Hello Christina, My gt gt grandfather Joseph Smyth b1827 left the army in 1871 ( after the census!) and it says he went back to Kilmore, Co.Monaghan. His (2nd) wife Catherine nee Condon and children Joseph b 1866, Elizabeth b 1869 and Thomas b 1871. Is there an idex, on line, that I could look for his death? Ideally the 1881 census would have been great!!! Any advice would be gratefully received. There is no complete census before 1901. I do recall seeing that some on the Indices on the LDS are incomplete. I do know of two deaths one in 1901 and one in 1903 which are definitely NOT in the LDS listings. The chances are you will find what you are after, but if not don't assume it did not happen. If you can't find it on the LDS list you may have to get someone to check the Official Index at the local Registrars. Your major problem is the lack of detail on Irish death certificates. You may find several Joseph Smyths and unless you know which townland he died in you may not know which is yours. If you are VERY lucky one of his relatives may have been the informant and that will be recorded. If the informant was neighbour or doctor it will not have any useful genealogical data. The stated age on the certificate may be a guess and be well out. I have a death certificate where the neighbour was the informant, and the stated age was 66. When this gentleman was buried his age in the church records was 84. I did an LDS check for Joseph Smyth dying Monaghan 1871 - 1901 and came back with 1589 hits.
