    3. Thank you Diane...Ann Harney had also suggested the Applotments and I will begin looking there next week. Keep your fingers crossed as it would be great to find the parents that I need. The Famine almost certainly played a role in his emigrating, and it's unlikely your Owen was all alone. If his parents had died, he may have been with an aunt, uncle, or cousin. I am trying to find my Kelly ancestors who came from Monaghan.....Where I have no idea. My great grandfather Owen Kelly, born in 1842 and ten years later in 1852 to left Ireland to come to Boston. He arrived here in the Boston area in August of 1852. I have found a few Owen Kelly's on the ships lists and am not positive which one is him. I have never found any other Kelly's with him. I would think that if a 10 year old was to sail alone, he would have someone to keep an eye on him. I have his citizenship papers and it just says the he was born in Monaghan, Ireland. I lose him after he arrives and cannot find him so far living with anyone. About 1860-62 he signs up for the Civil War and enlists two or three times over the next few years. About 1866 he marries a Joanna Harrington and they move to Stoneham Ma where they lived and had three children. William, Mary and John Philip. John is my grandfather. His death certificate says that his father was also an Owen Kelly and that his wife was Mary. Great help right!! No one in our family knows much about the old Kelly family other than he may have had a sister Catherine who married a Michael Welch. I still haven't looked into their records and the only things I knew was that Catherine went to live with my grandfather after her husband Michael died. If I can locate their records it may tell me something...hopefully! I cannot recall my aunt Mary or my grandfather talking about the family in Ireland and I know my father didn't know much either. I do have a question for the group! Did young children leave Ireland alone and head to the US?? I am also wondering if his parents may have been affected by the famine if they died would there be any records in Ireland listing those that died? I know I am looking for a needle in a hay stack, but have learned that clue can come from the craziest places...and that is what I am hoping! I also realize that Kelly is a very common name and can be spelled Kelley. I have checked both spellings. In my own mind I wonder if Owen and Mary died during the famine and someone took pity on Owen Jr and put him on a boat to America! Makes sense to me. Hope someone on here will have additional places I can check to find out where Owen came from. Thanks a million....
