessed German community of 1709ers. That's us. The Association (I believe) boasts more than 7 000 members worldwide. It was founded and its day-to-day business is conducted chiefly, I am told, by one very dedicated man. I have never met the Chairman, Austin Bovenizer, but on the occasions when I have spoken with him by 'phone, I have found him to be a very gentle-mannered, courteous, obliging and informative man. I hope he will forgive me for talking about him when he is in no real position to know what I am saying, or to answer back. But I do intend to speak about this when we meet in the very near future - and, more to the point I shall offer my services if they might be needed. In the meantime, I do feel the need to come to his defence if criticism is directed at him (or the Association he represents) in our busy little corner, however muted. I suspect I might be to blame to some degree and I regret that. But, quite simply, I know of several members like me who feel bereft to some degree because our only contact with something we want to be more involved with is an annual journal (excellent, but usually late) and an out-of-date Newsheet. My point here is that our List fills that gap to some significant degree. The List poses no threat, it is dynamic and - I've made the point often - it's there on the doormat all day, every day. It's warm, friendly and it's here - now. Like the Association, it doesn't focus solely on the residual Irish Palatines in Limerick, Wexford, Tipperary and Kerry, etc., it reaches out to the far more widespread family of emigrés, extending to North America, Australasia and beyond. And there's the fun of it. We can see that in everyone's wonderful messages. But the Association takes care of many more matters. It preserves, maintains and constantly builds upon a base of original Palatine documents, artefacts, homesteads and suchlike. It arranges conferences, seminars and tours/excursions, etc. The range of activities is truly vast and while there are many helpers on the ground, the sense of responsibility must surely be immense. More to the point (although no-one mentions it, or seems to consider it), the Association achieves all this on a sorely limited budget. To be honest, how many of us know of a similar organization anywhere in the world that demands such a meagre fee for membership dues? Barely the cost of a parcel and a couple of postage stamps, if you think about it. Yet I have never heard of any request for more. Credit where it's due, I think (in more than one way). I am saying all this (verbose as ever), but I felt the need to weigh in before anything calamitous threatened. We need the Association and we need the List. I see no conflict there - but I understand too the need to be able to talk to the IPA, yet there is no medium. Perhaps I was wrong to say anything at all, but I did feel provoked a little by (occasional but constant) suggestions that I should join when I was already a member. In truth, my activities here on the List are my affair - sorry, OUR affair. Kick me off, if you wish. I'll go quietly (anyway, I'm nearing the coast of southern Australia now - in my dreams). Tell me where I went wrong. If I did. Bye bye Terry

    3. Ken. I'm a member of The Irish Palatine Association and on the IP mailing List. Berta Callender, a cousin, made me aware of the Association some time ago. I endorse her recommendation to join the Association. 3. Terry, Oh, that would be "marvelous!", as my cousin in NZ always says! Both of us would appreciate anything that you can "dig" or "unearth" on the surname of TWISS! What do you want? Fax #? Or, SNAIL MAIL? Where are you, by the way? I live in British Columbia, Canada. Thank you so very much. Shannah ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, August 19, 2001 6:10 AM Subject: Re: [IP] TWISS family Shannah Following up your query about Bansha: I found the townland in Kerry through Ed Finn's wonderful site at http://www.seanruad.com/cgi-bin/iresch This database will patch together all the townlands, civil parishes, baronies and Poor Law Unions (PLU) in Ireland. You can get a print-out of any number of 60 000+ townlands with the associated details. Yours reads as follows (assuming it's the right one - I'm sure it is): Townland: BANSHAGH Acres: 310 Civil Parish: Killorglin Barony: Trughhanacmy PLU: Killarney and, obviously, County Kerry in the Province of Munster. If you have land there I'm very envious. Here is a delicious snippet about the Palatines in Kerry, taken from the GROVES TRANSCRIPTS which I shall continue to post at intervals soon. The sheer genius of these German immigrants calls for some serious reflection - remember we are dealing with bogland here: ***START HERE*** From J King's History of Co Kerry p.146 Palatines at Arabella in Ballymacelligott parish: Col. Hassett brought a colony of Palatines from Co Limerick about 1746 and settled them near Tralee. About 1776 there were 16 families small farmers. Each settler in 1746 got a cow a horse and everything they wanted for a year, besides having the land for half its value. They introduced ploughing with a wheel plough and planted their potatoes in drills. They brought in cars with wheels as there were only sliding cars before…. ***END HERE*** I think our Jamboree in 2009 should begin with a journey in wooden buckets (along the route suggested by Ken - from start to finish) and we should drift between townlands on sliding cars. What a hoot ... I will do name searches for anyone, not just Hazel, of course. As regards TWISS, I can't tell you much more than Hank Jones does in "The Palatine Families of Ireland". Like the author, I can't find the name in the important London lists - although I have tracked down many others that are missing from the book. If you don't have that information, by the way, I can send it to you off-link. Bye bye, Shannah Terry ==== IRL-PALATINE Mailing List ==== List Administrator: Susan Laursen Willig [email protected]
